Writer Graham Moore gave one of the most inspiring speeches at this year’s 87th Academy Awards when he won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game. His message touched me deeply and was an important, uplifting message about depression. He said…
"When I was 16 years old I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong. And now I’m standing here and so I would like this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit anywhere. Yes you do. I promise you do. Stay weird. Stay different. And then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message to the next person who comes along."
See Video Clip
That speech got an emotional, standing ovation and garnered much praise in the media. I felt Moore’s message would make a positive difference for people suffering with depression right now around the world. His speech also inspired me find post Oscar interviews about his depression and insights that may be helpful to you or someone you know in the workplace. Here are key excerpts…
"I’m not gay, but I’ve never talked publicly about depression before or any of that and that was so much of what the movie was about, and it was one of the things that drew me to Alan Turing so much."
Variety.com
"I grappled with very severe depression when I was young, but I would also say this is something that has not gone away," Moore said. "This is something I've had to deal with every single day of my life. It's something that a lot of people deal with but not a lot of people talk about publicly."
"One of the things that's important about depression is it exists entirely independent of the external," Moore said. "It's not like winning a trophy makes depression go away, and I think that's one of the hardest things for people dealing with it. There's no external validation that makes it disappear. You have to deal with it internally."
Chicago Tribune.com
"A stranger came up to me and said, 'I've dealt with depression and with these issues for my whole life. I've never talked about it publicly before. Thank you for doing that. I feel now I can talk to my family about it and talk to the people around me about it,' " Moore says. "I got very teary and we gave each other a hug. Hearing that from strangers was just so meaningful to me."
People.com
These quotes from Moore could go a long way to better understanding mental health and depression. And hopefully he also inspires people to see The Imitation Game that also highlights a movie hero who felt different all his life and experienced both highs and lows.
The Imitation Game (2014)
The historical thriller film, The Imitation Game, is about British cryptanalyst Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) who helped solve the Enigma code during World War II. It is also the story about a gay man feeling different all his life and trying to fit in with society at the time. The film highlights Turing’s brilliance, successes, social awkwardness and final tragedy while showing the excitement of solving a problem that ended up saving countless lives. See: movie trailer
I highly recommend seeing this film for many motivational reasons such as resilience, teamwork, courage and for a movie hero who persevered as best as he could despite feeling different. Moore was inspired by Turing’s story growing up and it was his goal to bring awareness to this important man in history. Moore, in turn, brought more awareness to suicide and depression with his heartfelt Oscar speech.
If you or someone you know is dealing with depression and mental health at work or in your life please pass on this blog post. Inspiring movies and emotional speeches can be powerful Resilience Resources. They remind all of us to never give up, keep motivated and move forward no matter what.

Tip#829: Resilience Resources, Part 11 – The Tardigrade – Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
I was truly amazed and fascinated to learn about the most resilient creature on the planet called the Tartigrade. It can live in boiling water or in solid ice and can go ten years without any water or food. It has survived all five mass extinctions and sent into the vacuum and radiation of space and returned alive!
The Tardigrade is only the size of a pinpoint and has been called a water bear because of its appearance. And though it also looks like an alien creature from a Sci Fi film I look at the Tardigrade as a source of inspiration for being incredibly resilient. If this tiny guy can survive so many extremes in life I’d like to think that anyone could at least have the mental strength to survive the harsh things negative people can do OR say to you. A movie hero that demonstrates this resilient mindset is Longfellow Deeds.
More on the Tartigrade:
• 5 Reasons Why The Tardigrade Is Nature’s Toughest Animal
• Tardigrades: Adorable Extremophiles video clip
• Mike Shaw, Naturalist Interview on Tardigrades in Space video clip
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
The screwball comedy film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, is about a small-town man named Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) who inherits a fortune and moves to New York City. This Frank Capra classic is brimming with hilarious characters and memorable scenes. Capra also won an Oscar for Best Director. This movie is also on my Top 10 Feel Good Movies list (see tip#828). And if you love It’s a Wonderful Life you will love this film too.
While in the big city, Deeds eventually realizes that whatever he says and whatever good he tries to do with his fortune that the press and other people make him look like a fool. He is even committed to a hospital on an insanity warrant and then immediately put on trial. In the courtroom Deeds is made to appear mentally unstable. Wave after wave of testimony is thrown at him as he remains silent in defending himself. He looks utterly depressed and defeated. But once he hears that the woman he cares about loves him back his spirit jumps back to life in the fantastic finale.
Deeds and his resilience shines bright and this is a powerful message of staying strong no matter what negativity or opposition you are currently facing in the workplace or in life. Be inspired by movie heroes like Longfellow Deeds and by the indestructible powers of the microscopic Tardigrade. You have the inner strengths to persevere!

Tip#827: Follow Your Heart - Top Five
Depression can be very debilitating whether it is situational depression or mild clinical depression. But I believe that if you are passionate about something you can fuel your enthusiasm and drive to move forward even if just for a moment. For example no matter what lows I’ve experienced over the years my love for movies and for writing this blog always re-energizes my indestructible optimism. Following my heart refocuses me on joy rather than despair.
Check out this fascinating video clip of motivational speaker Tony Robbins help show a woman a method of transforming out of a depressed state quickly. It's an example of how focusing on a positive, feel good emotion (in this case a memory of an exciting sexual experience!) can break you out of a negative mind state. See: video clip
Top Five (2014)
The comedy film, Top Five, is about a successful movie star, Andre Allen (Chris Rock), at a crossroads in his career. With the help of a reporter named Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) Andre reveals his true stories and feelings about his life. All the performances are fantastic and funny and the film is filled with cameos like Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld and Ben Vereen. See: movie trailer
Rock also wrote and directed this film that seems to mirror elements of his own life experiences in hilarious scenes and also very heartfelt moments. And despite feeling challenged, his character Andre allows Chelsea to bring out his “rigorous honesty” about the reasons behind his unhappiness with his work and his love life. They end up helping each other get to the heart of each others problems and more forward with passion, joy and enthusiasm.
Following your heart is a matter of focus and when you do this your passion can flow and re-energize you no matter what adversities you face at work or in life. Be inspired by movie heroes that find the courage to change their life and follow what’s in their heart. Be inspired to bring out your own "rigorous honesty"!

Tip#826: See Life As An Adventure, Part 5 - Water for Elephants
“You’re in for the ride of your life!”
Water for Elephants (2011)
I continue to experience unusually high SAD/depression symptoms during this cold winter. And yet my indestructible optimism is keeping me focused on my positive vision of having vibrant mental health. I am using my own creative visualization techniques to expect my dreams and goals will manifest. And I remind myself each and every day that the highs and lows of my life is part of my adventure!
In searching for a new guided meditation on visualization I came across a wonderful one by Carrie Green, founder of the Female Entrepreneur Association in the UK (click here). In her video introduction she also recommended listening to inspirational music and shared a favourite that was the theme from the film Water for Elephants (only used in the movie trailer). Her love and enthusiasm for this music intrigued me to immediately watch the movie.
Thanks to Carrie, I once again felt I was magically and synchronistically led to this movie to lift me up just like the movie hero being led onto the adventure of his life despite the challenges he faced.
Water for Elephants (2011)
The romantic drama, Water for Elephants, is about Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson & Hal Holbrook) and his adventures joining the Benzini Brothers Circus after losing his home, career plans and parents to a car accident during the Great Depression. This film captures the magical excitement of the circus and has powerful performances by Pattinson, Holbrook, Christoph Waltz, Reese Witherspoon AND Tai as Rosie the elephant! See: movie trailer
There is one scene near the beginning where Jacob forces himself not to look back as he leaves his home for the last time and just moves forward. That is what creative visualization is about. You must keep focused on the future and not focused on your current adversities.
And though Jacob didn’t have a precise vision of what he wanted he felt his parents led him to jumping onto the circus train. He was open to having an adventure! He ended up experiencing living on a train, traveling across the US, using his talents and skills as a veterinarian, dressing and dining in upper class style AND finding love.
If you are going through challenges in the workplace or in life do your very best to define what you want and stay focused on a positive future for yourself. Listen to visualization meditations like Carrie Green’s and watch uplifting movies to inspire you and increase your positive emotional energy. And remember to always see your life as an adventure with all its highs and lows!

Tip#825: Resilience Resources, Part 10 – Mental Health & Healthcare - Big Hero 6
“I’m not giving up on you. You don’t understand this yet but people need you. So let’s get back to work.”
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Over the past year the topic of mental health and healthcare have been top of my mind not just for my life and work but to better help others close to me. I’ve also studied the importance of balanced neurotransmitters for proper brain and body function. Baymax was invented to be a personal healthcare companion. And when he sees Hiro in emotional pain from a death in the family he wants to help. Baymax downloads information on bereavement to better understand and help him heal. See: 2nd movie trailer focused on Baymax as healthcare companion
Whether it comes across as humorous or clinical, when Baymax speaks he actually shares important tips for helping someone with their mental, emotional and physical health. Even the power of a warm hug is demonstrated constantly. Science already shows that a hug releases the hormone oxytocin into our bodies lowering levels of stress hormones. Read: hug health benefits
