Tip#521: Movies about Loving Movies – 4 Movies

The films The Artist and Hugo dominated the recent 84th Academy Awards. The Artist tied with Hugo winning 5 Oscars including best picture. What I loved is that both these films celebrated a love for cinema! They remind everyone everywhere of the magic and power movies offer for our hearts and minds.

I love watching movies whether it's on my computer, with friends on their big flat screen TVs or in the private screening rooms of my clients. And yet nothing beats going to a theatre with huge digital projection, surround sound and an audience! You are immersed in a sensory experience that truly activates and stirs your emotions. Here are 4 examples of movies that love movies…

The Artist 2011

This black and white silent movie captures the early magic of cinema. It tells the story of silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) enjoying his success and then needing to deal with the film industry's transition into talking pictures. You will experience the silliness and charm of actors with their exaggerated facial expressions and gestures to tell a story.

Hugo 2011

One of the story lines in this movie celebrates the groundbreaking silent films of Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley). In the story Méliès deals with depression over the end of his film-making days but is rejuvenated when a little boy, his friend and a film admirer reminds him of the lasting power of his film work. He is reminded that he touched people's hearts for years even though he never knew it.

Be Kind Rewind 2008

This comedy is about 2 video rental store workers Mike (Mos Def) and Jerry (Jack Black) who accidentally erase every tape. They come up with a wild idea and begin to re-shoot the movies using their own camera and zero budget. They hilariously re-create Ghostbusters, Driving Miss Daisy and Rush Hour 2 among others. Their endeavors end up cultivating a powerful spirit of community in their neighbourhood.

Cinema Paradiso 1988

This film is about a filmmaker (Salvatore 'Totò' Di Vita) who remembers when he fell in love with movies as a child just after World War II. He also recalls his deep friendship with the theatre's projectionist (Philippe Noiret) in his village. Though this movie is in Italian it demonstrates that the love of cinema is universal and can have strong, emotional effects that last a lifetime.

If you love movies then be aware that your passion is what energizes your life, career or business. The positive emotional energy you feel can fuel you during difficult times and just make you FEEL GOOD! Loving movies is shared all over the world so celebrate that you are already part of a massive global community!

Tip#520: Increase Your Strength - Haywire

Last month in January I discovered a Youtube video of a 110 year old man, Bernardo LaPallo, sharing the secrets of his longevity. He looked so good and could have been in his 70's! He said he ate organic fruit and vegetables, no red meat but lamb was okay. And everyday he had these 5 foods: Garlic, Honey, Cinnamon, Olive Oil and Chocolate. See: video

Seeing this video was extremely synchronistic because I just started to focus on improving my health in January. I was so down in physical energy and spirit. I discovered I had S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder), also known as winter depression. When I added supplements to my diet, like 4,000 IU of vitamin D and using a full spectrum light, I immediately felt more energized again. Seeing this amazing 110 year old man inspired me to start thinking of my long term health.

Haywire 2012

The action thriller Haywire is about a black ops super soldier named Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) who seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during an assignment. What is unique about Kane is that she is played by a real mixed martial arts fighter. Her experience shines through in the physically impressive fight scenes. And yet she still retains her femininity throughout the film.

One scene that inspired me was a long chase with Kane being tracked by the camera in one take. Her running and stamina made me question whether I could run like that. And there may have been several takes for these scenes so she was very fit! She made me want to increase my own strength and optimize my health!

Be inspired by cinematic role models to be as physically fit as you can be. Start thinking long term like the 110 year old man and actresses like Carano. After all, what is the point of having dreams and goals come true if you are not healthy or strong enough to enjoy it?

Tip#519: The Power in Surrender – Message from Oprah - Mitch Albom’s Have a Little Faith

Whenever I feel deeply stuck and movies or good friends are not able to lift me up I have learned to just surrender my will over to a higher power. Some call it God, Source, the Universe, the Vortex or even The Force from Star Wars. I choose to call this higher power God. And after I surrender I always feel my confidence and indestructible optimism rise again!

There is a video on Youtube that I highly recommend which always reminds me of the power of surrender. It's a short video with Oprah Winfrey sharing how she got the part in Steven Spielberg's film The Color Purple by surrendering to God. She talks about something she deeply wanted and the blocks that prevented her dream from coming true. The story will amaze you! See: Oprah video

Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith 2011

The Hallmark TV movie, Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith is about the life lessons learned by a journalist (Bradley Whitford) about two men of God, rabbi Albert Lewis (Martin Landau) and pastor Henry Covington (Laurence Fishburne). There are many motivating messages in this film and thought-provoking moments that are all based on a true story.

The power of surrender is demonstrated when Covington's drug-dealing life of crime has reached a hopeless impasse. He finally surrenders and prays to God for help. He offers himself in service to God's will. Miracles soon flow and the quality of Convington's life vastly improves. By focusing on being of service to others he makes a positive, lasting difference with all the people around him.

If you are feeling utter despair or deeply stuck remember Oprah's story about surrender and Covington's choice to hand his will over to a higher power. Seek out other stories to inspire you about the power of surrender. Remind yourself that no matter where you are that you are never alone. A higher power is ALWAYS with you.

Tip#518: See How Passion Becomes Magnetic, Part 3 - Akeelah and the Bee

“You know that feeling where everything feels right? Where you don't have to worry about tomorrow or yesterday, where you feel safe and know you're doing the best you can? There's a word for that, it's called love. L-O-V-E”
Akeelah and the Bee

I love movies so much that I watch an average of 5 to 10 movies per week. In return this passion fills me with positive emotional energy making me feel good AND fueling my drive to persevere with my dreams and goals. Ultimately my passion attracts other movie lovers via social media like this movie blog and on Facebook, LinkedIn and my Youtube channel.

Akeelah and the Bee 2006

The movie Akeelah and the Bee is about 11 year old Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) and her passion for words. And because of her gift for spelling Akeelah's teachers encourage her to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee becoming a journey to face fears and obstacles. She perseveres because of her passion and the powerful support of her coach Dr. Joshua Larabee (Laurence Fishburne).

This film is an excellent example of how one person's passion can fuel her perseverance AND rally a strong sense of community. Akeelah's spelling competitions attracts and inspires members of her community, her school and unlikely individuals to cheer her on. Akeelah's passion helps to transform all the people witnessing her journey. See: movie trailer

Tip#517: The Power of Community and The Media, Pt.1 – Big Miracle

I am always inspired when I see, in the media, how communities come together after a disaster occurs. News reports would capture the world's attention like the Chilean miners rescue in 2010, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and 9/11 in New York City 2001.

These events can touch people's hearts and engage them in the gripping stories that unravel. Challenges can also prompt people to cast aside their differences in order to solve a common goal. And it doesn't have to be a huge global disaster to activate heartfelt action, it could even be initiated by a family of whales trapped by ice.

Big Miracle 2012

The family drama Big Miracle is inspired by the true 1988 events of gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska. Local news reporter Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) first breaks the news which quickly catches the attention of many key people wanting to help across the US. From there on in millions of people are hooked on all the latest news of the rescue of the family of 3 whales. And social media didn't even exist at this time!

What is interesting about this film is it shows how many individuals and organizations have vastly different motivations for saving these whales. Greenpeace activist Rachel Kramer (Drew Barrymore) is continually at odds with oil tycoon J.W. McGraw (Ted Danson) while the US government wants to help for its own agenda.

The movie becomes a lesson in learning to work together for a common goal while putting ego and other motivations aside. It shows how community can ultimately prevail when any disaster strikes. Communities and the media can be powerful allies. Wouldn't it be an amazing world if we all learned something about teamwork from a family of whales?

Tip#516: Focus & Persevere, Part 1 – Tyler Perry - War Horse

Recently, I saw a very inspiring YouTube video by actor, playwright and entrepreneur Tyler Perry, the highest paid man in entertainment according to Forbes earning $130 million in 2011. In the short video clip Perry shared key factors for his success and two that resonated the most for me was to focus and persevere.

Perry says you must choose ONE dream or goal and pursue it no matter what. His dream was to write and perform his plays and did it once a year despite very small audiences and financial failures. He was even homeless during some of this time. He persevered and stayed focused. Eventually fame and fortune came to him and is able to inspire people with his story. See: Tyler Perry video

War Horse 2011

The movie War Horse is set before and during World War I and is about the astounding strength and resilience of a horse named Joey. Despite the negative beliefs of people about Joey, he is able to plough a stony hillside field and survive years of intense challenges on the battlefields of France. And it was Albert (Jeremy Irvine) that always believed in Joey, training him with skill sets that helped the horse endure.

I usually feature movie heroes that are human and yet I found personal inspiration in the strength of this horse. Joey demonstrated an unbreakable will to persevere and he inspired everyone he encountered during the war. Director Steven Spielberg has created yet another film with a compelling story of triumph and hope.

"Can you imagine flying over a war and you know you can never look down? You have to look forward, or you'll never get home."
War Horse

If you have a dream or goal you've been pursuing for years stay focused and persevere. Be inspired by real-life stories like Tyler Perry’s and movies that can inspire you to always move forward. Then YOU will inspire others with your own stories of success!

Tip#515: Get Energized by Cinematic Thrills - Chronicle

Today I am celebrating the return to blogging twice a week. I made a decision after 5 years and posting my 500th tip that I would just write once a week. But after 3 months I realized how much I loved writing and sharing movies that motivate me that I am following my impulse to do more of what I love!

Plus, 2012 is chock full of exciting movies to blog about like the highly anticipated superhero movies The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers. Superheroes are another passion of mine growing up so it is an absolute thrill to see favourite comic book heroes come to life on the big screen. It is a thrill to see live action scenes of people using their super powers AND flying through the skies above!

Chronicle 2012

The science fiction movie Chronicle is presented as "found footage" of 3 high school friends who gain superhuman abilities. Andrew (Dane DeHaan) is the primary videographer documenting themselves as they master telekinetic powers such as controlling objects with his mind. Though they have fun being mischievous with their new powers the film also explores the dark side of abusing it.

One of the exciting aspects of this movie is it allows you to feel what it is like to fly. If you’ve ever had a dream of flying these exhilarating scenes will thrill you! Scenes like this are what reminds me of why I LOVE movies. I get filled with so much positive emotional energy that I am inspired to move forward in any aspect of my life or work. I get a charge and buzz from cinematic thrills!

When you are having a positive experience watching a movie be conscious of how good you feel. Be aware that there is a difference in how you felt before and after the film. Now take that positive emotional energy and apply it to accomplishing a task or goal for your day. That way you will recognize the energizing power of movies!

Tip#514: Let Go of What You THINK You Know, Part 4 – The Artist

When you've gone through as many unexpected life changes as I have (see tip#400) you eventually learn to surrender to the flow of a river you've just been dropped into. I've learned to be open to whatever direction life has in store for me. I've learned to have faith.

Of course, sometimes I can still feel resistance in the silliest ways. For example the movie The Artist had a positive buzz about it even before it hit theatres. And even though it won a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Motion Picture I still couldn't see how good a silent movie could be in this day and age!

And so after it got nominated for 10 Academy Awards I kept an open mind and pushed myself to see The Artist. My faith was rewarded with a magical, cinematic journey that, in the end, lifted my spirits sky high!

The Artist 2011

The comedy-drama The Artist is about a late 1920's silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) who's popularity and livelihood is challenged by the invention of talking films. Valentin refuses to adapt to the change and begins a slow descent into depression. It is only through a young actress named Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) that he is able to keep moving forward in life.

What I just wrote was much more than I knew before seeing this movie. It has to be seen to experience the magic that unfolds. I am just grateful that, just like in the film, I learned to stop resisting my preconceptions of this black and white silent movie and just see it.

Unexpected change in life and work can sometimes feel uncomfortable and even painful. Sometimes the best way to face these situations is to surrender to the path you feel forced upon. Your resistance may be out of fear and yet may also be what prevents you from experiencing a bigger and brighter future.
