Tip#1219: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 25 – Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

This is Day 222 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

Pandemic life continues to be surreal as we enter the chilly winter months. I’ve started to feel seasonal depression symptoms which, thankfully, are about a month later than usual this year. What’s been helping me cope is continued outdoor walking therapy, nutritional diet and creating my daily social media content. I’ve also been watching the comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm, written and starring Larry David who helped create the Seinfeld series. It is also known as “cringe comedy”.

“Cringe comedy is a specific genre of comedy that derives humor from social awkwardness. Often a cringe comedy will have an air of a mockumentary and revolve around a serious setting, such as a workplace, to lend the comedy a sense of reality.”
Wikipedia

Cringe comedy also relates to the film work of actor Sacha Baron Cohen who just released his sequel, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. The surprise announcement that this film even existed was released just two weeks from the upcoming presidential elections in the US and even includes a controversial scene with attorney and former Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani. Cringe comedy indeed!

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

The mockumentary comedy, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, is a sequel story about the fictional Kazakh journalist and television personality Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) who must offer his 15-year-old daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova) as a bride to Vice President Mike Pence. As with the previous 2015 film, this movie is overflowing with cringe comedy and hilarious, shocking scenes with real, unsuspecting people across the USA.

If you’ve seen the first Borat film then you know exactly what to expect from this movie! There are many rude and crude scenes and real, unwitting people in situations that make you laugh uncomfortably or cringe with how unbelievable the scene is. Cohen continues to demonstrate how bold and relentless his guerilla-style film making is with his elaborate disguises. And actress Maria Bakalova is amazing in her own performance who shares the scene with Giuliani.

It’s best you watch without knowing any more details so you can fully enjoy the surprises in the film. Cringe comedy can take you places that are uncomfortable but also make you really think about human behaviour and the shocking state of how others treat or view other people. And in the end you will at least enjoy the benefits of laughter therapy!

Remember the power of films or TV shows that can help you deal with depression or times of uncertainty or stress. Cinema therapy or laughter therapy are tools for you to immediately engage in to feel better. Utiilize a tool today to feed your resilience and lift your spirits up!

Tip#1218: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 24 – Hubie Halloween

This is Day 215 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

This week I did my first Hosting of a new monthly Zoom group called High Notes Movie Club commissioned by the awesome mental health organization High Notes Avante. It was fun and it was a wonderful chance for people in isolation to share their passion for films and how they inspire and uplift their spirits during this pandemic.

Join my monthly gatherings: High Notes Movie Club

I shared three films on my Top 10 Feel Good list that helped me cope with depression over the years that included Groundhog Day, It’s a Wonderful Life and The Artist. Someone then mentioned The Sound of Music as their go-to film that prompted others in the Zoom meeting nodded in agreement that they also love to watch over and over again. It was also discussed how singing helps stimulate and heal the body that has experienced some sort of trauma.

Laughter was also talked about for its rejuvenating power for the body and mind. This made me think of the vast variety of comedy films available for people to watch for accessing the healing power of laughter. For me I happen to really enjoy Adam Sandler comedies. And though some people may not like his films they are a favourite cinematic tonic for lifting my mood!

Hubie Halloween (2020)

The comedy horror film, Hubie Halloween, is about Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) a socially ridiculed delicatessen employee in Salem, Massachusetts, who must save the town from a mysterious kidnapper on Halloween night. This hilarious movie is filled with the Sandler’s brand of rude and crude humour and also stars Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Rob Schneider, June Squibb, Kenan Thompson, Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Buscemi, and Maya Rudolph.
Watch: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now:

Hubie is another of Sandler’s goofy but lovable characters that happens to have many special skills and even a cool, super thermos that’s like the ultimate Swiss army knife (umbrella, megaphone, vacuum cleaner, telescope, etc.). There is also a running gag with Hubie’s mother showing off her collection of funny slogan t-shirts she got at a thrift store.

And along with all the scenes that made me laugh there are heartwarming life lessons like having one or two people that believe in you as well as finding the courage to face life long fears. Hubie gets to experience these precious positives despite the entire town treating him so poorly and as the butt of a never-ending joke. Thankfully Hubie lets us laugh at his resilient responses and still maintain his silly, yet compassionate, childlike personality.

We all have favourite films that can make us laugh when we need it most. Some may be classic comedies and some may be rude and crude and risky. And yet if you know which comedies are the cinematic tonic you enjoy then remember to watch them when you are feeling low. Remember the power of laughter can tickle your sad side and lift you up!

Tip#1217: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 23 – Top 5 Inspiring Thanksgiving Movie Scenes

This is Day 209 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

It’s Thanksgiving here in Canada and I’ve had a lot of mixed emotions. I wasn't able to be with siblings for our annual family dinner and there were recent re-closures for indoor restaurant dining, movie theatres and more by the province. COVID-19 cases have been increasing in this 2nd wave and it’s looking like the start of a bleak holiday season.

Thankfully my mental health has been stable and I haven’t had any seasonal depression (SAD) symptoms yet. I am hoping that the past 7 months of my new diet of nutrient dense foods (read more) and extra outdoor walking exercises are the reasons. And for Thanksgiving I am so grateful that my siblings did a physical distanced drop off and pick up of delicious foods we contributed to each other’s holiday dinners.

Ultimately what got me through the blues of Thanksgiving this year was seeing on YouTube some uplifting movie clip compilations of Thanksgiving scenes in movies I’ve loved. But I was inspired to edit my own video with my top 5 favourite Thanksgiving scenes which included:

• Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
• Jack & Jill (2011)
• The Blind Side (2009)
• Funny People (2009)
• Trains, Planes & Automobiles (1987)

See my video here: Top 5 Inspiring Thanksgiving Movie Scenes

There are actually many memorable scenes about Thanksgiving in the movies but these are favourites that touched my aching heart as I spent this holiday weekend and dinner alone. At the same time I also felt tremendous gratitude for my creative skills that I utilized to stay resilient and positive. This video was a way to express my sadness and also joy through scenes that mirrored my loneliness and also shining hope for a more optimistic future.

If you are feeling alone on Thanksgiving remember to watch your favourite holiday films to lift you up. Eat up all the delicious foods you see on screen with your eyes! Let these movies make you laugh or let yourself cry with happy or sad tears. And finally, let their messages feed your resilience and optimism for brighter days to come!

Tip#1216: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 22 – Kiss the Ground

This is Day 202 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

The Autumn season always brings a colourful change in the seasons and for me it’s brought a multitude of wonderful changes and opportunities! First was finally getting my haircut after seven months and it felt fantastic and lighter. Then two great opportunities for building online communities have come up revolving around my food & mood posts and uplifting movie tips. I cannot say anymore but stay tuned for details!

Next I celebrated at Halibut House for my friend Derek’s birthday and a bon voyage for his work trip to New Zealand. Then I had my first virtual wedding celebration for another friend, Lynda which was done on Zoom. It was an emotional experience seeing her and others I haven’t seen in person for months. But we each received a special package delivered in advance filled with party snacks, games and even champagne we opened during the gathering to toast the bride and groom!

I also made some personal deliveries of food gifts to family and a friend. It brought me so much joy to see them appreciate some of the nutrient dense foods I’ve added in my daily diet. I felt so excited describing the health benefits of raw, unpasteurized cheese to them and how my life has changed being more aware of how these foods originate from grass fed cows, chickens, etc. And thankfully there was a fantastic documentary that takes this even further with the critical importance of the healthy soil these animals feed on.

Kiss the Ground (2020)

The documentary, Kiss the Ground, features science experts and celebrity activists demonstrating ways the earth's regenerated soil may be the key to combating climate change and preserving the planet. This highly engaging and informative film outlines many common sense steps any one can take to help improve our environment, lives and health. Narrated by actor Woody Harrelson.

This documentary expands on what I first learned about the life-saving nutrients in soil from the film, The Martian (see tip#1056). That movie showed it was possible to grow potatoes on the dead dirt of Mars by revitalizing it with water and the astronaut’s feces. The bacteria in the feces was an important factor and is what this documentary proves is possible with revitalizing dead soil all over our planet.

Regeneration is a term this film speaks about and presents John D. Liu, Ecologist, who documented the miraculous change at Loess Plateau, China that had no vegetation. From 1994 until 2009 (14 years), they successfully regenerated an area of 35,000 square kilometres (14,000 square miles) into stunning, lush green fields. This then helped revitalize the community and health of its people.

There’s also a fun scene I loved showing microscopic video of bacteria with the song, “You Sexy Thing”. This scene shows that tiny, living beings are coexisting inside us all and get depleted because most of our foods are devoid of healthy bacteria. Nutrient dense foods must come from living soil brimming with these microscopic beings. This made me remember another great scene of regeneration of the dead soil to produce healthy vegetation and animals in the film, “The Biggest Little Farm” (see tip#1179).

Another scene I loved demonstrated how much better and healthier pasture-raised eggs were versus cage-free eggs from chickens only eating grains (a step up from factory raised chickens crammed together in cages). They showed how much more orange and denser the yolk was in a pasture-raised egg which means it has a higher percentage of vitamins and minerals from happy chickens living and eating in outdoor sunlight and rich, open fields. Autumn may be a time of nature dying but there will be another season for it to regenerate. This could be a mirror for great life-changes and regeneration for your own self.

Documentaries can help open your eyes to little changes in your daily life like healthier foods you can eat or how to save the environment you live in. Be inspired today to make any small change to improve the quality and enjoyment of your life!
