Tip#1202: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 8 – Paris Can Wait

This is Day 105 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

Every day this week I’ve been enjoying more YouTube research on pasture-raised eggs and their wonderful farmers in Canada, USA and Europe. I was also so happy to discover the term for the amazing, natural coloured eggs I love which are called Heritage eggs. Looking at them just bring me joy! And, like all pasture-raised eggs, they have deep yellow/orange yolks and are top of the line when it comes to being nutrient dense and delicious.

• Heritage eggs at: Murray's Farm, Ontario, Canada
• Heritage eggs at: Carol's Eggs, New Hampshire, USA

I also continued to research raw, unpasteurized cheeses from France and it led me to an amazing video clip of gourmet lunches children eat at their schools in France. I was so stunned to learn that their one-hour for lunch is treated like a class with a four-course meal that included a cheese course and dessert. And all served to them on porcelain plates with silverware and glass cups.

These children learn from a very young age:
• What a balanced diet is
• To pay attention to what they eat
• How to eat in a civilized manner
• To enjoy healthy food
• How to serve others

These are key life lessons we could all benefit from in order to really care about what we put in our bodies that greatly affect our physical and mental health. This clip is from Michael Moore’s film, Where To Invade Next and you can see it here: School Lunch France - Michael Moore

This eye-opening clip further excited me to learn more about the French culture and passion for eating! This led me to re-watching a film that was filled with delicious, uplifting insights from France!

Paris Can Wait (2017)

The comedy, drama film, Paris Can Wait, is about Anne (Diane Lane) unexpectedly taking a car trip from Cannes to Paris with her husband's (Alec Baldwin) business associate, Jacques (Arnaud Viard). There are so many wonderful scenes of delicious meals and lush landscapes to enjoy on this adventurous road trip from Cannes to Paris, France.

Jacques’s passion for life and food represented the joy and core values of being French. And as he teaches Anne how to eat and live life more guilt-free I felt he was also teaching me important life lessons while being presented with mouth-watering scenes of French cheeses, fresh strawberries, fine dining, wines and sensuous amounts of chocolate! I also appreciated that Anne loved to take photos and document the delicious discoveries she was having.

This life-changing road trip awakens Anne’s passion for living and it mirrored my own awakening to my current journey of eating more delicious and nutritious foods! Films like this help amplify my desire to pay more attention to what I eat because I actually feel better with these new diet choices and I know it will enable me to live as long as possible with the healthiest mind and body I can achieve!

Choosing to live a more vibrant, exciting life can start with simple changes of healthier choices of eating raw cheese or pasture-raised eggs from happy chickens. It’s about truly caring for the foods going into your body and how it will empower you physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s about really loving yourself! What life-changing choices will you make today?

Tip#1201: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 7 – Julie & Julia

This is Day 98 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

The hot sunshine and warm energy of summer is here and it’s reflecting my luminous passion to continue researching my nutrient-dense diet (aka Ancestral Eating/Health). Since the start of this quarantine I have been dedicated to daily eating of homemade grass-fed beef bone broth, pasture-raised eggs, grass-fed butter, raw sauerkraut, authentic sourdough bread and Norwegian cod liver oil. This week I dove into learning more about the delicious world of raw cheeses!

Thanks to Global Cheese Shoppe and Alex Farm Cheese Store here in Toronto I was introduced to a variety of raw, unpasteurized cheeses from France and Switzerland. This led me to finding fun and informative videos on YouTube that further educated me on understanding why so many people love raw, unpasteurized French cheeses!

Here are 3 videos:

5 Health Benefits of Raw Cheese:
• Considered a complete food high in vitamins A, D3, K2
• Helps calcium go to your bones and teeth
• Keeps blood sugars stable (no crankiness or the “hangries”!)
• More probiotics than yogurt (healthy bacteria and digestive enzymes)
• Raw milk for cheese comes from pastured animals and overall tastes better!

Listen to this great interview:

Of course, all these French cheese experiences made me think of the movie Julie & Julia and I re-discovered what a fantastic foodie film it was. But make sure you have some food ready before you start watching it!

Julie & Julia (2009)

The comedy drama film, Julie & Julia, is based on the true stories of chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) in the early years of her culinary career and on the life of New York Blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams), aspiring to cook all 524 recipes in Child's French cookbook in 365 days. This highly entertaining film is also a popular foodie film filled with delicious scenes of food and cooking. There are wondeful performances by Streep, Adams and Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina who play their husbands.

First, every foodie must see this delightful film! Every scene that features the joy of food, cooking and eating was so exhilarating to watch. Secondly, both stories highlight inspiring examples of resilience, perseverance and indestructible optimism for following each woman’s dreams and goals. Thirdly, Julie and Julia’s passion for French cooking was a strong message and reminder that there is something deeper to understand about the French and their joyful relationship with food. And when it comes to raw cheeses, the French believe in its superior taste and health benefits over pasteurized cheeses.

I’ve loved this film ever since I first saw it in the theatre and now, over a ten years later, it further inspires my new passion for eating raw cheeses daily for medicinal and enjoyable purposes. Julie’s passion for learning French cooking definitely mirrored my own and it fueled my inner drive to maintain my mental health by indulging in delicious, nutrition foods!

The food or movies we love can help re-ignite our inner strengths to persevere with the challenges of daily life or work. They can be amazing, easy-to-use tools for inspiring our passion and drive to be resilient even in the darkest of times. Find a favourite film or a delicious food now to empower yourself today!

Tip#1200: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 6 – Splash

This is Day 91 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada.

In the news this has been another week of intense and emotional time around the world with massive numbers of people marching for Black Lives Matters. Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, was also in hot water because of her anti-transgender comments on Twitter. Racist experiences were also captured on many videos that went viral on Twitter leading to arrests and also individuals losing their jobs or endorsements of their businesses.

And the stresses of dealing with quarantine life and an uncertain economy continues. Despite all this, I’ve been doing my best to stay focused on the positives like the warmer, sunnier weather and my new recipe for resilience that includes the delicious, nutrient-dense diet I’ve been documenting on this blog and on Instagram.

Unfortunately this weekend was my second vacation trip cancelled due to this pandemic. I was suppose to return to the heavenly Butter Tart Festival in Midland, Ontario. So to lift myself up I made my own butter tarts and they turned out good! I was so excited shopping for the ingredients yesterday that the process itself really helped to keep me positive in a time when I could easily have slipped into a mild depression.

My very first batch of butter tarts!

That’s why I am so grateful to actor Josh Gad who, during this quarantine, has been doing super enjoyable and highly nostalgic videos on YouTube/Zoom featuring cast reunions of beloved movies. So far he’s done The Goonies, Back To The Future, The Lord of The Rings and Splash. It was such a warm feeling seeing these actors and filmmakers come together and I was inspired to watch one of these films I hadn’t seen in decades. Splash was a fantastic feel-good film from my youth and wanted to see how it held up years later.

Splash (1984)

The romantic comedy film, Splash, is about Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks) who falls in love with a mysterious woman and secretly a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) who rescued him from drowning as a child. This wonderful, heartwarming movie features many memorable scenes and hilarious performances by the leads as well as the legendary John Candy and Eugene Levy.

Watching this film after so many decades immediately touched my heart and sent super feel-good vibes throughout my body! The chemistry between Hanks and Hannah was fun to watch and her performance as Madison was so adorable, funny and moving at times. Madison eating a lobster and receiving a gift from Allen are classic scenes I still loved. And seeing the late John Candy again was so soul warming to see.

During Josh Gad’s cast reunion, they shared many fun behind-the-scenes stories that included Candy’s scene of being hit on the head with a racquet ball being done in just one take! I knew I was getting re-energized by this romcom and it was just another reminder of how uplifting favourite films from the past can be for feeling more positive and resilient.

The daily news of emotional events around the world during this pandemic can be draining sometimes and lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. Just remember that the magic of cinema can help transport you to a magical, uplifting place for an hour or two. Take time today to watch a favourite film that you haven’t seen in awhile and get ready to rejuvenate your positivity and optimism again!

Tip#1199: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 5 – COVID-19 – Runaway Bride

This is Day 84 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada

This week I passionately researched online to learning the egg differences of Caged vs Free Run vs Free Range vs Pasture-Raised! I even generated some helpful discussions on Facebook about these differences. It felt really good to connect with other people who are also caring about what they eat. For me this quarantine has been a profound time to learning more about self-care in really delicious ways!

What I discovered is that I resonated with pasture-raised eggs because I loved the vision of happy chickens living and eating in the sunlight on fresh air and healthy green grass. The results include more orange yolks, higher vitamin A, B12, E, D, K2, omega 3 fatty acids and more that goes into our bodies! And since vitamin D is key for people dealing with seasonal/winter depression, like me, having these eggs would be very beneficial. More…

“They also found that eggs from hens raised outdoors on pasture have from three to six times more vitamin D than eggs from hens raised in confinement. Pastured hens are exposed to direct sunlight, which their bodies convert to vitamin D and then pass on to their eggs. Eating just two of these eggs will give you from 63-126% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D! Note that this benefit comes only from hens that are free to graze fresh greens, eat bugs, and bask in the sun. 99% of the eggs sold in the supermarket do not meet this criterion.”
From an excellent eggs study: Read more

“Conventionally laid eggs come from hens that live in cages, called battery cages, which are about the size of a magazine. Several hens can be kept in these battery cages, making it difficult for them to move or spread their wings ever during their lifetime. This causes the hens extreme stress.”
From another great article: Pastured vs. Free Range vs. Free Run vs. Cage Free - Guide to Eggs

One of my favourite videos I found on YouTube was a collection of 39 movie and TV scenes that featured eggs. This is where I discovered a wonderful scene from Runaway Bride featuring Julia Robert’s character learning about who she is as a person through how she likes to eat her eggs. So I was inspired to watch this film for the first time!

See video: 39 Egg-cellent Scenes in Film and Television

Runaway Bride (1999)

The romantic comedy film, Runaway Bride, is about New York columnist Homer Eisenhower Graham or "Ike" (Richard Gere) assigned to write a story about a woman, Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) who run and leave a string of fiancés at the altar. This entertaining, fun story features the wonderful chemistry of the lead actors as well as the charming small town community of Hale, Maryland.

Even though I was eager to find that egg scene with Julia Roberts I ended up whisked away from life in quarantine with an unusual story I had no idea what was going to happen next. I ended up wanting to know the psychological reasons why a woman would run from her own wedding three times!

What unfolded was a study of how Ike and Maggie each were not in touch with who they really were which resulted in their chronic, disfunctional issues in life. And when the egg scene finally arrives these main characters demonstrated their courage to make positive changes in their lives thanks to the brutal honesty they thrust onto each other.

Movies can trigger happy emotions and memories whenever favourite foods like eggs appear on the screen! A film can also be a powerful mirror for helping us see where we can make positive changes in our own lives. They can be important reminders that our resilience can be fueled by the loving support of people around us. Find a film today to re-ignite your drive to find your true self and inner strengths!
