Tip#1244: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 50 – You’ll Never Get Rich

This is Day 403 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

There is a powerful movie scene that really mirrors how films can save my life when I’m feeling lost and hopeless. It’s a scene in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters where his character, feeling suicidal, gravitates to a movie theatre where a black & white classic film is showing. There he is moved deeply by the silly fun, music and dancing happening on the screen and his dark mood is transformed into lightness with a renewed joy for living again.

This joy from a cinematic experience is what continues to lift my spirit during the loneliness and isolation of the current lockdown in my city. Thankfully, I also feel a similar joy when I receive food gifts from friends like a second package of freshly baked goods I got in the mail from a favourite coffee shop! I even took a moment to soak up the visual excitement of the way these delicious cookies, scones and Canelés were lovingly wrapped for their safe delivery!

I blissfully enjoyed these scrumptious treats as I watched a classic black & white film that became my own experience of that scene in the Woody Allen movie. It was filled with silly fun, music and dancing that just transported me to happy world for awhile!

You’ll Never Get Rich (1941)

The musical comedy film, You’ll Never Get Rich, is about a theatre show manager Robert Curtis (Fred Astaire) asked to woo one of his dancers Sheila Winthrop (Rita Hayworth) by his womanizing boss, Martin Cortland (Robert Benchley). This highly entertaining comedy is filled with funny, screwball scenes and quirky performances along with many, wonderful song and dance numbers.

I was immediately struck by the chemistry between Astaire and Hayworth when they did their first dance scene together. And I was in awe of the final dance scene with the iconic image of them dancing on top of a massive tank/wedding cake! I also enjoyed the supporting character of fellow draftee Swivel Tongue (Cliff Nazarro) whom Robert meets while in the army. He does this hilarious language I read later was called “double talk” and was a popular fad during WW2. I also learned that the movie title stems from an old Army song which includes lyrics "You'll never get rich / by digging a ditch / you're in the Army now!"

It’s vintage trivia like these, along with this 40’s classic and Hollywood glamour, that did wonders for my mental health. It helped re-energize my spirit in a seemingly never-ending pandemic and relieved me of my anxiety, stress and uncertainty of life. It helped me focus on being grateful for all the positives and gifts I had right now!

Old, classic movies have the magical ability to transport us to simpler times. They can fill your senses with hilarious sights, joyful dance scenes and songs that can lift your sad heart to a place brimming with warm sunshine! Find a classic film today to bring you joyful hope and laughter now.
