Tip#1148: Passion is Fuel, Part 6 - Stranger Than Fiction

Passion: A very powerful feeling about something such as love, hate, anger, or other emotion; A strong belief in something; Boundless enthusiasm

I just got back from a relaxing, fun and very empowering vacation just north of Toronto in Midland, Ontario. The country air, lush greenery, great food and great friends helped rejuvenate me after an active first five months of 2019. I also just completed a 16 week group therapy program that was extremely helpful in uncovering core blocks that caused years of clinical depression.

My vacation was actually intended to have me go offline and reflect on what I’d learned from the therapy program. I wanted to spend less time on technology like my iPhone and MacBook. However my passion for photography and documenting my life on Instagram overpowered my original intentions and led to an epiphany. That “aha” moment was that creative storytelling through social media was a core life purpose that I absolutely loved doing!

This “aha” moment has actually been percolating over recent years and these passion insights were mirrored to me while on vacation with my friend Gillienne Smith, Registered Massage Therapist. She has such a passion for her work that she was always vibrantly enthusiastic whenever she discussed the healing benefits of massage.

Her passion and positive energy reminded me of a 1 minute video I produced in 2008 called “How Passion Fuels Your Life, Career & Business”. In it I shared what I’d learned in life about how passion is fuel that ignites positive emotional energy that can lead to our confidence, enthusiasm, authentic connections and enjoyable careers.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

The fantasy comedy-drama film, Stranger Than Fiction is about Harold Crick (Will Ferrell), an IRS worker who begins hearing an author's voice (Emma Thompson) in his head narrating his life as it happens and that he will soon die. This entertaining film is filled with funny scenes, life lessons and a quirky, wonderfully unexpected romantic story. Also starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah.
Watch now: Amazon Prime

I remember when I first saw this and felt it was one of the greatest, uplifting films to help me through depression and burnout from my business as an illustrator. Watching Harold’s journey inspired me with his ability to face unexpected life changes with courage, confidence, perseverance, resilience and indestructible optimism.

The film also exemplifies the power of one’s passion as fuel for facing one’s challenges and fears. This leads Harold to finally exploring his buried desire and passion for wanting to play the guitar and breakout of living a life of solitude. Passion also helps him developing a loving relationship with baker, Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who shares her own inspiring story of how her passion for baking cookies and other treats led her to running her own bakery business. I highly recommend this movie that is filled with rich insights about living a passionate life and career!

Movies can have inspiring heroes that demonstrate the many benefits of identifying and embracing one’s passions.
