This is Day 327 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.
One of the silver linings of spending time alone in lockdown during this long pandemic was learning to be kinder to myself. Showing myself kindness and more self-love has helped me feel more worthy and deserving of the joys this world has to offer. And, in turn, I am more rejuvenated to extend kindness and joy to others!
Random acts of kindness to myself helped me say yes to treats that I normally would’ve talked myself out of having such as ordering a whole Chinese BBQ duck or a Popeye’s delicious chicken sandwich. I also treated myself over these many months with high quality foods like farm fresh pastured eggs, cod liver oil from Norway and lots of delicious, raw, unpasteurized cheeses from France!
These high quality foods were expensive and would have been the reason not to get them but my acts of self-kindness helped increase my self-worth and know in my heart that “I AM WORTH IT!”. And I know that this personal achievement was a result of acknowledging and healing childhood bullying. Thanks to years of empowering group therapy I learned that bullying had sabotaged my self-worth and self-esteem.
I am grateful that I continue to heal a little more each day thanks to my therapy tools such as daily affirmations and movie therapy. And this theme of kindness popped up unexpectedly in a Disney film that I recently saw. It also had the theme of bullying and how to stay resilient!
Cinderella (2015)
The romantic fantasy film, Cinderella, is based on the folk tale and Walt Disney's 1950 animated film of the same name. It’s about Cinderella (Lily James) dealing with multiple adversities in life including her wicked stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and how she finds love with a prince (Richard Madden). This wonderful live action adaptation is filled with magical scenes, outstanding, rich costumes and memorable performances by the cast that also include Stellan Skarsgård, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi, and Helena Bonham Carter.

This is one of those movies that I felt magically guided to seeing years after it’s release to lift me up during seasonal, winter depression. It came at a perfect time to remind me of important life lessons. These lessons were about maintaining courage and kindness no matter what happens in life. And seeing Cinderella subjected to such cruelty and bullying by her stepmother and stepsisters was, at times, difficult to watch. I knew it was because it was mirroring my own childhood pain and helping me face my own unresolved issues.
At the same time, I was inspired by Cinderella’s amazing resilience and perseverance and how she maintained her courage and kindness taught to her by her parents. She mirrored my own inner strengths! She has become a new cinematic role model for me because of her shining inner strengths that no one could sabotage!
Movie heroes have the magical ability to speak to your heart and encourage you to be strong in difficult times. They can remind you to maintain confidence in yourself and to practice kindness in the face of cruelty and hopelessness. Give yourself an act of kindness today and feel revitalized and empowered to be your best, shining self!
