Tip#1095: Remember Your Indestructible Optimism, Part 6 - Solo: A Star Wars Story in 4DX

I just had a fantastic, blissful week and it’s because I’ve been putting extra attention to practicing the Law of Attraction! I attended two very special events that each had difficult challenges and roadblocks to get through. Thankfully I was able to focus on the positives instead of the negatives to get there.

For one of the events my friend David Pedro and his wife Tricia were hosting a special fundraiser in memory of their daughter called Star Wars for Zoe. It included a special pre-opening day screening of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 4DX. 4DX is a special sensory theatre with moving seats and environmental effects to match the images in the film such as smoke for explosions, mists of water, jets of air and thumps to the back of your seat.

I already heard pros and cons about 4DX that were not appealing and the only seats available were in the front row. And with this being a 3D screening I knew this was going to be hard on my eyes and not going to be an enjoyable cinematic experience. But as the event got closer I refocused my thoughts and feelings. Instead of focusing on my needs I focused on just attending this event totally in honor for Zoe. That wonderful change of attitude freed me from the anxiety I’d been feeling.

So finally when I was in the 4DX theatre, I was sitting there in the front row focused on enjoying meeting the new people I sat with, being close to friends seated elsewhere and seeing David and Tricia give a heartfelt presentation about Zoe. And thankfully there were 15 minutes worth of ads and trailers because it took that long for my eyes to adjust to the painful brightness and being so close to the screen. In the end the Law of Attraction helped me enjoy this special event and was an amazing test for maintaining my indestructible optimism!

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

The space western film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, is about the adventures of a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) prior to the events of the movie Star Wars: A New Hope, Episode 4. The story shows how Han met Chewbacca and found his iconic spaceship, the Millennium Falcon. Also starring is Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. See: movie trailer

This film has been getting mixed reviews and I had a lot of pros and cons about it. So it’s best you see it for yourself and see what you think. One of the cons was, from the first announcement of the actor playing Han I didn’t feel he was right for such an iconic character. I felt Ansel Elgort from Baby Driver would have been perfect (see tip#1052). As for the pros, I loved the unexpected twists that happened and an amazing fight scene with Qi’ra.

My 4DX Theatre Experience

As for the 4DX theatre experience I again had pros and cons. The pros included my seat moving and tilting fluidly with spaceships that were flying on screen. Thrilling stuff! The cons included watching the fights where someone gets struck in the back (or falls on their back) and feeling like someone just kicked the back of your chair. Not fun! So some sensory effects enhanced the movie but others took me out of it.

In the end I was so happy and grateful I could be with close friends, share a unique cinematic experience and celebrate a special memorial for my friend’s daughter. And this wouldn’t have happened if I allowed a pessimistic mindset to rule my decisions. My indestructible optimism shined brightly and led me out of my ruminating of negative thinking.

So always remember that developing indestructible optimism takes daily practice to maintain a strong, focused and positive mindset. Studying the Law of Attraction and NLP (neural linguistic programming) are two fantastic tools to explore.

You can start right now and look out your window and if it’s sunny out then smile and drink in the sunlight and warmth. And if it’s dark and cloudy then know in your heart that the sun is still there radiating its soothing rays of sunshine to re-ignite your optimism!

Tip#1094: Movies to Inspire Hope & Ignite Change, Part 3 - Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance

I am so happy I got to watch the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live on YouTube! I was able to witness two cultures coming together in a beautiful, lavish ceremony blessed with a bright sunny day at Windsor Castle, Windsor in the UK.

Along with the stunning visuals of the bride, the Prince, the attendees and the historical St George's Chapel, I was moved by the combined musical performances of classical music and the modern performed by black representatives. This felt groundbreaking for this royal community with the choir singing “Stand by Me” and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing three classical songs. My heart was just bursting!

I later heard on the live Global News telecast one of the hosts, Cheryl Hickey, raving about the Lifetime TV movie, Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance. And since I was intrigued by the story behind this royal couple I immediately watched it. Wow, now it’s my turn to rave about it!

Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance (2018)

The romantic drama TV movie, Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance, chronicles the courtship and love story between Prince Harry (Murray Fraser) and actress Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley). This entertaining film features some great performances by amazing look-alike actors as well as a fascinating look at the process of integrating into a royal family. See: movie trailer

“This is going to change the way people see the world.”
Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance (2018) TV Movie

Since I live in Toronto I felt extra close to this love story because it’s an important location for the couple. Meghan worked here on the TV show Suits while she was dating Prince Harry. The movie also explores the challenges of Meghan being biracial and divorced as well as Prince Harry’s pain of losing his mother Princess Diana at such a young age. The film also travels to beautiful sceneries of Botswana Africa where Prince Harry does his charity work and they fell in love.

-- SPOILER ALERT! --

Don’t read anymore if you don’t want to spoil the TV movie’s ending for a revelation that stunned me! On the other hand this news may be reported more widely in future news anyways. I’m just glad I discovered it in a cinematic way!

So here it is: Near the end of the film, Queen Elizabeth is showing the couple a painting of Queen Sophia Charlotte from the late 18th-century that clearly showed biracial facial features. Both Meghan and Prince Harry were stunned (as was I!) to learn that Meghan is not the first black royal. Queen Elizabeth then says “Oh yes, you’re of mixed race Harry, so am I.”

This revelation puts into full perspective of what I was feeling of how the royal wedding was celebrating more than just love and the union of this couple. It was a global celebration of different races and cultures coming together in pure joy. It was a celebration of our differences and for living in a world of heart-felt compassion and acceptance of one another. This is the world I want to live in!

Be inspired by real-life stories and people that help change our world for the better. Be inspired by movies that tell stories of courage and love for one another despite the differences that threaten to separate us. Right now is the perfect time to celebrate all of these uplifting, empowering people and stories!

Tip#1093: What Does Family Mean to You? Part 9 - Grandma

Today is Mother’s Day and I’m sending out my love to my awesome mom and also her mother who recently turned 100 years old! And though I wish I could be with them both I am so happy my mom is able to celebrate with my grandmother where she lives in sunny Santa Barbara.

The most recent time I saw my grandma (Lola) was at Christmas 2013 and she looked really good and healthy. I am thrilled and in awe that she continues to live a rich, full life! And yet, as in all families, there are ups and downs within relationships among the generations that followed my grandma.

And despite whatever adversities we all face in our families I believe there is always a silver lining. There is always a chance to heal fractured relationships with love and the strength to let go of past pain. These are powerful themes that can be reflected brightly in the movies we see!

Grandma (2015)

The comedy drama film, Grandma, is about an abrasive, strong-willed, widowed poet named Elle (Lily Tomlin) who takes her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) on an adventure across Los Angeles in search of the cash she needs to terminate her unwanted pregnancy. All the performances are wonderful in this emotionally engaging story about supporting and understanding family. See: movie trailer

Seeing this hidden gem reminded me of experiencing the Toronto International Film Festival for the first time because of the unexpected power of a simple story told in a low budget movie. Their adventure on the road is actually an unexpected ride to the heart of what family is all about. Tomlin is absolutely outstanding and funny in her role. Her interactions with everyone she encounters is both heartwarming and delightfully uncomfortable especially with her granddaughter Sage and her estranged daughter Judy (Marcia Gay Harden).

Compassion and forgiveness ultimately shine through as inspirational reasons to see this film. The love between mother, grandmother and daughter prevails despite the acidic feelings in their long term relationships. This film can give you a hopeful vision that any family can heal.

If you have a family with challenging relationships and hurtful memories that seem impossible to heal remember there is always hope. No matter what, do your best to envision healing, compassion, forgiveness and unconditional love to flow into your relationships. And if you need a boost remember to watch an uplifting film about family to help you believe!

Tip#1092: How To Feel Good When You Feel Horrible, Part 3 - Game Night

I recently put closure on a situation that caused much anxiety and stress for over three months. This heavy weight in my thoughts required daily guided audio meditations to calm me down. And yet on the evening of the day I finally faced my fears head on I was able to laugh while talking to a supportive friend over the telephone. It was an amazing, pivotal moment full of lightness, relief and unexpected joy!

I don’t remember having been able to laugh like that in the past few months but I do remember days I was able to park the anxiety for awhile and allow myself to focus on work and life and just feel good. I was able to increase my positive emotional energy thanks to my joy of cooking and delicious foods, hot showers, long walks outdoors, being with friends and, of course, the pure fun of watching movies!

Game Night (2018)

The black comedy film, Game Night, is about Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) and their friends for weekly game night that find themselves caught in a real-life mystery game. This hilarious movie has many funny performances mixed with big action scenes and a slew of classic game and movie references! See: movie trailer
There is a long action scene that is one continuous shot involving a Fabergé egg that is so exciting once you realize it is one shot. This exemplifies how clever I found this comedy especially with so many references to games I grew up with and fun movie references the friends discuss. And some of the characters do and say stupid things that made me laugh out loud!

And that mirrored the anxious, ruminating thoughts I recently experienced that had disappeared once I was able to finally laugh about my situation. The movie reminded me that no matter how dark that cloud was over my head that feel-good times, relief and laughter will always return.

So anytime you are feeling some long-term stress and anxiety remind yourself of the power of laughter. Remind yourself of feel-good activities and loving, social support that can lift you up and provide you with hope and lightness. And always remind yourself of how comedy films can pump up your positive emotional energy and make you smile a really big smile!
