Tip#1244: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 50 – You’ll Never Get Rich

This is Day 403 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

There is a powerful movie scene that really mirrors how films can save my life when I’m feeling lost and hopeless. It’s a scene in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters where his character, feeling suicidal, gravitates to a movie theatre where a black & white classic film is showing. There he is moved deeply by the silly fun, music and dancing happening on the screen and his dark mood is transformed into lightness with a renewed joy for living again.

See this scene: Hannah and Her Sisters

This joy from a cinematic experience is what continues to lift my spirit during the loneliness and isolation of the current lockdown in my city. Thankfully, I also feel a similar joy when I receive food gifts from friends like a second package of freshly baked goods I got in the mail from a favourite coffee shop! I even took a moment to soak up the visual excitement of the way these delicious cookies, scones and Canelés were lovingly wrapped for their safe delivery!

I blissfully enjoyed these scrumptious treats as I watched a classic black & white film that became my own experience of that scene in the Woody Allen movie. It was filled with silly fun, music and dancing that just transported me to happy world for awhile!

You’ll Never Get Rich (1941)

The musical comedy film, You’ll Never Get Rich, is about a theatre show manager Robert Curtis (Fred Astaire) asked to woo one of his dancers Sheila Winthrop (Rita Hayworth) by his womanizing boss, Martin Cortland (Robert Benchley). This highly entertaining comedy is filled with funny, screwball scenes and quirky performances along with many, wonderful song and dance numbers.

I was immediately struck by the chemistry between Astaire and Hayworth when they did their first dance scene together. And I was in awe of the final dance scene with the iconic image of them dancing on top of a massive tank/wedding cake! I also enjoyed the supporting character of fellow draftee Swivel Tongue (Cliff Nazarro) whom Robert meets while in the army. He does this hilarious language I read later was called “double talk” and was a popular fad during WW2. I also learned that the movie title stems from an old Army song which includes lyrics "You'll never get rich / by digging a ditch / you're in the Army now!"

It’s vintage trivia like these, along with this 40’s classic and Hollywood glamour, that did wonders for my mental health. It helped re-energize my spirit in a seemingly never-ending pandemic and relieved me of my anxiety, stress and uncertainty of life. It helped me focus on being grateful for all the positives and gifts I had right now!

Old, classic movies have the magical ability to transport us to simpler times. They can fill your senses with hilarious sights, joyful dance scenes and songs that can lift your sad heart to a place brimming with warm sunshine! Find a classic film today to bring you joyful hope and laughter now.

Tip#1243: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 49 – Tampopo

This is Day 396 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

I’ve been a little on edge because Toronto’s 30 day stay-at-home order was just extended for another two weeks with more restrictions on essential shopping and being in public. This pandemic continues to put pressure on my mental health but I am staying strong and resilient!

Part of my recipe for resilience is to focus on doing things I love. I have currently posted four of eight video clips from my Food & Mood presentation I gave on Zoom on my nutritional food journey and that has helped me focus on the positives in my life. And the thought that my food tips are helping others through social media is re-energizing to my spirit!

Thankfully, I have also seen a rise in followers on my primary Instagram account. They have mostly been other foodies from around the world like India, Asia and the UK which is exciting. It’s been thrilling to see delicious meals from different countries and how unique each dish looks.

All this must have inspired me to watch the very first foodie film I ever saw that introduced me to the blissful beauty of Ramen soup!

Tampopo (1985)

The comedy, drama film, Tampopo, is about a pair of truck drivers, Gorō (Tsutomu Yamazaki) and sidekick Gun (Ken Watanabe) helping Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), the widowed owner of a struggling, roadside ramen noodle shop. The story is intertwined with various vignettes about the relationship of love and food. Also starring Kōji Yakusho, Rikiya Yasuoka and Kinzō Sakura.

This is possibly the most epic foodie film because it covers so many sensual joys and erotic pleasures of eating! This movie captures so much of how food excites all our senses and, of course, there are countless scenes of delicious foods. I saw the digital restoration from the The Criterion Collection BluRay and it was stunning!

If you are a food lover and haven’t seen this then make this your number one movie to watch! It was made for foodies and also provides a multitude of life lessons and important success tips for entrepreneurs.

Tip#1242: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 48 – Housesitter

This is Day 389 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

This has been a challenging and depressing week. Right after Toronto went into lock down a new stay-at-home order was enforced for 30 days. That means people can only leave their homes for essentials like food and medical, work or exercise.

So I’ve been using this time to build my followers on Instagram and created a new channel specifically on my Movies for Motivation tips and my monthly High Notes Movie Club on Zoom.

• Please join my new Instagram channel: @moviesformotivation
• Join my main Instagram channel on Food & Mood: @motivatorman1

I also posted the first of an 8 part video presentation I gave on Food & Mood for the mental health organization, The Stability Network. Here I shared my experiences and food discoveries that helped improve my seasonal depression symptoms, cope with isolation and boosted my overall health and wellness. See: Food & Mood video Part 1

Focusing on all these creative endeavors was also a coping strategy for dealing with the stress and anxiety of this prolonged isolation. And I’ve also been watching favourite comedy films from my youth to lift me up and laugh!

Housesitter (1992)

The romantic comedy film, Housesitter, is about a waitress, Gwen (Goldie Hawn) with con-artist tendencies, who talks her way into the life and dream home of architect, Newton (Steve Martin) by claiming to be his wife to all his friends and family. This hilarious story also stars Dana Delany, Julie Harris, Donald Moffat and Peter MacNicol.
See: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

This movie was truly cinematic comfort food! The humour was also still fresh and the performances were delightfully fun and memorable. Hawn and Martin are fantastic together and that scene where his character is forced to sing Tura Lura Lura in order to make his father cry tears of joy was still priceless!

What I loved more than ever, that I only realized after years of personal development, is how this film was also an excellent example for creative visualization and law of attraction. The characters demonstrate how to change destructive, catastrophic thinking and use imagination to create a more positive future. Yes, the characters are lying but they are also being creative and choosing to tell stories/fables of what they need like getting job promotions or wanting a dream marriage. The fun is that it all manifests in the movie!

Be inspired to tell yourself a more positive story about the life you want when present situations appear hopeless. Find a favourite film to make you smile and help re-energize your imagination to visualize more exciting days, relationships or jobs. Let these films inspire amazing new possibilities for your future!

Tip#1241: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 47 – Bill & Ted Face the Music

This is Day 382 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

Since we've entered a second year of this global pandemic we also started another new month long lock down here in Toronto. So it continues to be a priority to maintain my positivity and mental health that is also affected by lingering winter depression symptoms. And it's another Easter weekend I am spending alone in two years. Thankfully I was able to see a few close friends and family to drop off some food gifts for Easter!

It really lifts my mood when eating delicious foods as well as sharing these taste delights with others! I’ve also received great joy in magical, synchronistic signs and messages that have come to me during lock down. These always arrive when I define and write down my goals or whenever I send out a prayer asking for help when I feel stuck in life.

The messages usually lead to me having to look at my past self to clear subconscious traumas/blocks in order to move towards the exciting future I desire. It’s about creating a better relationship with my child-self and learning how to improve self-love. Taking the time to love, acknowledge, forgive and thank my past self always seem to pave the way towards a brighter future!

I recently re-watched a film for a second time on Easter weekend that a friend recommended which I immediately predicted would have a divine message for me. I was so right!

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

The science fiction comedy film, Bill & Ted Face the Music, is the third film in the Bill & Ted film series. It’s about he ruler of the future telling Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeve), now middle aged, that they must compose a new song to save life as we know it. This fun, hilarious movie has lots of time travel adventures with returning cast members along with new ones that include: William Sadler (reprising his role as the Grim Reaper) and new cast members Kristen Schaal, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Anthony Carrigan, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, Holland Taylor, Kid Cudi, and Jillian Bell.

I was amazed how much I enjoyed this film second time around! There were so many hilarious, little  moments and overall the movie’s visual design is so vibrant. And what struck me the most were all the scenes of Bill and Ted interacting with their future selves at different future time periods. I was hearing their dialogue on a deeper level as I could feel double meanings occurring that were lessons for improving self-love and healing.

For example, the film has a very light, comedic, silly, fun tone until Bill and Ted meet old versions of themselves nearing the end of their lives. Their dialogue becomes very personal and moving and was filled with heart to heart sharing of gratitude, apologies and forgiveness. And when they each hug their future selves and express their love for each other it was so profound and beautiful.

There was so much more within this movie of other life lessons I need to be aware of so I plan to re-watch it for a third time. I highly recommend you seeing this film because, other than the inspirational value, we could all use a simple, lighthearted movie to get us through these challenging times!

There are many ways to elevate a positive mood for yourself during difficult times. Eating and sharing delicious foods can bring uplifting joy to your day. Believing in a little bit of magic also helps to receive unexpected gifts and answers from the universe. And also be open to finding answers in movies you are drawn to seeing. Believe in some cinematic magic to come to you today!
