Tip#538: Unleash Your Inner Strength & Voice – The Mastery of Self Expression – 4 Movie Tips

This month I am celebrating a 2-year anniversary of receiving a big gift right after I claimed bankruptcy, lost my home and purged most of my worldly possessions. I was invited to participate in the 2 and 1/2 day intensive workshop called The Mastery of Self Expression. This workshop saved my crushed spirit on so many levels and it feels fantastic to look back at this turning point in my life! Read more on Tip#351

I am posting this the morning that I am assisting in another Mastery workshop here in Toronto facilitated by the great Larry Gilman and my friend and colleague Tammy Cunningham. It feels so good to give back and help this new group of individuals needing help to unleash their true voice. For you to get an idea of the life-changing benefits of this workshop I will share 4 movies that relate to the power of The Mastery experience.

Peaceful Warrior 2006
Movie Tip: Be guided by wise facilitators and coaches
The movie hero Dan (Dan Millman) is guided by an enigmatic and enlightened gas station attendant named Socrates (Nick Nolte) to let go of old ways of thinking. Dan learns how to achieve his dreams and goals by surrendering and trusting in Socrates' teachings and unusual exercises.

Eat Pray Love 2010
Movie Tip: Purge in order to move forward
The movie hero Liz (Julia Roberts) discovers that purging her life of unwanted relationships, money, belongings and home was necessary in order for her to move forward. Major clearing was the ultimate way for her to find true inner peace, the relationship she desired and the happiness she was seeking.

The Karate Kid 1984 & 2010
Movie Tip: Trust in unusual self-development processes
The young movie heroes of both versions of this film, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) in the original and Tre (Jaden Smith) in the latest each go through tasks that seem like mundane chores e.g. "wax on wax off". They later discover that they were experiencing a transformative self-development process that brought out their inner strengths and honed new skill sets.

The King's Speech 2010
Movie Tip: Find courage for positive change; Trust in a coach and facilitator
King George VI (Colin Firth) finds the courage to trust in the unorthodox healing methods of his speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Together they persevere to breakthrough old mindsets preventing the King from fully expressing himself, his voice and his greatness.

Tip#536: 4 Inspiring Movies to Celebrate Earth Day

Today is Earth Day and I have 2 friends who are having birthdays too so it is a triple celebration! One of those friends is someone I do regular movie nights with where we celebrate a shared passion for movies, delicious home cooked meals and friendship.

Earth Day is celebrated worldwide and is an opportunity for each of us to become more conscious of what we can do for our ailing environment.

Here are 4 movies to inspire you:

Avatar 2009

In the mid-22nd century, humans are mining a precious metal on a moon in another star system called Pandora. They run into conflict with the native inhabitants called the Na'vi who are spiritually connected to the land and all other beings on their world. The film is a powerful mirror for the slow destruction of our own planet and a lesson in living more in harmony with our remaining resources.

Wall-E 2008

In the future where there are no people left on the planet, a little robot named WALL-E is seen cleaning up a waste-covered Earth. He falls in love with another robot named EVE visiting Earth and follows her into outer space. His adventure helps change the destiny of humanity. This animated film is a mirror for how much waste we produce and our over consumption that is causing environmental damage.

The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008

In this remake, an alien visitor comes to Earth to save the world from humans who are destroying its environment and not able to change its ways. Throughout the story you see how spheres around the world are collecting every animal species like Noah's Ark. The lesson in the film is that humans are capable of great change but only when faced with crisis.

Evan Almighty 2007

In this sequel to Bruce Almighty, God asks Evan to build an ark because a flood is coming. Evan had prayed to God for help because, as a new congressman, he wanted to change the world. God gives him a powerful message that the way to change the world is by doing one Act of Random Kindness (ARK) at a time.

Let Earth Day inspire you to think about what YOU can do to improve our environment and re-vitalize our planet. And if changing the world seems overwhelming then remember the movie message that you can start by doing ONE Act of Random Kindness at a time!

Tip#535: You Can Rewrite Your Life, Part 1 – The Cabin in the Woods

Recently I have been rewriting and re-editing my first book based on my movie blog AND re-vamping my Motivatorman website and it has been a thrill! Through many motivating factors I have been extremely clear-headed, focused and keen on what I need to do! In fact, friends, colleagues and clients have been asking to re-edit their resume, blog content or promo material to add more clarity and sizzle!

This all relates to a movie I was drawn to seeing that re-writes its genre. At first the trailer for The Cabin in the Woods looks like a standard slasher/horror flick so I had no interest in seeing. I was finally stoked to see the movie only after film critics were enthusiastic about how unique it was with one reviewer actually saying to see the movie BEFORE reading his review! So that's what I did.

Cabin in the Woods (2012)

The movie The Cabin in the Woods is about five friends who go to a remote and mysterious cabin in the woods…

That's all I am going to say! If you want to experience what I mean about rewriting a genre, in this case, horror films then I HIGHLY recommend you see this movie without reading any reviews. If you love horror movies and you can handle some cinematic blood and guts then you are in for a unique ride. And you may gain insights on rewriting your own life or career and take it to a whole new level!

Seeking a more meaningful life or career means you must re-edit the script of your path. If you are unhappy with how things are remember that you have the power to make positive changes. You can rewrite how things are! Be bold and cut out what is not working in your life today.

Tip#534: Passion & Perseverance, Part 1 – 100th Year Anniversary - Titanic

I believe that a movie seen at different times of your life can affect you deeply in very different ways. This is why repeat viewings of a favourite movie can provide you new insights as well as being a source of entertainment or escape. I experience this all the time and one recent moment was from the epic film Titanic.

Today this post falls on April 15th which is the 100th year anniversary of the Titanic's sinking in 1912. And yesterday I felt compelled to see Titanic 3D just released in theatres so it was very synchronistic I share my new insights on one of my favourite movies. It is a film that clearly demonstrates the inspiring power of passion and perseverance.

Titanic (1997)

The epic romantic historical disaster movie Titanic won 11 Academy Awards including best picture. It tells the story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) coming from different social classes and falling in love aboard the glorious but doomed ship the RMS Titanic.

Along this journey you can feel the incredible passion between Jack and Rose. And you witness how this passion fuels each of them to persevere despite hopeless and catastrophic situations as the Titanic slowly sinks into the icy waters of the Atlantic. On my latest viewing of this film I gained new insights that Jack also had a deep passion for life.

A Passion for Life

Jack enjoyed every second of life and it didn't matter that he was poor or had no solid home. He was happy and grateful for every life experience whether it be selling his drawings for 10 cents on the streets of Paris or dining in first-class wearing a tuxedo aboard the Titanic. It was his passion for life that ultimately empowered and saved Rose to live a long and meaningful life.

Jack's passion and optimistic attitude towards life reflected back to me that I'm now living the same way especially after all recent life challenges I've experienced (see tip#400). Jack's strength was a mirror for me and I felt empowered to keep moving forward full of indestructible optimism!

Find passion in your own life and it will fuel your perseverance in whatever challenges you face. And if you develop a passion for life itself then every single moment will be meaningful, enjoyable and vibrant! Remember to make each day count!

"I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or, who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it. You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you... to make each day count."
Titanic (1997)

Tip#532: Personal Leadership, Part 2 – Schindler’s List

I recently facilitated a screening and discussion of Schindler's List on Good Friday for my client St. Andrew's United Church and I had a profound insight. For the first time I was able to see the movie hero, Oskar Schindler, as a master networker and entrepreneur. I recognized the core skill sets of a man who would later do something extraordinary and use his strengths to save over a thousand people during the Holocaust.

Part of the power of movies is that they can inspire and motivate you in different ways during different times of your life. When Schindler's List was first released in 1993 it helped educate me to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Because of the emotional intensities I could only watch it again in 2011. This time I was deeply inspired by the perseverance demonstrated by Schindler and the survivors. And in 2012 I was able to truly recognize the personal leadership of a man who chose to do great good with his skill sets.

Schindler's List 1993

Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg's movie Schindler's List is about Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand, mostly Polish Jewish, refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. As the film begins you witness how Schindler was a master networker by making social connections very quickly with key Nazi officials at a restaurant. He then hires Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to be his accountant and liaison with the Jewish community to help build his business.

As the horrors of the Holocaust escalate Schindler begins to use his network to save as many Jews as he can. He even uses up all his accumulated wealth from his business to buy and protect as many Jews as he could. Though this film may be a challenge to watch, Oskar Schindler's leadership qualities can inspire your own personal leadership in your life, career or business.

Personal leadership is about crystallizing your thinking and taking charge of the direction and destination of your own life. Movie heroes can reflect your potential and inner strengths to be a leader in your own story. You already have certain gifts, skills, strengths and talents. Just chose to apply them onto the path you desire with confidence, courage and passion!

Tip#531: Recognize the Emotional Charge When Your Buttons Get Pushed – It Happened One Night

I recently attended a workshop that solidified my belief that every encounter and relationship we have are valuable, even the unpleasant ones! Graham and Monika Burwise's weekend workshop called Master the Art of Relationships was filled with deeply powerful insights and tools for attracting the people you desire into your life. One of those insights for me was the emotional charge.

The emotional charge can be defined as uncomfortable or painful feelings. And when you have these feelings interacting with someone it means that they are reflecting a part of yourself that you've disowned in your past. In other words some relationships may feel negative but they are helping you become more whole. Becoming more whole then, on a deep energetic level, attracts the meaningful relationships you want.

It Happened One Night 1934

The romantic comedy It Happened One Night is a Frank Capra classic about a pampered socialite Ellen Andrews (Claudette Colbert) who runs away from her father and shares a road trip with a reporter Peter Warne (Clark Cable). Instantly upon meeting on a bus they are at odds with each other, continuously arguing.

As they share several adventures together on the road Peter shows Ellen another side of life she never knew. He shows her what it's like when you have no money, live with basic shelter and the joy of good, common folk. Ellen is introduced to a side of life she didn't grow up with and ultimately falls in love with Peter and he with her.

Be Open

If you know people who push your buttons and you experience uncomfortable or painful feelings with them be open to the concept that they are helping you see something about yourself. Be open to the idea that the emotional charge you feel is just a signal or indicator that you are being brought a lesson for becoming a better person. This is an opportunity for you to grow and attract the meaningful relationships you've been dreaming for.

Today you may feel that emotional charge with someone. Feel the pain and be open to the gift they are bringing you!

Tip#530: How Movies Mirror Your Inner Strengths, Part 1 - The Color of Money

“You gotta have two things to win. You gotta have brains and you gotta have balls. Now, you got too much of one and not enough of the other.”
The Color of Money (1986)

Recently, I've been in the process of formalizing something I love to do into a coaching/consulting service. This is providing movie prescriptions for people stuck in their life, career, business or workplace. I already do this on this movie blog and with anyone I meet who needs motivation. I was feeling stuck about creating some service packages so I meditated on what movie would help me gain insights and the film The Color of Money came to mind.

Synchronistically, this film was release the same year (1986) I formalized my love for art and illustration into a business and founded Crackers World Communications. At the time it developed very easily because I had many mini-mentors in the illustration industry to guide my passion towards helping magazine or newspaper articles and advertising purposes and be paid for it. The Color of Money film helped me identify key success factors I needed to focus on for the new, exciting services I wanted to develop now.

The Color of Money (1986)

The movie The Color of Money continues the story of pool hustler and stakehorse "Fast Eddie" Felson (Paul Newman) from the 1959 film The Hustler. In the story Fast Eddie is retired but revitalizes his spirit when he encounters a highly skilled but unfocused protégé named Vincent (Tom Cruise). Fast Eddie takes Vincent and his girlfriend on the road and teaches him how to play the game of pool hustling.

"If you got an area of excellence, you’re good at something, you’re the best at something,
anything, then rich can be arranged. I mean rich can come fairly easy.”

Insights from a Movie

The insights I received from this film were many. I saw myself in Fast Eddie in that he revitalizes his life and sense of purpose at his age. I also saw myself in Vincent in that he had a gift and took it further with guidance from a mentor/coach. Since then I reached out to other life, career and business coaches that are also friends for advice. This movie helped me get unstuck.

I also realized my confidence and self-worth needed a boost for monetizing something that comes so naturally for me. I made a list of the uniqueness of my gifts (USP, Unique Selling Proposition) that helped me identify my expertise. 4 examples are:

1) I HAVE a vast knowledge of movies that motivate
2) I HAVE written over 500 movie tips already online
3) I CAN instantly provide a movie prescription for someone
4) I AM an excellent motivator, facilitator, speaker, consultant, coach

Making a list like this for yourself is sure to increase your own self-worth and confidence.

Movies have the power to mirror what you need to be aware of to move forward when you feel stuck or lost. Movie heroes can remind you of your inner strengths, skills and gifts even if you've completely forgotten. Remembering your strengths will then re-activate your confidence AND self-worth so you can achieve your dreams and goals. Find a movie hero today to remind you of your greatness!
