Tip#1249: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 55 – Cruella

This is Day 439 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

I recently ordered a highly recommended fried panzerotto and when it arrived at the checkout window of Frank’s Pizza House it was so enormous that it couldn’t even fit in the box! I actually had to adore the beauty of it for a few minutes before savoring each delicious bite. It felt like a gift from the universe because a week later I ordered the same panzerotto and it wasn’t as big as that first one. It felt like a meaningful message.

On the morning of a recent low mood day, I was at the checkout of a No Frills supermarket when the cashier asked if I wanted a free bag of potatoes. So I said yes and felt a feel-good energy flow through me! Later, after needing to sleep the whole afternoon, I pushed myself outside for a walk and went by a yard with items being given away. There I found a giant Star Wars mug with the statement, “KEEP CALM AND USE THE FORCE”.

The enormous panzerotto, the potatoes and giant mug all felt like important gifts and messages from the universe. First, it was a reminder that I DESERVE and I’M WORTHY of the bigger things in life. Secondly it was a reminder to THINK BIG and DREAM BIG with my life and career goals instead of focusing on the negatives of my life restrictions of the current pandemic.

Thankfully I later watched a just released movie that brought all these messages together in an epic, thrilling fashion!

Cruella (2021)

The comedy drama film, Cruella, is based on the character Cruella de Vil from Walt Disney's 1961 animated film, The Hundred and One Dalmatians. This prequel story is set in 1970s London, during the punk rock movement, and features Estella/Cruella (Emma Stone). She is an aspiring fashion designer, on a path to discovering her true identity and seeks revenge on famous fashion designer, Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). The cast also includes Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

The sizzling visuals in this movie were so stunning and electrifying and were brimming with rich colours and textures on the screen. Estella/Cruella was also inspiring for her resilience, perseverance and relentless tenacity for following her passion and goals for her talents. There are also many memorable, creative and flashy costumes and wild make-up that I immediately knew I had to watch those scenes again and again!

And for any entrepreneur, there are fantastic marketing lessons in the film on how to make a memorable impression of a new product. One idea was simply to be as big, bold and audacious as possible and that will instantly generate a huge emotional impact on the audience.

Thinking positive is one way to lift one’s self up from difficult, low mood days. But then thinking positively BIG could be a path that takes one’s mood even higher! Be open today for signs from the universe reminding you of your inner bigness. And find a film today that will help re-energize your worthiness to remind you that you DESERVE the bigger things in life!

Tip#1248: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 54 – Oxygen

This is Day 432 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

The sunny, warmer days of spring are here and they are definitely helping lift my spirits since we have entered another two weeks of stay-at-home orders for this long pandemic. Thankfully I continue to do regular walks in nearby woods for Forest Bathing/Therapy, exercise and vitamin D sunshine. And I continue to eat delicious and nutritious foods that you can see more on my Instagram channel: My Recipe for Resilience

Growing my Instagram followers of fellow foodies around the world has been helping me stay focused on being productive. All these new social media relationships from around the world (and their delicious photos) help feed my spirit (pun intended) on a daily basis! My dream is to somehow evolve this into a profession as a Social Media Influencer but not sure how yet. I just want to be of greater service during this pandemic and beyond!

This uncertainty led me to a film I didn’t want to see because the trailer seemed like a big mirror for the isolation I was experiencing. But then a little voice inside me said to watch it for a message that would help feed my resilience. And I’m so glad I listened to that voice!

Oxygen (2021)

The French-language science fiction thriller film, Oxygen (French: Oxygène), is about a woman (Mélanie Laurent) waking up in a cryogenic chamber with no memory of how she got there and she must find a way out before running out of air. This gripping story is also a mystery film packed with unexpected surprises.

This film is definitely about isolation and loneliness with important life lessons in perseverance and resilience in how to deal with a dire and seemingly hopeless situation. I could identify with the heroine’s anguish and yet the cinematic message I received touched my soul deeply, gave me comfort and provided me a simple reminder to keep moving forward with hope and confidence.

Without giving away any spoilers I will present this cinematic wisdom I received in the following two screen shots. I highly recommend seeing this film if what I’ve written resonates with you.

Isolation is a major challenge for many people in today’s global pandemic. All we have to do is choose to persevere and embrace the the belief that there are answers to our questions of how to keep moving forward. Movies are one of the many tools you can use to discover your answers. Find a film today for some exciting cinematic wisdom meant just for you!

Tip#1247: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 53 – WarGames

This is Day 424 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

Cinematic comfort food is the perfect way to describe how specific movies are helping boost my low mood days during this pandemic era. Films have always helped ease my anxiety and clinical/seasonal depression over many decades and yet more so during these uncertain times. Movies can be extremely comforting!

The escapism of favourite films always amazes me with its potent power of providing me hope and new perspectives on life. Recently I’ve been feeling a little lost despite the wonderful sunny spring weather and regular walks to nearby woods for some forest bathing I mentioned in tip#1246. And strangely, I’ve been unable to finish watching new movies I haven’t seen before.

But thankfully I would feel the urge to watch a film straight through that I may not have seen in decades that I've always enjoyed. I found them to still be entertaining so many years later. One recent film title grabbed my attention and instantly transported me to happier times of my youth in the 80’s. It made all my troubles disappear for two wonderful hours!

WarGames (1983)

The thriller film, WarGames, is about high school student David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) unwittingly accessing a classified war games program that initiates a nuclear war threat between the United States and Soviet Union during the cold war. This highly entertaining movie also features memorable performances by Ally Sheedy, Dabney Coleman, Barry Corbin and John Wood who also voices Joshua/WOPR.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

I loved seeing this film again with it’s many memorable scenes like hearing Joshua's electronic voice saying, “Shall we play a game?”. David also shows how smart and resourceful he was throughout the story that I always found cool like breaking out of a locked room or using a payphone without paying. It was also funny to see the old home computers of the early 80’s. And yet the visuals in the war room during the finale are still breathtaking and thrilling to see. It was all a comforting feeling revisiting this movie!

In the end the powerful message the film leaves the viewer is still powerful. It’s a reminder that sometimes better not to get into a destructive fight and that the best move to make is not play at all. I highly recommend you see this fun, entertaining film!

There are certain films that can cheer you up and provide guaranteed relief from the troubles of your day. These are favourites you grew up loving and may have forgotten about. Seek out one of these films today because it might be the perfect cinematic comfort food you’ve been craving to lift you up!

Tip#1246: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 52 – Avatar 2009 – Forest Bathing

This is Day 417 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

I have discovered a new passion and ritual for what’s called Forest Bathing! It’s also known as Forest Therapy and Shinrin-yoku since this practice was founded in Japan. It’s a form of self-care for removing stress and depression and an effective way to disconnect from too much technology. It has become a very welcome addition to my methods of dealing with the long isolation of the current pandemic lock down.

I am also so grateful I discovered nearby woods for Forest Bathing. Once I arrive I always immediately feel the calming affects of the trees. The sound of birds singing is so soothing and the sound of wind through the trees transports my whole body and mood into another world.

Here are links I highly recommend you check out for some quick overviews of the health benefits of Forest Bathing:

• What is Japanese forest bathing and how can it improve your health – 1 min.
• Use Forest Bathing for Immune Boosting – 4 min.
About Phytoncides (wood essential oils) that boost immune system & stress relief

While in the woods I’ve intuitively put my hands on the trees as if I was plugging myself into our planet knowing that it’s roots are connected to other trees creating a vast underground network. This was a concept I was inspired by when I saw the film Avatar. That film definitely planted a seed (pun intended) of the magical power of trees and forests and how vital it is to create a loving relationship with them.

Avatar (2009)

The science fiction film, Avatar, is about a battle for the natural resources on the planet Pandora between visiting humans and the native tribe known as the Na’vi led by the human/avatar Jake Sully, a disabled former Marine (Sam Worthington). This epic and visually stunning movie also stars Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.
See: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

I believe this is one of the most visually immersive CGI world ever created on film. The detail in the alien forests, creatures and alien race is truly breathtaking! I am so happy I got to see this more than once in 3D on the big screen making it one of the most amazing cinematic experiences ever!

The messages for maintaining the natural forests and trees is delivered loud and clear in this film. It also mirrors how vital it is to understand and accept that our well-being is dependent on embracing and caring for the beauty, balance and energy of nature, animals and especially our forests. Through Jake’s eyes we see this beauty and then witness his attitude transform from a non-believer into a true leader who fights to keep this new world alive at all costs. Highly recommended you see this film!

If you are feeling stressed, depressed, isolated or overwhelmed by technology then your prescription is to spend around 15 minutes or more in the tranquil energy of a forest. Find a balance of time with work and time being out in nature with your cell phone turned off. Get rejuvenated and re-energized in nature today!
