This is Day 222 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.
Pandemic life continues to be surreal as we enter the chilly winter months. I’ve started to feel seasonal depression symptoms which, thankfully, are about a month later than usual this year. What’s been helping me cope is continued outdoor walking therapy, nutritional diet and creating my daily social media content. I’ve also been watching the comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, written and starring Larry David who helped create the Seinfeld series. It is also known as “cringe comedy”.
“Cringe comedy is a specific genre of comedy that derives humor from
social awkwardness. Often a cringe comedy will have an air of a
mockumentary and revolve around a serious setting, such as a workplace,
to lend the comedy a sense of reality.”
Wikipedia
Cringe comedy also relates to the film work of actor Sacha Baron Cohen who just released his sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. The surprise announcement that this film even existed was released just two weeks from the upcoming presidential elections in the US and even includes a controversial scene with attorney and former Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani. Cringe comedy indeed!
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)
The mockumentary comedy, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, is a sequel story about the fictional Kazakh journalist and television personality Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) who must offer his 15-year-old daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova) as a bride to Vice President Mike Pence. As with the previous 2015 film, this movie is overflowing with cringe comedy and hilarious, shocking scenes with real, unsuspecting people across the USA.

If you’ve seen the first Borat film then you know exactly what to expect from this movie! There are many rude and crude scenes and real, unwitting people in situations that make you laugh uncomfortably or cringe with how unbelievable the scene is. Cohen continues to demonstrate how bold and relentless his guerilla-style film making is with his elaborate disguises. And actress Maria Bakalova is amazing in her own performance who shares the scene with Giuliani.
It’s best you watch without knowing any more details so you can fully enjoy the surprises in the film. Cringe comedy can take you places that are uncomfortable but also make you really think about human behaviour and the shocking state of how others treat or view other people. And in the end you will at least enjoy the benefits of laughter therapy!
Remember the power of films or TV shows that can help you deal with depression or times of uncertainty or stress. Cinema therapy or laughter therapy are tools for you to immediately engage in to feel better. Utiilize a tool today to feed your resilience and lift your spirits up!
