Tip#1021: Top Feel-Good Movies, Pt 5 – Singin’ in the Rain

I just saw La La Land for the second time and it was just as magical as I remembered it at TIFF 2016! Even more was the unexpected parts I got emotional about that really moved my heart to tears. It really is a powerful film with many life lessons I found thought provoking. It also just won all 7 Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture which was a record for any movie at these awards!

La La Land actor Ryan Gosling said something that attracted my attention after the unexpected passing of actress Debbie Reynolds recently…

“I wish I could have said this in person, but I’d like to thank Debbie Reynolds for her wonderful career of work. She was an inspiration to us every day — we watched Singin’ in the Rain every day for inspiration, [she was] a truly unparalleled talent. So, thank you to her for all of that inspiration.”

I remember when I was a kid watching movie tributes on TV with my Dad and how excited he was about the clip of Gene Kelly singing and dancing in the rain. That scene became iconic in my memories and for memories of my loving Dad. And yet I had never seen Singin’ in the Rain until Debbie Reynold’s passing and how it inspired the making of La La Land. So I finally watched it and witnessed it’s amazing feel good wonders!

Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

The musical comedy film, Singing in the Rain, is about the advent of “talkies” in Hollywood and the transition of silent stars Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly), Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds) and Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor). This legendary film is filled with memorable musical song and dance numbers and performances by the entire cast. See: movie trailer

I was blown away by the feel good energy I felt from this wonderful, captivating film! I was amazed at the dancing by Kelly, Reynolds and O’Connor in the songs, “Make ‘Em Laugh”, “You Were Meant for Me”, “Moses Supposes”, "Good Morning” and, of course, “Singin’ in the Rain”. Plus there is so much more to love about this film. I can see why my Dad and the filmmakers of La La Land loved this movie. It truly had an alluring fantasy world you could escape in and bath lovingly in all its Technicolor glory!

If you are looking for a feel good movie take a look beyond your favourites and discover classic Hollywood films. There is a reason they endure and inspire new films to become new classics that uplift your spirits and fill you with hope. Find a movie today that puts a huge smile on you and your day!
