It's Christmas Day as I write this and I've been on my restful, annual Las Vegas vacation for a week now. It's been sunny every day since I arrived and I've been indulging in delicious foods constantly! 'Tis the season after all. One of my favourites was a classic, over the top Las Vegas Japanese buffet. There were massive stations for Sushi, Hot Foods, Soups, Salads and Desserts. I ate as many crispy, succulent shrimp tempura as I possibly could! Yum!
This is also a time when I get reflective about where I am in my life and career. In the past this holiday time amplified the anxiety of dreams and goals I haven't achieved yet. This year I am at peace with where I am. And I loved the synchronicity of catching Love Actually on the TV, one of my favourite holiday movies. A new motivational quote in the film caught my ear encouraging me towards an optimistic New Year! Here's the quote...
"You've seen the films, kiddo. It ain't over 'til it's over."
Love Actually 2003
The romantic comedy Love Actually explores different aspects of love through several separate stories as Christmas approaches. You see romantic love, the love between father and son, husband and wife, siblings, work colleagues and unrequited love. The stories interweave throughout as the wonderful soundtrack takes you through examples of relationships that may mirror your own.
The quote I mentioned is said by Daniel (Liam Neeson) to his son Sam (Thomas Sangster) when he feels he is too late to tell a girl he loves how he feels. I felt this quote was also meant for me for all my dreams and goals I've been trying to manifest. It not only addressed my passion for movies but also I felt it was a message from my own Dad who passed away in December 2000. Receiving this optimistic message would be one of the best Christmas gifts my Dad would have given me from heaven.
If you are watching movies at this holiday season I hope they are delivering heartwarming messages to you. I hope they are comforting you to be at peace with where you are in your life, career and relationships right now. And I hope they fill you with overflowing optimism for an exciting new year!
Merry Christmas wherever you are on this beautiful planet of ours!

Tip#507: See Life as an Epic Adventure - Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol
PICTURE THIS: In 6 days you are going on a sunny holiday vacation and suddenly you get some sort of cold virus that forces you to stay in bed. Do you choose to focus on not making your vacation date OR do you choose to see life as an epic adventure whatever is happening at the moment?
This happened to me this past week and I CHOSE to see life as an adventure especially in my mind as I lay in bed delirious with fever. I kept imagining how exciting my vacation would be AND took immediate actions on getting well, taking vitamins, supplements, lots of liquids and rest. And here I am! I am writing this blog post in sunny Las Vegas for the Christmas holidays!
What amazed me more is that the day before my flight Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol opened in IMAX cinemas and I was compelled to see it. I was still a little disoriented but trusted my gut and saw it at the Scotiabank IMAX theatre. I was blown away! It was an epic adventure! I was so entertained and taken away that my spirit was incredibly energized by all the action sequences AND the bigger than life IMAX format! It was like a reward for maintaining my positive mindset.
Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol 2011
The spy film Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol is the 4th installment with agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team of spies. As with all the previous movies this one is filled with even more amazing spy tech gear, exotic locations (Dubai, Mumbai) and elaborate action scenes. Seeing Hunt scale the world's highest tower in Dubai is a stunning segment and MUST be seen in IMAX. See: movie trailer
The bonus is that you will also see a thrilling and long preview of upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises. The scene you see was filmed in IMAX and so even before Ghost Protocol you will be taken to another world through the magic of cinema. After the film I had a big smile on my face because I already felt like I was on my sunny holiday vacation!
If you find yourself faced with unpleasant situations like a debilitating cold at times you really don't want it, do your best to maintain an optimistic mindset. Roll with the punches and focus on picturing yourself healthy and vibrant. Then take the necessary actions to move through your challenge with confidence. Whatever you imagine will eventually manifest so have faith and see life as an epic, exciting adventure and it will come to you in some amazing way!

Tip#506: Time Travel & Alternate Reality Movies – 4 Hidden Gems
I'm happy to say that my life and career has been stabilizing after 2 years of intense change (see tip#400). And it's because I've been learning to focus on my future AND writing out detailed plans of my dreams and goals. My success also comes from my friend and Money/Wealth Guru, Patrick Bizindavyi who has become my official business coach. He has been helping me stay productive AND stay focused, focused, focused!
What Patrick continually reminds me of is the same message that John Assaraf (The Answer book) and Ti Caine (from 2012 Conference) are saying and it has to do with focusing and creating our own realities. It's about not dwelling or focusing on what you don't want presently in front of you. It's about BELIEVING that the awesome future you want already exists. Your future self already exists that has accomplished all your goals!
I love time travel movies growing up and I believe this passion allowed my imagination to flourish which is a key to visualizing your future and your future self. These movies can help you imagine your own possibilities. There are many popular movies about time travel and alternate realities like the Back To The Future movies, Groundhog Day and The Time Traveler's Wife.
Here are 4 hidden gems I've discovered recently...
Mr. Nobody (2009)
This movie is about a man close to death who ponders the many lives he remembers living even though it is a mystery which are real or not. The stunning visual storytelling will take you into the past, present and future of Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto). He will share many fascinating life lessons about making choices in your life that can take you in very different directions. See: movie trailer
Primer (2004)
This independent movie is about 2 friends (Shane Carruth and David Sullivan) that accidentally discover a means of time travel. This film is like a documentary and so it feels like everything you witness is actually real. The time travel paradoxes that get introduced will keep you on your toes and you'll want to see it again to see how earlier scenes fit into revelations throughout the story. See: movie trailer
The Scientist (2010)
This movie is about a reclusive physicist (Bill Sage) who creates a mysterious machine in his basement that alters his life and sense of reality and those around him. His invention helps him move beyond his depression because of the new perceptions of life he discovers. These new, exciting possibilities of existence helps him see death in a whole new way. See: movie trailer
Café (2010)
This independent movie explores the relationships (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jamie Kennedy), and the community and regulars that come to a local café before a tragedy occurs. At first this appears to be a down-to-earth light hearted story but the concepts of alternate realities begin to unfold in a fun, playful way! This will get you to question existence in the same way The Matrix movie did. See: movie trailer
All these hidden gems will help you open your mind to new possibilities of your future. They can activate your imagination so you can start visualizing the future you dream about or desire. These movies will also get you to see the importance of FOCUS and the making of CHOICES. By making choices and then focusing on that choice you will open your door to your awesome future life!

Tip#505: Breathe New Life Into Your Past & Purpose - Hugo
I recently attended a Christmas party where a Latin American beauty told me she's been reading my movie blog! She said that when she feels low she goes to my blog to find a movie tip. Her comment touched my heart. It was the same feeling a got when I received another comment on my 500th tip (see at bottom here) from a woman in the UK who has been following my movie blog for 5 years. She said I've been her motivational boost. These wonderful acknowledgements help remind me that I've found my purpose in life helping others in difficult times through the magic of movies.
I also just completed an exciting project combining 2 passions that had been buried for years. I produced a new holiday video greeting that features colourful illustrations I had created many years ago. And it features a song I arranged, performed and recorded in the mid 90's of the coolest cover version of Winter Wonderland no one had heard before! I was able to breathe new life into my past and share them now with the whole wide world on YouTube and social media!
See video: New Winter Wonderland Song - Holiday Greeting!
Hugo 2011
The 3D movie Hugo is based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret about a boy who lives alone in a Paris train station. Directed by Martin Scorsese this magical film explores themes of fixing things and finding one's purpose. After his father's (Jude Law) untimely passing, Hugo (Asa Butterfield) focuses on fixing a broken robot to discover its purpose.
Hugo also ponders his purpose in life while a toy shop owner Georges (Ben Kingsley) struggles with the pain of his past that gets unearthed by the boy. They both need fixing and purpose and the film unfolds in surprising and emotional directions to accomplish this. They both end up breathing new life into their past with magical results.
Movies like this will remind you that it is never too late to fix broken memories of your past. And it is always a positive step to ponder your purpose in life. Finding your purpose in life helps you maintain your focus and enthusiasm in your work and life especially in difficult times. And remember, when you choose to breathe new life into your past or purpose there will always be someone there to help. It will be their purpose AND pleasure to help you!

Tip#504: Where There’s A Will There’s A Way OUT! - Happy Feet Two
I recently attended another life-changing 4 day intensive workshop called Canada's Public Speaking Academy where I got to improve my platform skills and speaker content. Facilitated by Barry Spilchuk, speaker and co-author of Cup of Chicken Soup for the Soup, he passed on his wisdom, techniques and experiences for us to excel as engaging, heartfelt speakers AND how to use our voices to help change the world.
The attendees included a diverse group of professionals and business owners who were all born in a different part of the world e.g. U.K., Ukraine, South Africa, Jamaica, etc. They each had such a unique style of speaking and had the gift for engaging an audience with passion. As we each took turns giving a speech in front of the group we all helped one another by giving advice and encouragement to be the best speaker possible. It was a mini United Nations of support!
Happy Feet Two 2011
The animated movie Happy Feet Two is a sequel continuing the adventures of an Emperor penguin named Mumble (Elijah Wood) and his dancing feet talents. This time he and his son Erik must find a way to save their entire clan trapped by a glacial disaster. The solution was to enlist the help of nearby species like the Adelie penguins, Elephant seals and even the humans they referred to as "aliens".
What unfolds is a magnificent movie filled with energetic songs, stunning visuals and a multitude of clever, motivational messages. One of my favourite lines was: "Where there is a will there's a way OUT!" It is moving to see how each of the species come and do everything they can to help the penguins in need. Ultimately this is a story that celebrates the power of community and how any massive disaster can be overcome through co-operation and the will to accomplish any goal.
See: movie trailer
Amazingly, the core message of Happy Feet Two mirrors the core message of the movie Thrive previously reviewed in tip#503. It's as if both movies are reminding audiences right now that the power of community is important in the solutions for current global challenges. Positive change can start with your own life challenges. Just find the will to remain positive and ask for help when you need it. We live in a world filled with amazing supportive souls in it! Someone will hear your voice!

Tip#503: Keep Your Mind Wide Open, Part 2 - Thrive
My favourite movie in my teens was Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Later in my 20's it was Contact starring Jodie Foster. Both excited me because I believed in the existence of alien life from other planets and these films helped fuel my imagination. They allowed my mind to stay open to the possibilities of amazing, mind-blowing concepts.
In my 30's I would become so enthralled in extraterrestrial life, crop circles, ancient prophecies and energy that I composed and performed all the songs and music on my debut album, Rain of Angels (see website). One of the songs called "2012" was about the Mayan Prophecies pointing to the "end of the world as we know it" in the year 2012. See my 2012 music video: Click here
I was utterly amazed when I recently saw a documentary featuring all of my interests and fascinations growing up and my music CD. This film may also be the most controversial film I have featured on my movie blog OR the most important. You decide...
Thrive 2011
The movie Thrive is an unconventional documentary that reveals what is really going on in our world on multiple levels. Foster Gamble, who co-wrote and hosts the film, presents 3 sections on what has been happening on planet earth and how we can improve our quality of life. The topics are: The Code, The Problem, The Solutions. Foster, along with interviews with Deepak Chopra and other experts in their fields, discuss ancient cultures, U.F.O.'s, crop circles, free energy, world economy and revealing explanations to our current financial challenges.
See movie trailer and clips: Click here
Get DVD or Blu-ray: Click here
The content of this film may challenge your beliefs and even shake the very core of everything you believe to be true. Foster already has a concise website (www.thrivemovement.com) that outlines sources for the facts presented in his movie. In the end I was very inspired by the Solutions segment where Foster presents an exciting vision of our future that revolves around building community. It centres around the key message that there IS enough resources on our planet for every single human being to thrive.
Dealing with unexpected changes in your life comes down to keeping an open mind about what you "think" you know. Amazing solutions may be right in front of you but may be invisible because of what you've been conditioned to believe. All you have to do is be flexible in how you've been viewing life and be open to new, mind-blowing concepts. These new ideas may be the solutions you've been looking for all along!

Tip#502: Inspiring Double Features - The Horse Whisperer - Buck
Over the past few weeks I have been meeting a number of warm-hearted life coaches. 3 of them attended a recent movie screening and discussion that I facilitate at the cozy St. Andrews United Church screening room here in Toronto (see tip#451). The movie we showed was Morning Glory and one of these coaches was very inspired. She later shared how The Horse Whisperer movie affected her deeply as well.
This was amazing synchronicity because I planned to see the new documentary Buck that is based on the real horse whisperer. So I immediately watched both movies as a double feature and was moved and inspired by the each of the movie heroes and their stories.
The Horse Whisperer 1998
The movie The Horse Whisperer is about a gifted horse trainer and healer named Tom Booker (Robert Redford). His services are pursued by Annie (Kristen Scott Thomas) to help her teenage daughter's injured horse after a traumatizing accident. Booker can see that her daughter (Scarlett Johansson) also needed emotional healing as well so agrees to the task.
Over the course of the story all four characters go through profound personal transformations. You also learn and recognize powerful lessons of how compassion and patience are needed for both the horse's rehabilitation AND for human beings suffering emotional pain and anguish.
Buck 2011
The documentary film Buck features the life, career and philosophy of the real-life "horse whisperer" Buck Brannaman. The movie explores Buck's childhood life with a physically abusive father and how it helped him forge a unique and gifted approach to handling difficult horses. Robert Redford is also interviewed and shares how inspired he was with Buck's warm personality and compassionate attitude. Redford incorporated Buck's spirit into his performance as Booker in The Horse Whisperer film.
Buck says, "Rather than help people with horse problems I'm helping horses with people problems." Buck believes that a horse’s behaviour mirrors their owners. So he teaches the owners to demonstrate compassion and patience with their horses with dramatic results. You will be amazed at the transformations.
The idea of the horse mirroring people is similar to my belief in the movie heroes we resonate. They can mirror our innate, inner strengths and potential. And if we seek to better ourselves in some way we just need to be open to the possibilities. Be open today with anything you feel is mirroring you in some way. It is reflecting something you need to see about yourself for positive change!

This was amazing synchronicity because I planned to see the new documentary Buck that is based on the real horse whisperer. So I immediately watched both movies as a double feature and was moved and inspired by the each of the movie heroes and their stories.

Tip#501: How Women in Movies Inspire a Leadership Mindset – 10 Movie Tips
If you've been reading my Movies that Motivate blog for past year you will know that I've been documenting the difficult times testing my positivity and resilience. I've survived financial crisis, bankruptcy, near homelessness and a blow to my self-esteem and self-worth. What helped me maintain my indestructible optimism were the supportive people around me AND incredible movies that motivated me to take charge of my life. Most of these movie heroes happened to be women.
The movie trailer for Eat Pray Love, for example, came out in March of 2010 just as I was losing my home of 15 years. I shuddered at the scene where Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) put all her belongings in a 10x10 foot storage locker after she lost her money and home. I ended up doing the same but in a 5x5 foot locker. When the film finally came to theatres in August I was temporarily living in a 100 sq ft. room in someone else's home. I had lost so much of my life.
The gift and silver lining in these dark experiences was knowing I was building a leadership mindset. I was learning not to take the victim attitude but a CEO attitude in my own life. Movie heroes like Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bollock) in The Blind Side, Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) in Freedom Writers and Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) in Secretariat all inspired me to maintain my POSITIVITY, PERSEVERANCE, PASSION and INDESTRUCTIBLE OPTIMISM.

Tip#500: How Passion Lives Forever - Anonymous
Today I am celebrating my 500th tip on this movie blog! I am celebrating 5 years of dedicated passion sharing movies that have entertained, motivated and moved me with readers around the world. And what I've discovered along the way was while I was writing my blog posts I was re-writing my mindset to be open and optimistic about myself and my journey.
Once again it was magical and synchronistic that I was drawn to seeing a movie called Anonymous reflecting the concept of re-writing what one knows. This controversial film has received both positive and negative reviews as it expresses the theory that what we know about William Shakespeare may not be the truth. For me I went to the screening with an open mind and allowed the story to be told. Thankfully, I was thoroughly entertained, motivated and moved.
Anonymous 2011
The movie Anonymous presents the fringe theory that questions Shakespeare's authorship of plays and poems known famously around the world. The film presents that these are actually the works of an Elizabethan aristocrat, Edward do Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (Rhys Igans). For political reasons he is not able to claim authorship and so manages to get his plays performed through stage actor named William Shakespeare (Rafe Spall) through the help of playwright Ben Jonson (Sebastian Armesto).
The visuals of a recreated Elizabethan London are stunning especially when you see aerial views of the cityscapes. The costumes as well are beautiful with rich detail. And if you put aside history and see this film as simply a story or a "what if" being told then you will see that this is really about the power and passion for writing. It shows that no matter who wrote the plays we know and love they have entertained and moved people over the centuries. See: movie trailer
Let Passion Flow
I felt for Edward who had a deep passion for writing. In the end he didn't care if the world knew he wrote his plays as long as they lived on beyond his death. I saw myself in his eyes when Edward secretly attended the performances of his plays and saw how audiences were thrilled and emotionally touched by his words. Seeing this movie reminded me to keep following my passion for films and the writing this blog.
In the end it doesn't matter who I am or the struggles I went through while writing this blog. It doesn't matter that I lost my home of 15 years, faced financial crisis, bankruptcy (see tip#400) AND faced G20 riot police (see tip#369). The only thing that matters is that by following my passion I am helping people around the world with this blog. Since I started writing 5 years ago I regularly receive thank you's and positive comments all reminding me that I am making a difference in people's lives. Within 6 months of starting this blog The Washington Post featured it as a recommended resource!
Thanks to the internet, this blog will forever be online and accessible to anyone on the planet. My tips will help lift someone up in their time of despair. And if you are reading this especially if it is 100 years from now AND are inspired to follow your passion or watch a film that motivates you then I have accomplished my job!
Thank you for reading this blog. Thank you especially if you've been following my adventures for 5 years. You are also on a great adventure and I hope I've helped accelerate you forward in some way. Let's enjoy the journey together for years to come!
NOTE: I will now be blogging once a week on Sundays in order to focus on new, exciting initiatives. Stay tuned!

Tip#499: Choose A Future - Mr. Nobody
I heard this quote at a conference this weekend and it struck me so deeply. I attended the 2012 Gateway To Your Future Conference here in Toronto and received so many answers to why I’ve been stuck spinning my wheels (see tip#481). One of the speakers was Hypnotherapist, Futurist, Healer and Life Coach Ti Caine and his message was that focusing on your future creates your present against the backdrop of the past. I was emotionally shaken to the core. My epiphany was that I needed to build a RELATIONSHIP with my future.
My financially successful career as an illustrator flowed easily and quickly without having any business plan. And I tried starting my motivational speaker career in early 2000's the same way and it hadn't worked. And even though I've tried to make 3, 5 or 10 year plans it was very difficult. I was excellent at accomplishing short term goals but long term was very foreign to me. Now I'm wondering whether or not I've been afraid to choose a future because I saw SO MANY exciting possibilities.
Mr. Nobody 2010
The science fiction drama Mr. Nobody is a rich, intricate story of the parallel lives of a man named Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto). Spanning different time zones of the 20th and 21st centuries. You see Nemo's 3 different marriages and what life is like if he chose to live with his mother or father when they separated. This movie explores the different realities that unfold when different choices are made in life. You see the benefits and consequences that result from the simplest choices or random occurrences. See: Movie trailer
Synchronistically, I watched this movie the day after the 2 day conference. It was EXACTLY what my spirit needed and it was a mirror for the meaningful coincidences that the film demonstrated. This movie and the conference helped me discover AND admit to myself that I purposefully did not choose a long term future to aim for. And it's not too late to make change. Since this epiphany I knew my primary focus right now is to build a relationship with my future. And, as Ti Caine suggests… I choose an AWESOME FUTURE!
This life really is a journey of discovery, mostly of oneself and the CONSCIOUS choices we make. Make a choice to understand who you are and what you want. Make a choice to have an awesome future for yourself!
"In life you get one take. If it’s bad you just deal with it."
Mr. Nobody (2010)

Tip#498: Catch Yourself - How Do You Know 2010
I'm coming up to posting my 500th tip on this movie blog and since I started in 2006 it's been a rich journey of self-discovery. As I admitted to myself and on this blog in tip#481, I realized I was caught "spinning my wheels" in my life and career goals. Thankfully I've confirmed important keys of breaking free. One of those keys is to keep building my self-awareness and catch myself when I THINK or BEHAVE in the ways that continually sabotage my dreams and goals.
This sounds easy and yet catching yourself takes practice and help from others because sabotaging thoughts, behaviors and habits are completely automatic and unconscious actions. When you do catch yourself they feel like exciting epiphanies, insights and AHA moments. That's when you know you've had a breakthrough for positive change.
How Do You Know 2010
The movie How Do You Know has 2 main themes that include a romantic comedy involving a love triangle and a drama about 2 people dealing with devastating life changes and challenges. Despite being the heart and soul of her team, softball player Lisa Jorgenson (Reese Witherspoon) is cut from the Team USA roster. Executive George Madison (Paul Rudd) suddenly finds himself targeted in a federal criminal investigation.
Along with the other man Lisa is seeing (Owen Wilson) these main characters are constantly catching themselves when they think or behave in a destructive way. They are able to stop and have an epiphany when they catch themselves! In one inspiring scene Lisa and George have their first dinner date together and Lisa realizes they are both having a really bad day. Instead of allowing either of themselves to vent about their problems she insists they stay utterly silent throughout dinner. At the end George's stress and anxiety had completely lifted and was extremely grateful for Lisa's insight to have a peaceful dinner together.
I watched this film twice in a row because I loved the characters, dialogue, romantic story AND I received many insights. I was also surprised to learn that this movie was considered a major box office bomb when it came out in theatres. Just goes to show that if you find a film that moves you in any way then you've found a golden nugget.
If you feel stuck spinning your wheels in your life, career or relationships do your best to catch yourself when you start the debilitating cycles. Assistance from others definitely helps so be open to people you trust. And when you do catch yourself the insights and epiphanies FEEL fantastic! I hope you experience an AHA moment today!
Inspiring quotes from How Do You Know:
"Never drink to feel better; only drink to feel even better."
"Figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it."
"You sure haven't let anything take away your spirit."
"I don’t know that I'll do great but I know I can do better."
"We are all just one small adjustment away from making our lives work."

Tip#497: Getting A Shot At Success – Live Lighter - Million Dollar Baby
I am very happy to announce that my good friend and health advisor Steph Miller has been nominated for a best blog award at Shape Magazine. She didn't even know her Live Lighter blog was nominated until the magazine contacted her! What is inspiring about this huge achievement is that it came at a time of an intense life change for her. She is also one of the close friends going through challenges I mentioned in tip#491.
Despite the emotional struggles and forced changes in her life, my friend has been given a magnificent reminder from the universe that her talents and gifts were being recognized. What a way to boost self-esteem during a difficult time! She's getting a shot at a new level of success. I invite you to vote for her blog and cheer her on! Go to: Shape Magazine
Million Dollar Baby 2004
The Oscar winning movie Million Dollar Baby is about amateur female boxer Margaret Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) who perseveres towards her dream of becoming a professional boxer. Despite her age, unsupportive family and a reluctant trainer (Clint Eastwood) she relentlessly pursues her desire. She becomes a powerhouse underdog with audiences cheering for her at every fight!
Margaret is a great example of having a leadership mindset with her incredible resilience, courage and indestructible optimism. And the message the film tells us in the end is that everyone deserves a shot at his or her dream. Everyone, no matter where they come from or problems they’ve faced, deserves a chance for success.
Let these movie heroes inspire you in feeling worthy of a shot at success. Let real-life successes like Steph Miller's blog inspire you to believe in being recognized for your own talents and gifts. Keep your eye on your dream no matter what.

Tip#496: Take it to the Next Level – Mrs. Major Tom – Footloose 2011
I am thrilled to announce that my friend, visual and recording artist Kirby Ian Anderson (K.I.A.), has a song that’s been covered by Grammy Award-winning Sheryl Crow. Her version of "Mrs. Major Tom" is included on William Shatner's latest space-themed album "Seeking Major Tom" along with other superstars U2, Elton John and Queen.
K.I.A. was inspired to write his original song because of David Bowie's classic "Major Tom" and recorded it for his second album "Adieu Shinjuku Zulu" in 2003. What's inspiring is that K.I.A. had a desire to take an already popular idea and launch it to another level. He ended up inspiring major people in the entertainment industry years later. He never approached Shatner or Crow. They came to him!
Original version "Mrs. Major Tom": Listen
Sheryl Crow's version "Mrs. Major Tom": Listen
Footloose 2011
The movie Footloose is a remake of the popular 80's film about city teen Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) moving into a small town where public dancing have been banned. His rebellious spirit and passion ends up shaking up the mindsets of the townspeople especially Rev. Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid).
What inspired and surprised me was how this version preserves the elements of the original that made it an 80's cult classic. Some of the dialogue is word-for-word. The dance sequences are just as electric if not even more exciting because the dance moves and songs have been updated. So this film is both nostalgic and new and thrilling to enjoy in today's age.
See: Movie trailer
See: Dance scene
The filmmakers took an already popular idea and launched it to another level. Now a whole new generation can enjoy the songs, dance and inspirational messages of an 80's film icon. Just like K.I.A.'s song "Mrs. Major Tom", his original idea to write a song based on an iconic tune will reach a whole new audience through Sheryl Crow's fan base as well as William Shatner's fans!
Be inspired to take something to the next level. Be inspired take existing ideas and take them further. And if you are feeling the urge to improve yourself or take your life, work, career or skills to the next level be confident in your success. There is proof of successes already around you!

Tip#495: Let Go of What You THINK You Know, Part 3 – 4 More Movie Tips
An amazing synchronicity occurred the same day I posted 4 movie recommendations to help you "Let Go of What You Think You Know" in tip#491. Career and life coach, Day Merrill, called me about facilitating more movie nights at Toronto's St. Andrew's United Church screening room (see tip#451). Her first recommendation surprised me!
She recommended Regarding Henry and realized that was another amazing film that demonstrates radically transforming one's mindset for a better life. I then began to think of more excellent films to recommend to inspire the need to rewrite one's mindset or "reboot" a career or life path.
Here are 4 movie recommendations:
Eat Pray Love 2010
After losing her money, home and husband, a woman (Julia Roberts) embarks on a soul-searching journey to Italy, India and Bali. When in Bali she learns to meditate and by emptying her mind would be the key to rebuilding positive perceptions of herself and her relationships in love.
The Matrix 1999
A young man (Keanu Reeves) is shown that the world he is living in is an illusion and is actually a computer construct. This shatters his mindset of what "he thinks he knows" and learns how to adapt to the truth around him. He soon realizes his own potential and incredible strengths and gifts.
Moneyball 2011
A general manager of a baseball team (Brad Pitt) realizes he needed to rewrite the process of recruiting players in order to rebuild his decimated team. He enlists a talented analyst (Jonah Hill) who has unique ability to "think outside the box" and creates stunning success with a new, unusual team.
Regarding Henry 1991
A cold-heart lawyer (Harrison Ford) experiences a dramatic life change after getting shot in a store robbery. He is reduced to having to re-learn how to walk and talk again and all the basics in living he took for granted. He ends up rebooting his compassion and loving side towards his family.
These are all powerful movies that can help inspire you to change your destructive habits of thinking. Sometimes it takes drastic life changes to help you let go of these habits. It may take weeks, months or even years to reboot your life. If you are on this path then let movie heroes inspire you along the way. Let their courage, perseverance and indestructible optimism guide you!

Tip#494: Keep Childlike Wonder Alive - Steve Jobs – Real Steel
I absolutely LOVE the iMac computer I am working on as I write this. It's the model with the hard-drive build right into the monitor and I am so grateful every day I'm on it. I use it for emailing, surfing the net, listening to music, watching movies, collecting my photos, creating artwork, making music, making videos, iChatting and Skyping and, of course, writing. Apple has immensely helped me enjoy the quality of my life AND my work and in that way creator Steve Jobs will live on forever.
Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc. passed away on October 5, 2011 and his legacy will always be with me. I love my iPod and listen to it everyday. I marveled at how small it was when they first came out. And when the touch screens came out on iPhones and iPads I was in awe. It was like the cool gadgets I loved in Sci Fi movies and the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV show (1987) was coming true in real life. Jobs helped keep that childlike wonder alive in me with the new products he'd create.
Real Steel 2011
The science fiction movie Real Steel takes place in the near future where former boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) works in the world of robot boxing matches. Soon Charlie finds himself caring for his estranged 11 year old son Max (Dakota Goyo) who quickly demonstrates a strong will and inner strengths beyond his years.
And though Max has a very grownup attitude he is still a kid that exudes glowing wonder at the stunning robots he encounters. The expression on his face while he sees his robot heroes up close is full of awe and glee. He also believes so much in the robot (Atom) he finds in a junkyard that his indestructible optimism makes a believer of his father too. Together Max and Charlie discover they are an excellent team and make their dreams come true with Atom as the ultimate underdog in the robot boxing world.
Max's expression of wonder was a mirror for me on how I feel about Apple's technologies. Steve Jobs has helped bring the world of Sci Fi into the present and it makes me feel excited to be alive every day I use my iMac or iPod. And whether you've experienced the joy of Apple products or not I hope you are keeping your childlike wonder alive. That sense of wonder is what fuels your positive energy and happiness! Feel that sense of awe today!

Tip#493: Find That Expert To Help You Succeed – Moneyball
REVELATION: I need a successful business expert/mentor to help harness and focus my overflowing creativity AND wealth of movie knowledge.
SOLUTION: Get out of my own way!
So there. I've just put it out to the world of what I first announced in tip#458 about seeking a mentor. And yet I keep diverging and digressing from this goal. Thankfully movies are helping me with solutions. I watched the thought provoking film Revolver again (see tip#286) and it reminded me that I really must prevent the "ego voice" part of me from sabotaging my dreams and goals.
I also know my daily meditations (see tip#482) are helping me and I still believe making inward changes WILL result in my external success with my goals. Once again, with a calm mind, my true inner voice (not the "ego" voice) led me to another ideal movie to excite my spirit and help me persevere...
Moneyball 2011
The movie Moneyball is based on a true story of general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and his unique and controversial scouting methods he used with the baseball team the Oakland Athletics. The story shows that when Beane was faced with an impossible task of rebuilding his decimated team he discovered and hired the analytical talents of Peter Brand (Jonah Hill).
Beane was a visionary and together with Brand rewrote the process of scouting and drafting baseball players. They both met with extreme resistance from others and it was a long road to seeing any success. Ultimately, the Athletics set an American league record of 20 consecutive wins.
I was deeply inspired to see this story of a man faced with an impossible task and finding the solution working with someone with a unique expertise and talent. This film reminded me that my goal is similar and to do my best and focus on finding that business expert/mentor that can help me to the next level of my career.
Sometimes we have revelations of what we need most in our lives or careers and yet there is a part of ourselves that fears taking the next step. It is that other part of ourselves we must tap into for achieving our goals. That part is filled with courage and willing to take risks. Tap into that part of yourself today!

Tip#492: Surround Yourself with Amazing Friends & Soul Buddies - 50/50
I feel so blessed that I am surrounded by amazing friends. Through the darkest of times (see tip#400) I've had the unconditional love and support of friends who I believe are actually angels in disguise. I've even mentioned some of them many times in this blog: Live Lighter/Writer Guru (Steph Miller) and Money/Wealth Guru (Patrick Bizindavyi). And I have so many other friends I call "soul buddies" who have stood by me whenever the world was crumbling around me.
One of these "soul buddies" recently helped me deal with an emotionally stressful challenge. What I needed was an expert in communication and relationship skills building and my friend and colleague Tammy Cunningham (Facilitator & Existential Detective) was there for me. She was the facilitator of the life-changing workshop I attended last year called The Mastery of Self-Expression. I wish everyone around the world was as blessed as I to have friends who'd be there through thick and thin.
50/50 2011
The movie 50/50 is a "dramedy" about a young man named Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who discovers he has a rare type of cancer. It is also about his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) who supports him on so many levels. Kyle is there helping lift his friend's spirit, stand firm against Adam's unfaithful girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard) and to help Adam to always see the bright side of having cancer (causing humorous results).
Cancer is no laughing matter and yet this movie is getting huge praise by film critics and audiences for balancing comedy with drama (dramedy). It also received a standing ovation at its premiere here at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story is loosely based on the life of screenwriter Will Reiser who's real-life friend Seth Rogen supported him when he was diagnosed with cancer at age 25.
If you are going through intense challenges in your life there is a chance that some friends will not be able to handle the situation. When that happens do your best to focus on the people who DO stand by you in your time of need. Hopefully you already have friends who are soul buddies AND angels in disguise. Just be open and honest about your challenges and these earth angels will reveal themselves with warm, glowing hearts and a hand to help you up!
