Tip#1198: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 4 – COVID-19 – This Is the End

This is Day 77 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada

This week the news has been filled with a multitude of demonstrations and destruction across US cities and also in other cities around the world. Seeing these shocking images and videos on social media made me so grateful for living in Toronto. What eased my distressed mind was watching favourite comedy films and focusing on my new diet of superfoods I’ve been documenting on this blog and my social media: Instagram

As mentioned in previous posts (Tip#1196 and #1197), I am following the nutrient-dense diet from the amazing 1930’s studies by Dr. Weston Price and carried on today by Sally Fallon Morell. I highly recommend you check out their amazing work:

Overview: Timeless Principles of Healthy Traditional Diets
Nourishing Traditional Diets Lecture by Sally Fallon - 120min. video

If I were to recommend three immediate diet changes anyone can do right now it would be these superfoods:

• Cod Liver Oil from Norway (2 tsp daily): Learn more
• Sauerkraut (raw & unpasteurized) (1 or more tbsp daily): Learn more
• Grass Fed Beef Bone Broth (1 cup daily): Learn more

There are so many exciting health benefits to each of these three nutrient-dense foods that I highly recommend you check out the links to see how you can improve your physical and mental health. Make these foods part of your daily diet and then they’ll become part of your recipe for resilience! And part of my recipe for resilience was also watching favourite comedies that always make me laugh out loud, especially if they are rude and crude! And a recent film I saw also happens to be about coping with quarantine.

This Is the End (2013)

The apocalyptic comedy horror film, is about fictionalized versions of its cast dealing with a global biblical apocalypse in Hollywood. This entertaining movie is filled with hilarious, rude and crude performances by Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson. There are also many cameos of star playing version of themselves such as Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Paul Rudd and Channing Tatum.

Movie fans of any of these cast members will enjoy all the self-references and jokes about their other films making this a very meta/self-conscious film! I loved seeing all the surprise cameos and how the story mirrored the current mid 2020’s quarantine of real-life and even the homemade videos of celebrities on social media. It was fun seeing these six characters strategize their food rations and cope with self-isolation by making personal documenting videos and even a homemade sequel to one of their own films, Pineapple Express!

And despite the hilarious audacity of R-rated jokes there are moments for life lessons to shine through about friendship, living selfishly verses selflessly and thinking of others first. Heart-based moments with rude/crude humour have become a trademark of Seth Rogen’s produced films and a bonus for films that can bring a lighter mood in dark times.

Times of unexpected crisis can teach each of us to create our own recipe for resilience that can include a healthier diet and motivating movies that can re-energize and re-vitalize our spirit and drive. Take small steps each day to make positive changes in your life whether it’s just one new nutritional food or watching a film to transform your low moods. These are the gifts to yourself that will fuel your perseverance and indestructible optimism!

Tip#1197: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 3 – COVID-19 – The Biggest Little Farm

This is Day 70 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada

Wonderful warmer sunshine arrived this week! It was a reflection to how good I’ve been feeling while I continued to add more nutrient-dense foods to my diet. Along with daily forkfuls of raw, unpasteurized sauerkraut, two teaspoons of cod liver oil from Norway and grass-fed butter on authentically fermented sourdough bread I made my first batch of grass-fed beef bone broth since doing it a few years ago!

I simmered the bone broth for 24 hours and my whole home smelled fantastic! And it turned out beautifully gelatinous which is from the collagen extracted from the bones. This contains the nutrients in helping re-mineralize teeth and bones, heal a leaky gut, reduce joint pain, reduce inflammation, prevent bone loss, and build healthy skin, hair, and nails. See more and my recipe on: My Instagram

As mentioned in previous post (Tip#1196, Part 2), I am following the nutrient-dense diet from the amazing 1930’s studies by Dr. Weston Price and carried on today by Sally Fallon Morell. I highly recommend you check out their invaluable work:

• Overview: Timeless Principles of Healthy Traditional Diets
• Video: Nourishing Traditional Diets Lecture by Sally Fallon - 120min.

Nutrient-Dense Foods I have daily:
(with recommended portions)
• Cod Liver Oil from Norway (2 tsps)
• Sourdough bread with authentic wild yeast recipe (1 slice toasted)
• Free-run eggs (1 daily)
• Grass-fed butter (1/2 tbs)
• Organ meats: chicken liver, cod liver, foi gras (once a week)
• Cheese (raw & unpasteurized) (small slice)
• Sauerkraut (raw & unpasteurized) (2 to 3 tbs)
• Honey (raw & unpasteurized)(1/4 tsp)
• Grass Fed Beef Bone Broth (1 cup)

This exciting new lifestyle and diet change inspired me to finally watch a film on my long “To Watch” list that celebrates farm fresh foods and, as I discovered, so much more that included lessons on resilience, perseverance and indestructible optimism!

The Biggest Little Farm (2018)

The documentary, The Biggest Little Farm, is about a young couple, John and Molly, who leave their old city lives behind and experience the highs and lows of rebuilding and running a 200 acres farm. This visually beautiful story is brimming with gorgeous landscapes and whimsical relationships of humans with farm animals and with other animals and nature itself.
Watch: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

There is so much to love about this documentary! John, Molly and their team demonstrate how plants, wildlife, livestock and humans can work together in a profound harmony despite several years of constant adversities. One example is how they deal with snail infestations ruining their fruit orchards. They discover that their ducks love eating snails so they simply let them loose in the orchard to remove the multitude of snails!

There is also a powerful message of re-vitalizing and rejuvenating the dead soil of the farmland they purchased. It emphasized what I’ve been learning about the nutrients in the soil that farm animals graze on eventually gets passed onto humans that consume their meats and dairy products. It is exciting to see all these life lessons unfold in this story of a couple that finally found a lifestyle they love and are sharing their wisdom through this film. Highly recommended!

Some films can be entertaining and also delivery important life lessons that can potentially change your life for the better. Some of them can also provide cinematic role models of resilience, perseverance and indestructible optimism to inspire you through difficult times and unexpected crisis. Find a film today to re-vitalize your inner strengths and drive!

Tip#1196: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 2 – COVID-19 - The Hundred-Foot Journey

This is Day 63 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada

I’ve had a delicious, life changing week with the discovery of a diet that I am so excited about! First I must say that, at first, I was feeling a bit down because recently I was suppose to be at the Vermont Restaurant Week. Of course this event was cancelled weeks ago and the Canada/US border was closed but I’d been yearning to return because the farm fresh foods had affected me so deeply. It was like my body telling me I needed more of these life-affirming foods!

My discovery this week had to do with an amazing 1930’s studies by dentist Dr. Weston A. Price of 11 isolated groups of people, tribes and cultures from 14 countries around the world. He found they all had near perfect teeth with almost no cavities and were resilient to the diseases of the time like tuberculosis. He learned that despite their varied diets they were able to extract specific vitamins and minerals from their nutrient-dense foods that led to their astounding physical and mental health for young and old.

List of Physically Isolated Groups of People (primitive races & cultures):
1. Remote villages in Switzerland
2. Gaelic communities, Outer Hebrides
3. Eskimos
4. North America Indians/Indigenous (USA & Canada)
5. Melanesians, South Sea Islanders
6. Polynesian, South Sea Islanders
7. African tribes
8. Australian Aborigines
9. Torres Strait Islanders
10. New Zealand Maori
11. Peruvian Indians

Dr. Price published his findings in a book called Nutrition and Physical Degeneration and while I read several essays online about it I discovered a fantastic lecture on YouTube by Sally Fallon Morell who carried on Dr. Price’s research in her book, Nourishing Traditions. Her two-hour lecture fired up my imagination and passion and I began making a list of nutrient-dense foods to start eating and also to share with my mom. I'll also share more details over time on this blog and with my online communities on social media. Join me: Instagram

Here are 3 links I highly recommend:

Excellent Overview: Timeless Principles of Healthy Traditional Diets

Nutrient-Dense Foods I've added to my diet so far:
• Cod Liver Oil from Norway
• Sourdough bread with authentic wild yeast recipe
• Free-run eggs (not Free-range yet)
• Grass-fed butter
• Cheese (raw, unpasteurized)
• Organ meats: chicken liver, cod liver, goose liver
• Sauerkraut (raw, unpasteurized)

My mornings now start with a toasted slice of authentic sourdough bread, grass fed butter with 2 teaspoons of cod liver oil. Deeelicious and nutritious!

These farm fresh foods reminded me of the many foodie scenes from the film The Hundred-Foot Journey where the characters were finding foods in the forest and shopping at a farmer’s market in a French village. So I re-watched this wonderful movie for further motivation in following this exciting new nutritional lifestyle!

The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)

The romantic comedy drama film, The Hundred-Foot Journey, is about a battle between two restaurants in a southern France village: an East Indian family business and a French Michelin-starred restaurant. This highly entertaining movie is overflowing with delicious food scenes, beautiful, country vistas and wonderful performances by the enire cast that includes Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon.
Watch: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

Every foodie needs to see this film and it is also on my Top 12 Movies for Foodies list! There are so many scenes that lovingly photograph the passion of cooking for both East Indian and French cuisines. It also explores the importance of country fresh foods that are discussed by the lead characters.

The story also celebrates the resilience of the Kadam family fleeing their restaurant in Mumbai and facing further adversities when they rebuild a new restaurant in a village in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val. You also see the passion, determination, courage, confidence, perseverance and indestructible optimism of the second-oldest son, Hassan Haji (Manish Dayal) to become a Michelin star chef. Despite his many challenges, Hassan eventually discovers his own recipe for resilience with the help of the supportive people and family around him.

So what is your recipe for resilience? Whatever the ingredients are make sure you are nourishing your mind and body with delicious, nutritious foods. And to feed your positivity, make sure you watch your favourite films when you are feeling lost or alone. Finally, surround yourself with family and friends who love and support you. Film, food and friends = The coolest recipe for the soul!

Tip#1195: Be Resilient & Confident, Part 2 - The Riddick Movie Trilogy

This is Day 56 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada and it’s Mother’s Day.

This week I found myself highly focused and goal-oriented on re-balancing my diet by eating more live foods like fruits and vegetables. I’ve been overindulging in heavy comfort foods since quarantine started eight weeks ago and have been feeling sluggish along with other depression-like symptoms. But now I’m enjoying juicy red grapes, navel oranges and bananas plus lots of veggies like broccoli, spinach, zucchini, eggplant, orange peppers, peas, onions and garlic. I could feel my body smiling and thanking me!

All this actually started after my teeth began to feel sensitive over the past several weeks and I started researching how to re-mineralize my teeth and enamel. I was excited about YouTube video stories I found like this one by Kathleen Black.
Watch video: “How I Naturally Restored My Enamel and Remineralized My Teeth”

Something inside me seemed to re-activate and I felt empowered, confident and focused about getting the recommended mineral supplements and immediately went to my favourite health food stores (thankfully were open). I happen to be near a favourite supermarket where I felt compelled to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables.

The bonus is this newfound focus and drive can only result in helping me feel stronger in body, mind and spirit! This positive feeling also mirrored the movie hero of a trilogy I was drawn to re-watching this week. The hero inspired me with his incredible sense of inner and outer strength, resilience and an elevated, super calm confidence in himself!

Pitch Black (2000)

The science fiction, action horror film, Pitch Black, is about spaceship passengers stranded on a planet inhabited by nocturnal monsters and the only person they can rely on is a dangerous convict named Richard B Riddick (Vin Diesel). This riveting, race-against time story also stars Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Keith David.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

When I first saw this film I was immediately intrigued by how calmly confident Riddick was. Every time he opened his mouth he spoke with few words and was so direct to the point. He was also funny too! He was tenacious and was extremely fearless whenever he faced conflicts with fellow humans or the vicious alien monsters he had to battle.

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

The science fiction action film, The Chronicles of Riddick, follows the adventures of Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) who must face bounty hunters and Necromongers, an evil race systematically conquering planets. This epic adventure is filled with exciting visuals, costumes and sets and also stars Colm Feore, Thandie Newton, Judi Dench, Karl Urban and Alexa Davalos.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

This chapter is on such a grand, epic scale and yet that didn’t overshadow Riddick’s personality strengths of a confident, courageous anti-hero (or hero depending on how you look at him). This time he faces overwhelming armies and is seemingly trapped in inescapable planets. His incredible resilience and perseverance, once again, is explosive and thrilling to watch.

Riddick (2013)

The science fiction action film, Riddick, is about Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) injured and stranded on a sun-scorched planet and is fighting to survive and escape from, alien wolves, aquatic monsters and two sets of bounty hunter teams. This highly entertaining story also stars Matthew Nable, Jordi Mollà, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine and more.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

In this chapter, Riddick, is shown demonstrating even more extreme examples of resilience and demonstrates his ability to be resourceful and use strategic thinking to help himself escape a desolate planet. His confidence even amazes his enemies who later follow him as a leader during a life and death crisis.
