Today is January 15th and it is Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. It is also an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. Synchronistically I just watched the film Hidden Figures and in time to write about it today! I was so inspired by this amazing true story and thrilled to know it is already being used as an important teaching tool for kids and families.
I recent saw on Twitter and Instagram that one of the actresses, Octavia Spencer, bought out a Hidden Figures screening for low-income families in Los Angeles. And then there was news that teens, teachers and community leaders in the U.S. were raising money for young girls to see the film. It excites and moves me deeply to hear about these wonderful people wanting to share the inspirational, teaching power of movies! I believe this passion for a film is what helps make our world a better place to live!

Hidden Figures (2016)
The biographical drama film, Hidden Figures, is about three brilliant African-American women working at NASA in the early 60’s and making positive changes in the workplace and for civil rights. Mathematician, Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Mathematician, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Engineer, Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) each have inspiring stories in this highly entertaining and moving film. See: movie trailer
There is so much I loved about this film and I’m eager to see it again! Each of the three heroes have compelling stories and I could imagine anyone of any colour, young and old, being inspired and motivated in some empowering way.
The prejudice and racism the women face in the workplace is terrible and yet they each stay strong and prove their value and unique talents and skill sets. And since this is based on a true story this film will be an amazing teaching tool for future generations in making viewers better people which could lead to creating a better world to live in.
