Over the past few weeks I have been meeting a number of warm-hearted life coaches. 3 of them attended a recent movie screening and discussion that I facilitate at the cozy St. Andrews United Church screening room here in Toronto (see tip#451). The movie we showed was Morning Glory and one of these coaches was very inspired. She later shared how The Horse Whisperer movie affected her deeply as well.
This was amazing synchronicity because I planned to see the new documentary Buck that is based on the real horse whisperer. So I immediately watched both movies as a double feature and was moved and inspired by the each of the movie heroes and their stories.
The Horse Whisperer 1998
The movie The Horse Whisperer is about a gifted horse trainer and healer named Tom Booker (Robert Redford). His services are pursued by Annie (Kristen Scott Thomas) to help her teenage daughter's injured horse after a traumatizing accident. Booker can see that her daughter (Scarlett Johansson) also needed emotional healing as well so agrees to the task.
Over the course of the story all four characters go through profound personal transformations. You also learn and recognize powerful lessons of how compassion and patience are needed for both the horse's rehabilitation AND for human beings suffering emotional pain and anguish.
Buck 2011
The documentary film Buck features the life, career and philosophy of the real-life "horse whisperer" Buck Brannaman. The movie explores Buck's childhood life with a physically abusive father and how it helped him forge a unique and gifted approach to handling difficult horses. Robert Redford is also interviewed and shares how inspired he was with Buck's warm personality and compassionate attitude. Redford incorporated Buck's spirit into his performance as Booker in The Horse Whisperer film.
Buck says, "Rather than help people with horse problems I'm helping horses with people problems." Buck believes that a horse’s behaviour mirrors their owners. So he teaches the owners to demonstrate compassion and patience with their horses with dramatic results. You will be amazed at the transformations.
The idea of the horse mirroring people is similar to my belief in the movie heroes we resonate. They can mirror our innate, inner strengths and potential. And if we seek to better ourselves in some way we just need to be open to the possibilities. Be open today with anything you feel is mirroring you in some way. It is reflecting something you need to see about yourself for positive change!
