This is Day 215 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.
This week I did my first Hosting of a new monthly Zoom group called High Notes Movie Club commissioned by the awesome mental health organization High Notes Avante. It was fun and it was a wonderful chance for people in isolation to share their passion for films and how they inspire and uplift their spirits during this pandemic.

I shared three films on my Top 10 Feel Good list that helped me cope with depression over the years that included Groundhog Day, It’s a Wonderful Life and The Artist. Someone then mentioned The Sound of Music as their go-to film that prompted others in the Zoom meeting nodded in agreement that they also love to watch over and over again. It was also discussed how singing helps stimulate and heal the body that has experienced some sort of trauma.

Laughter was also talked about for its rejuvenating power for the body and mind. This made me think of the vast variety of comedy films available for people to watch for accessing the healing power of laughter. For me I happen to really enjoy Adam Sandler comedies. And though some people may not like his films they are a favourite cinematic tonic for lifting my mood!
Hubie Halloween (2020)
The comedy horror film, Hubie Halloween, is about Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) a socially ridiculed delicatessen employee in Salem, Massachusetts, who must save the town from a mysterious kidnapper on Halloween night. This hilarious movie is filled with the Sandler’s brand of rude and crude humour and also stars Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Rob Schneider, June Squibb, Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Buscemi, and Maya Rudolph.

Hubie is another of Sandler’s goofy but lovable characters that happens to have many special skills and even a cool, super thermos that’s like the ultimate Swiss army knife (umbrella, megaphone, vacuum cleaner, telescope, etc.). There is also a running gag with Hubie’s mother showing off her collection of funny slogan t-shirts she got at a thrift store.
And along with all the scenes that made me laugh there are heartwarming life lessons like having one or two people that believe in you as well as finding the courage to face life long fears. Hubie gets to experience these precious positives despite the entire town treating him so poorly and as the butt of a never-ending joke. Thankfully Hubie lets us laugh at his resilient responses and still maintain his silly, yet compassionate, childlike personality.
We all have favourite films that can make us laugh when we need it most. Some may be classic comedies and some may be rude and crude and risky. And yet if you know which comedies are the cinematic tonic you enjoy then remember to watch them when you are feeling low. Remember the power of laughter can tickle your sad side and lift you up!
