Tip#1211: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 17 – Chadwick Boseman – 42 – Black Panther

This is Day 168 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

During this quarantine summer a very dear and close friend, Tammy Cunningham, has been fearlessly facing cancer. Her superhero level resilience has been so inspiring to me as well as to her many followers on social media. I was always amazed at how positive she sounded when we talked and she consistantly maintained the positive glow and optimism she’s always radiated!

Her positivity is due to her unshakeable focus and creative visualization she’s been sharing on Instagram and Facebook. Her resilience process is exactly what I wrote about in the previous post, Tip#1210 which was about picturing the future you want. Here’s an example of what she posts…

“This condition is an exercise in staying in the moment.
My mind is already on the prize.
I’m dreaming of swimming and hiking…”

Inspiring stories and people can also come from after someone loses their battle with cancer. I was in utter shock when actor Chadwick Boseman passed away on August 28, 2020 after being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. And yet, I realized he remained heroically focused and productive to complete these seven films over his final four years:

• Marshall (2017)
• Black Panther (2018)
• Avengers: Infinity Wars (2018)
• Avengers: Endgame (2019)
• 21 Bridges (2019)
• Da 5 Bloods (2020)
• Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)

As the news and social media overflowed with grief, love and tributes for Boseman’s unexpected passing, people were also discussing his immense output of work during his illness. And since this news adds to more inspiration for my own inner strengths I wanted to share two must-see films of Boseman’s characters that also demonstrated his shining strength of mind and heart.

 42 (2013)

The biographical sports film, 42, is about the racial integration of the first American professional baseball player Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) and Dodgers executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) who hired Robinson to help break the league's longstanding color barrier. This powerful film highlights many historical moments while showing how the passion for baseball can fuel a change in human history. Watch: movie trailer

Boseman as the legendary Robinson expressed the intense pain of racist attacks by the media, baseball crowds as well as fellow ball players. He also demonstrates incredible strengths in standing tall to break new ground in becoming a role model for tolerance, inclusion and love. And he was able to do this with the loving help of his wife, Ricky and eventually his whole team.

Black Panther (2018)

The superhero, action film, Black Panther, is about newly crowned T'Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) of the African nation, Wakanda and challenged by Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) to ignite a global revolution. This exciting and visually stunning chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe also stars a fantastic cast that includes Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.

This Oscar nominated film instantly became a pop culture and cultural phenomena with Black communities around the world celebrating a new world view of the movie. It was much more than a superhero story, it was about the loving support of family and community. And this film became a gift for inspiring a bright vision for young and old featuring empowering, cinematic role models.

Off screen Boseman also reached out and supported many children dealing with cancer while keeping his own diagnosis a secret. He was a living legacy and I highly recommend you read more about his life and see his films that always featured positive Black role models.

Be inspired by true stories of people courageously facing illnesses and hard times. And be inspired by films that feature cinematic role models to mirror your own inner strengths and resilience. They are there to give you hope and remind you that you are not alone.

Tip#1210: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 16 – The Secret: Dare to Dream

This is Day 161 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

I’ve been feeling better this past week after several weeks of having the quarantine blues and it’s thanks to bringing back my daily practice of the law of attraction. It reminded me of the self-help documentary The Secret that profoundly affected my life back in 2006. I found myself revisiting tips and methods that definitely help me in the past that included the fascinating reticular activating system (RAS). It’s a scientific explanation for how the law of attraction works and I featured this on my blog for the film, Focus starring Will Smith. See: Tip#831: Creative Visualization, Part 1 - Reticular Activating System (RAS) - Priming – Focus

By reprogramming my RAS, I was able to pull my mind and moods out of depressed states by first thinking and picturing a ‘big vision” of what I want for my life and work. I then wrote these visions as goals and affirmations as if they’ve already happened and repeated them several times a day e.g. I AM FEELING SO HEALTHY & STRONG

This was one of many affirmations but it led me to insights for finding simple recipes for eating more raw veggies and fruits, doing extra long walks and running on the spot exercises per day. That led to being more focused and feeling better a little more each day which then led to even more insights of how to strengthen my mind and positive thinking.

For example, I began watching more daily YouTube videos on the RAS and that led to more insights, clarity and self-confidence! And the beauty of YouTube is it remembers your topic preferences so it would give me more videos on the RAS each day! It’s a beautiful metaphor for how the RAS actually works.

During this time it was no coincidence that I saw a new Hollywood film on the law of attraction concepts from The Secret. So far I’ve watched it twice and knew that I was also programming my RAS for more good to come into my life! Here’s how…

The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020)

The drama, romance film, The Secret: Dare to Dream, is about Miranda Wells (Katie Holmes) and her three children meeting a mysterious man, Bray (Josh Lucas) who brings unexpected gifts that re-ignites the family’s spirits during hard times. This entertaining film is brimming with self-help insights while also featuring engaging and heartfelt performances by everyone including Jerry O'Connell, Celia Weston and the children Sarah Hoffmeister, Aidan Brennan and Chloe Lee.

Watch now: iTunes & Apple TV

What I loved about this film is that it introduced bite sized nuggets of wisdom about the law of attraction like in the wonderful “pizza wishing” scene! It also features examples of pessimistic thinking versus optimistic thinking that we can all relate to. And most of all it highlights many examples of wonders and miracles that I’ve already witnessed and experienced in my own times of hardship and depression. I highly recommend seeing this film especially if you are struggling in some part of your life.

Movies can affect people in so many different ways. And yet with a positive mindset going into a screening you can attract answers and insights from the story or characters to move you forward from challenges you are facing. Find a film today to watch and believe it will help you right now in raising your spirits, energy and hope!

Tip#1209: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 15 – Project Power – An American Pickle

This is Day 154 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

This week I continued to feel the quarantine blues with depression-like symptoms of sluggishness, some despair and some hopelessness. But I persevered with my practice of affirmations and prayers for guidance and it led to having two talks with friends from my past that helped re-energize my positivity!

They both reminded me that amazing things could happen if I just define and focus on a vision of what I want in my work and life. I was also reminded that the law of attraction would then reveal the next steps and the right people to make my visions come true. I then realized our conversations were proof that I had already manifested answers and immediately felt rejuvenated with hope and direction!

This manifesting continued with feeling compelled to watch two new movies that contained specific scenes that spoke directly to my heart. These scenes were like being recharged with life-affirming electricity from the universe!

Project Power (2020)

The superhero action film, Project Power, is about a teenage drug dealer Robin (Dominique Fishback), a police officer Frank (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and a former soldier Art (Jamie Foxx) who team up to stop the distribution of a pill that gives the user superpowers for five minutes. This movie is filled with exciting scenes and special effects showing a variety of powers being used for good and bad purposes.
Watch: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

Despite having elements already seen in the X-Men film series this movie features inspirational messages of finding your own special, unique power, talent and gift. Robin has a passion and gift for rap but lacks the confidence to perform in public. And through the help and encouragement of Art she demonstrates her talent which quickly builds her confidence and blows Art away with her natural skills that didn’t even require a magical pill.

An American Pickle (2020)

The comedy-drama film, An American Pickle, is about a 1919 Jewish immigrant, Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen) who gets preserved in a vat of pickles for 100 years and wakes up in modern-day New York City. He attempts to fit in with the help of his last remaining descendant, Ben (Seth Rogen). This entertaining movie explores inspiring themes on the love and support of family and keeping the memory of family ancestry alive.
Watch: movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

The double performance of Rogen and the interactions between his two characters is flawless and amazing to watch. And the scenes that spoke to me deeply were Herschel’s passion and perseverance to build a business of the one thing he knows best which is fermenting pickles. He shows how he is instantly resourceful despite the lack of money and how he overcomes failures and obstacles to achieve even more success.

If you are feeling the quarantine blues or any other kinds of low moods just remember that the right movie can help inspire you to persevere and stay positive. A film could have the perfect scene to give you hope and direction to move forward with confidence. They can remind you that people will be there to help once you open yourself up to that help. Find a film today to re-energize your hope and drive!

Tip#1208: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 14 – Back To School

This is Day 147 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

I’ve had the quarantine blues for several weeks now and yet I am grateful for remembering so many self-care remedies to keep me resilient. I continue to do daily therapy walks to get fresh air and sunshine and I’m enjoying my daily nutrient-dense diet like delicious raw, unpasteurized cheeses from France with medley coloured cherry tomatoes!

And sadly this weekend would have been Toronto’s annual Taste of the Danforth Festival but was cancelled due to COVID-19 quarantine. So I am extra grateful for my friend and violinist Yolanda Bruno for providing a free concert in Riverdale Park East with a quartet of colleagues from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The perfect sunny weather, fresh air, cool green grass and physically distanced audience made this a magical time with wonderful music to rejuvenate my spirits!

Violinist Yolanda Bruno with a quartet of colleagues from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra! At Riverdale Park East, Toronto, August 8, 2020.

I also rediscovered a comedy from the mid 80’s I hadn’t seen in years. In the past it would have been just a funny film but during my quarantine blues it became instant cinematic tonic that got the happy chemicals in my brain percolating and flowing!

Back To School (1986)

The comedy film, Back To School, is about a wealthy but uneducated father, Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) who goes to college to support his discouraged son Jason (Keith Gordon). There are many memorable and hilarious moments in this movie with great performances by the leads as well as Sally Kellerman, Burt Young, Terry Farrell, William Zabka, Ned Beatty, Sam Kinison, Paxton Whitehead and Robert Downey Jr.

Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

From the opening, playful music by Danny Elfman, I was transported to happy memories of the mid 80’s and had a good laugh throughout the film. With his fun cartoonish face, Dangerfield actually gave a heartwarming performance along with his biting, hilarious humour. I was also surprised to see a young Robert Downey Jr. since becoming famous for his Iron Man role. I was also surprised to see future Star Trek TV series stars Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax) and Robert Picardo (EMH Doctor). All in all just a great time!

Your recipe for resilience is about recognizing ingredients already in your life that are pleasurable activities you love and enjoy. These can be soaking up nature energy or savouring delicious, nutritious foods that make your taste buds sing! Or it could be uplifting music or movies that re-ignite your drive to keep moving forward. Find a joyful activity to indulge in today!

Tip#1207: The Recipe For Resilience, Perseverance & Indestructible Optimism, Part 13 – Hail the Conquering Hero – The Lady Eve

This is Day 140 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing here in Toronto, Canada.

It’s no secret that my passion for foods and films is what re-energizes and re-vitalizes my spirit anytime and anywhere! I recently enjoyed a day at St. Lawrence Market with a fellow foodie friend and lunched on their world famous Peameal Bacon on a Bun with five layers of bacon slathered in honey mustard. We also had another famous and enormous Veal Parmigiana with Eggplant sandwich called The Godfather.

We then indulged in other favourites like spinach pie pastries and fresh, crispy Portuguese custard tarts in Berczy Park with the famous dog fountain. My friend and I enthusiastically talked foods and films while soaking up the fresh air and summer sunshine. I was feeling so grateful for this chance to get out of isolation and hang out with a close buddy and share some delicious comfort foods for the soul.

These feel-good feelings reminded me of two classic oldie films I recently discovered that made me smile and laugh out loud. They both came out in the 1940’s and were fun and perfect movie medicine for the isolation of quarantine.

Hail the Conquering Hero (1941)

The satirical comedy, drama film, Hail the Conquering Hero, is about Woodrow Truesmith (Eddie Bracken), a discharged soldier, returning to his hometown and pretending to be a hero. He was encouraged by six Marines and led by Sergeant Heffelfinger (William Demarest). This entertaining, goofy and heartfelt story also stars Ella Raines, Georgia Caine, Raymond Walburn, Franklin Pangborn, Bill Edwards and Freddie Steele.
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

This film was written and directed by ‎Preston Sturges who also did the magnificent Sullivan’s Travels and features the same wonderful balance of silly fun and heart. The story shows how lies and misunderstandings can get out of hand in a massive, hilarious way while showing the courage it must take for the hero to do the right thing. The film is also a heartfelt dedication to loving mothers everywhere!

The Lady Eve (1941)

The screwball comedy film, The Lady Eve, is about a socially awkward and wealthy heir, Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) targeted by card sharks until one of them, Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) falls in love with him. This hilarious movie features many memorable pratfalls and performances by the cast that also includes Charles Coburn, Eugene Pallette and William Demarest.
Watch/Rent or Buy now: Amazon Prime Video

This film, also written and directed by ‎Preston Sturges, was so much fun and I laughed out loud at Charles’s “accidents” during the dinner party scene. And I was mesmerized by one of the sexiest/funny moments I’ve ever seen on screen between Charles and Jean in her cabin room aboard the cruise ship they meet on. Both Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda are truly delightful with an on-screen chemistry that made this movie one of my favourite new recent discoveries for feeling happy and re-energized!

Many old classic comedies were designed to lift the spirits of the audiences during challenging times of WWII. And they can now become resources for resilience in our current era. Add to that the important reminder to allow ourselves to indulge, in moderation, in our favourite foods as feel-good comfort foods. Find a food or film or even a friend to rejuvenate your positivity today!
