Tip#918: Cultivate Supportive Relationships, Part 8 - The Intern

“It’s moments like this when you need someone you know you can count on.”
The Intern (2015)

I continue to receive heartfelt encouragement and congratulations via email, letters, Twitter and Facebook for my CBC Radio interview on the Fresh Air Show (listen here) and for my new eBook Movie Messages of Hope for The Holidays (details here). It feels so empowering to receive acknowledgement for the sensitive work I am doing to increase mental health awareness around depression. It is this kind of support that further fuels my confidence and drive to really help others!

Seeing the movie Joy also revved me up for achieving my work goals in the coming new year of 2016 (see tip#917). And synchronistically I just saw The Intern that felt like part 2 to remind me of the essentials for cultivating supportive relationships!

The Intern (2015)

The comedy film, The Intern, is about 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) who becomes a senior intern at an online fashion company founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). What unfolds is a hilarious and inspiring story demonstrating that people at any age can provide great value and service. Wonderful performances by De Niro, Hathaway and a supportive cast that includes Renee Russo, Zack Perlman, Anders Holm and Adam Devine. See: movie trailer

At first Ben clearly appears to be an outsider amongst his much younger 20 something co-workers but soon becomes extremely helpful and mentors a select number of colleagues in the open spaced work environment. And though resistant at first to Ben’s presence, Jules realizes his wisdom and old school approach to business and work ethics are invaluable and life changing. In turn he benefits from her entrepreneurial spirit and online expertise.

This film is brimming with lessons for improving the work culture, generational respect and the importance of cultivating supportive relationships. Director Nancy Meyers wrote and directed The Intern as well as four other favourite films like Baby Boom, What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give and The Holiday. All these films have many life lessons especially with how people are the bottom line in business, at work and in life.

Inspiring Themes:
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Acknowledgement & Appreciation
• Leadership & Teamwork
• Entrepreneurial Spirit

The New Year is coming soon so I hope you have an idea of the dreams and goals you want to achieve. Let movies and movie heroes inspire you to remember to find people who believe in your talents and expertise! These supportive relationships will help you find success and enjoy the journey along the way!

And thank you for reading my blog and all your support this past year. I wish you a very Happy New Year and much success in all your dreams and goals!

Tip#917: Connecting with Your Inner Child, Part 3 - Joy

“I believe the ordinary meets the extraordinary every single day.”
Joy (2015)

Whenever I receive an insight from a movie, I feel an emotional charge that moves me. It's like a little tap on my head, heart and gut to pay attention. That moment touches me deeply and I just know I’ve received an answer to solve a situation that I need to remember and focus on after the film is done. And thanks to the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) work I’ve been doing I’m much more conscious of movie messages that remind me to re-connect with my inner child and core beliefs. This helps me clear hidden blocks and increase my self-worth, confidence and overall mental health to achieve my dreams and goals (see: tip#910).

As I write this I am also thrilled to discover another film on Christmas Day about a female movie hero who reconnects with her inner child with inspiring results. It became an unexpected gift for getting me excited about achieving my goals in the coming new year!

Joy (2015)

The biographical, comedy-drama film, Joy, is about Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), a divorced mother who becomes a self-made millionaire from her inventions like the Miracle Mop. This fascinating and entertaining journey includes many great performances by Lawrence as well as Diane Ladd, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rosselini, Édgar Ramírez and Isabella Crovetti-Cramp as young Joy. See: movie trailer

This film is overflowing with inspirational insights for anyone who has a vision or dream they want to achieve. You'll see how Joy faces challenges with family, finances and business adversaries and yet demonstrates strong qualities such as perseverance, resilience, optimism, courage, vision and leadership. Ladd’s character as Mimi, Joy’s grandmother also shows how supportive relationships and positive encouragement was important to Joy’s enduring self-worth and self-confidence since childhood.

This movie is also a must-see for entrepreneurs and business owners. Cooper’s character Neil Walker, an executive at the home shopping network QVC, shares inspiring quotes and sales expertise every time he is on screen. And then there are the insights of “The Four Questions of Financial Worthiness” that Rossellini’s character Trudy asks Joy that are meaningful for a lasting, successful business.

As with most films inspired by true stories there are creative licenses taken in order to tell a compelling, cinematic story. There is one scene that really inspired me whether it was true or not. It’s a dream sequence where, after 17 years of hiding from her childhood dreams for inventing, Joy faces her child self who tells her to stop hiding. When she wakes up that is when Joy starts drawing her idea of the Miracle Mop.

Inspiring Themes:
• Having a Vision
• Believing
• Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem
• Passion & Perseverance
• Resilience
Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Sales & Marketing
• Entrepreneurial Spirit

Movies based on true stories often mix fact with fiction. However if the movie hero can inspire you to achieve your dreams and goals then you’ve received a special cinematic gift. The emotional charge you feel could be your answer on the next step to move forward. And if these films can also inspire you to connect with your inner child’s timeless passion, dreams and fearlessness then that is an even greater gift!

Tip#916: Movie Messages of Hope for The Holidays, Part 2 - Crown for Christmas

I am currently in my first week on my annual Las Vegas vacation and I was sick in bed for past 5 days. I knew I had been pushing myself for weeks and feel my body needed a lot of rest. I was rushing to get a holiday press release out (see tip#908), write my new eBook, Movie Messages of Hope for The Holidays (see tip#914), rebuilding my Motivatorman.com website, dealing with a swollen battery in my laptop, having a fractured tooth extracted (see tip#913), and then doing an interview at CBC Radio’s Fresh Air Show (see tip#914). It’s been a whirlwind so I welcomed the unexpected cold/flu symptoms to heal at my mom’s home!

What kept my spirits up was hearing my pre-recorded interview air on December 20th. What a wonderful feeling! It felt like an early Christmas gift and the capper for a life changing year where I finally received professional help for my diagnosis of chronic depression back in January 2015 (see tip#855). In the interview, with awesome guest host Sean Foley, I was able to share a sample of my journey with depression and the films that helped me persevere and develop indestructible optimism.

My intention was to help others who were listening that were facing holiday depression or winter blues. And the positive feedback and comments I immediately received via Facebook and email filled my heart with love and Christmas spirit! Listen to the CBC Radio interview: Fresh Air Show

Crown for Christmas (2015)

The romantic comedy, Crown for Christmas, is a Hallmark TV film about Allie Evans (Danica McKellar) a maid at a New York hotel who gets fired just before Christmas and is suddenly given a huge opportunity to be the governess to a young girl in Europe she later discovers is royalty. This charming, funny and heartwarming film has many great performances that include McKellar, Maximillian, King of Winshire (Rupert Penry-Jones) and Princess Theodora (Ellie Botterill). See: movie trailer

The story may be cheesy but it is good Christmas cheese! And though you may have seen similar films before this is still very entertaining thanks to a very charming cast. It celebrates keeping childlike fun alive as an adult, being true to yourself, love of family and finding romance, hope and magic at Christmas! Danica also shows great qualities in leadership, team spirit, resilience, perseverance and definitely indestructible optimism!

If you are feeling overwhelmed this holiday find an uplifting film to recharge your batteries and fill your heart with overflowing joy! Find movie messages to fill you with hope, joy and laughter. Wishing you and your family happy holidays and much love wherever you are!

Tip#915: The Power of Believing - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“I can do this!”
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Throughout my challenges of the past 15 years I’ve learned that the act of “believing” is a high factor in achieving goals, tasks and just getting through seemingly impossible situations. When the first Star Wars film came out in 1977 I was in high school and it fired up my imagination like no other movie before it. The movie heroes inspired me to believe in myself and believe I was capable of anything I wanted to do! It inspired me to develop my artistic abilities and began doing commercial illustration work as a teen.

I also resonated with the term The Force and the mystical idea behind it. I just liked the idea of an invisible energy that helped Luke Skywalker defeat the enemy just by clearing his mind, focusing and believing in The Force and in himself. However I also remember how Han Solo didn’t believe in it saying...

“I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls my destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.”

Solo wasn't a believer at first but throughout the original trilogy he soon became one. And there is so much I loved about the seventh chapter of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Solo not only expresses that he believed The Force and the Jedi were all true, he now handed that belief over to the next generation of young heroes!

"It's true. The Force, the Jedi. All of it. It's all true."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

The science fiction, adventure film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is the seventh installment of the main Star Wars film series and takes place 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This is a fantastic, thrilling chapter that captures some of the magic and wonder of the first 1977 film thanks to co-writer and director J.J. Abrams vision, new heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and the return of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). See: movie teaser
See: movie trailer

As I write this it's a day after my first screening of this film and I am still in awe. Nostalgic feelings overflowed when I saw iconic images, space ships and characters I grew up loving. The magnificent music of composer John Williams, both old and new themes, just moved me deeply! And I absolutely loved that the new central heroes were female and the other black.

Inspiring messages also came through that I resonated with on the theme of believing. There is a scene where Rey and Finn are desperate to escape the villains in the Millennium Falcon, Rey is in the pilot’s chair and Finn in the gun turret. They then each say out loud, “I can do this!”. That repetition was a reminder that no matter how overwhelming a challenge or problem seems I must always believe in myself and trust in the power of believing.

Inspiring Themes:
• Believing
• Resilience
• Leadership & Teamwork
• Synchronicity & Serendipity

Movie heroes can help you believe in yourself and in whatever you need to accomplish. They can also remind you to believe in a guiding force bigger then yourself! Believing gives you the energy, focus and confidence to face your problems head on. Be inspired by films you loved growing up and be open to all the exciting new movies that will come into your life to empower you!

Tip#914: Believe In Magic During The Holidays, Part 2 – CBC Radio’s Fresh Air Show - Christmas Eve

Despite the two challenges with my laptop and fractured tooth I wrote about in tip#913 I was simultaneously writing and completing a new eBook, rebuilding my website and doing an interview with CBC Radio’s Fresh Air Show. The common factor that kept me energized were the supportive relationships of the past two weeks AND a little bit of magic!

For the eBook I had an accountability coach from Unleashed Possibilities really pushed me to get this project done in time for the holidays. And when I got stuck trying to setup my website to sell the eBook I had tech people that helped me years ago I could contact for fast assistance. I also felt something divine guiding me! The eBook is called Movie Messages of Hope for The Holidays: 15 Films for Overcoming Depression & Difficult Times and now available for $2.99 via my new website: www.motivatorman.com

http://www.motivatorman.com/downloads/movie-messages-of-hope-for-the-holidays-ebook/
For the CBC Radio interview, that resulted from a fantastic, amazing chain reaction of new connections...

PART 1: First I had a goal and vision to let people know of how I could help them with my movie knowledge and lessons learned to overcome clinical depression. See tip#908 for my press release story
PART 2: Next I went to Linkedin and sent introductions to people involved in the mental health awareness community. The Executive Director of Healthy Minds Canada quickly accepted my LinkedIn invitation and offered me tickets to her upcoming 10 Anniversary Silver Dinner Event. See: tip#907
PART 3: At this event I saw Mary Ito, host of CBC Radio One’s Fresh Air Show who was the emcee and put her on top of my list of media to contact.
PART 4: Soon after I attended a Dinnerspirations networking event (see tip#902) where I met a radio show producer who immediately offered to help me when in my introduction to the group announced my goal for letting people know of my services.

Now let's pause for a moment. What would you say if I mentioned that of all the radio shows this producer could have worked on that it was the one on the top of my list?

Yes, I was stunned to find out she was the producer for CBC Radio One’s Fresh Air Show and that just made me believe in Christmas magic and miracles even more! She loved my story and even arranged to pre-record my segment because I would be out of town for my annual Las Vegas vacation. My 10 minute segment will air on Sunday, December 20th sometime between 7:30-9am EST. You can hear it live via the top right tab “Listen Live” at this link: Fresh Air Show

There’s even more magic that happened leading up to the actual interview date but I’ll leave that for another time! All I can say is that I truly believe in miracles and that holiday magic is definitely in the air!

With Fresh Air hosts Mary Ito and Sean Foley at CBC Radio One

Christmas Eve (2015)

The comedy drama, Christmas Eve, is about a power outage in New York City that traps six different groups of people inside elevators on Christmas Eve. Though total strangers they find unexpected joy, laughter, romance and holiday magic that gets them through their crisis. There are many wonderful performances that include Patrick Stewart, Jon Heder, Cheryl Hines, Gary Cole, Max Casella and Julianna Guill. See: movie trailer

This is another one of those stories that shows how a crisis can bring people together despite their differences and personalities. And the silver lining to being stuck is that some of these people are transformed in some meaningful way to look at life and work differently and joyfully.

Inspiring Themes:
• Indestructible Optimism
• Resilience
• Problem Solving
• Team Spirit
• Community
• Synchronicity & Serendipity

Whether you believe in holiday magic or not I hope you stay open to the synchronicity, serendipity and chance coincidences that could help you get unstuck in your life or work challenges. Be open to unexpected invitations and strangers that offer you wonderful opportunities and gifts. Most of all be open to the idea of magic this holiday season!
