Tip#1242: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 48 – Housesitter

This is Day 389 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

This has been a challenging and depressing week. Right after Toronto went into lock down a new stay-at-home order was enforced for 30 days. That means people can only leave their homes for essentials like food and medical, work or exercise.

So I’ve been using this time to build my followers on Instagram and created a new channel specifically on my Movies for Motivation tips and my monthly High Notes Movie Club on Zoom.

I also posted the first of an 8 part video presentation I gave on Food & Mood for the mental health organization, The Stability Network. Here I shared my experiences and food discoveries that helped improve my seasonal depression symptoms, cope with isolation and boosted my overall health and wellness. See: Food & Mood video Part 1

Focusing on all these creative endeavors was also a coping strategy for dealing with the stress and anxiety of this prolonged isolation. And I’ve also been watching favourite comedy films from my youth to lift me up and laugh!

Housesitter (1992)

The romantic comedy film, Housesitter, is about a waitress, Gwen (Goldie Hawn) with con-artist tendencies, who talks her way into the life and dream home of architect, Newton (Steve Martin) by claiming to be his wife to all his friends and family. This hilarious story also stars Dana Delany, Julie Harris, Donald Moffat and Peter MacNicol.

This movie was truly cinematic comfort food! The humour was also still fresh and the performances were delightfully fun and memorable. Hawn and Martin are fantastic together and that scene where his character is forced to sing Tura Lura Lura in order to make his father cry tears of joy was still priceless!

What I loved more than ever, that I only realized after years of personal development, is how this film was also an excellent example for creative visualization and law of attraction. The characters demonstrate how to change destructive, catastrophic thinking and use imagination to create a more positive future. Yes, the characters are lying but they are also being creative and choosing to tell stories/fables of what they need like getting job promotions or wanting a dream marriage. The fun is that it all manifests in the movie!

Be inspired to tell yourself a more positive story about the life you want when present situations appear hopeless. Find a favourite film to make you smile and help re-energize your imagination to visualize more exciting days, relationships or jobs. Let these films inspire amazing new possibilities for your future!
