Tip#1259: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 65 – Super Me


This is Day 552 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada. 

I’ve noticed interesting synchronicities with Chinese themes ever since I saw the Shang-Chi movie on opening day two weeks ago. On one day I was feeling a little low a friend sent a link to a Qigong practice to help me cope. It reminded me I used to do these exercises daily many years ago to help me deal with depression. 

Qigong (qi gong, chi kung, chi 'ung, or chi gung) is a system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing and meditation used for the purposes of health, spirituality, and martial-arts training. It’s roots in ancient Chinese culture date back more than 4,000 years.

And at a Value Village thrift store I found an amazing vintage shirt with an ornate martial arts design on the back. It was a dragon with 5 Claws and it represents a symbol of power reserved for emperors in many Chinese dynasties. I like to think this shirt has magical, empowering qualities when I wear it! 

I was then recommended by a friend to see a wild Chinese fantasy film on Netflix. He mentioned some scenes related to food so I was immediately hooked! I soon discovered that the movie had a deeper, healing message for me. It also continued the themes I wrote about in my previous post on taking full responsibility for creating your reality. 

Super Me (2019) 

The fantasy drama comedy film, Super Me, is about Sang Yu (Darren Wang) a struggling screenwriter discovering he has a special power to bring antiques and other valuables from his dreams into reality. This entertaining and visually stunning movie also stars Song Jia, Bingkun Cao and Shih-Chieh King.

I watched this film twice because it had some weird moments and then the second viewing made more sense. The surreal dreams and scenes of becoming rich were fun while seeing Sang deal with depression and struggling to eat were heartfelt. There are also important life lessons about following your dream and the benefits and consequences of having instant success. 

What was fascinating are Freudian elements introduced in the story as deeper life lessons. In basic terms, Freud’s theory of the id, ego, and superego is that the id is our instincts, our basic desires. The ego is what stops us from going after our every whim and desire. The superego is the moral standard, criticism, or societal norms which we all follow. The movie hero faces all these aspects of himself and I found these themes a mirror for what I needed to balance or rebalance in my life. 

Synchronicities can be ways the universe is helping you keep your id, ego and superego in check. Movie heroes can also be mirrors for the decisions you make that create successes or consequences. Be a little more aware of the magical messages you receive today!
