Tip#1101: Just Have Fun, Part 9 - Ant-Man and the Wasp

After a week of sweltering humid heat here in Toronto, a rainstorm came and the air cooled into a beautiful, clear, perfect Friday. It was also a difficult week both personally and work-related so the fresh air and bright blue skies prompted me to have fun, enjoy the day, take a long walk and soak up the sunshine and vitamin D!

Having fun is actually an important coping tool I learned from taking CBT, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, referred to as pleasurable activities. Making a list and engaging in enjoyable activities always helps ease and stop the ruminating of negative thoughts and feelings I experience with clinical depression. This is also connected to the law of attraction which I practice. Having fun builds positive emotional energy that can fuel  indestructible optimism, confidence and courage when facing of adversities in life.

All these practices lead to the increase of happy brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Movies help trigger these chemicals which is why films are my top favourite tools for my mental health and wellness. I am specifically grateful to the Marvel Cinematic Universe because, for many years, these films embody the essence of pure fun with the added bonus of providing massive amounts of inspiration and motivation!

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

The superhero action film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, is about Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne/Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and her father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) teaming up to rescue Pym’s wife Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) trapped in the Quantum Realm. This entertaining chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with exciting, inventive action scenes, hilarious characters and some emotional, heartfelt moments about love and family. With superpowers that can shrink people or cars and also make a person into a giant this movie is such a fun ride! The Wasp really kicks ass in this movie and also demonstrates a fearless attitude. She is also making history as the first female superhero to be in the title of a Marvel movie. The film also triggered my own childhood nostalgia with a pop song I loved as a kid by The Partridge Family and my love for Hot Wheels die-cast toy cars. I use to have a carrying case for my cars in the shape of a wheel and was thrilled to see it featured in the movie!

But it’s the pure fun that came from this movie that re-energized my spirit and got my happy brain chemicals flowing! I grew up liking Michelle Pfeiffer on screen and happy to see how radiant and gorgeous she still looked today. I also loved how they showed real-life microscopic creatures called Tardigrades when Pym entered the Quantum Realm. It’s a fascinating creature that demonstrates incredible resilience I featured in Tip#829.

Sometimes it's the little, joyful things in life that help increase our positive emotional energy during difficult times. Deciding to take a walk on a sunny, breezy day, revisit nostalgic memories or watching a favourite feel-good movie could be the perfect remedy to rejuvenate your spirit and fuel your indestructible optimism. Review your list of pleasurable activities and have some re-energizing fun today!
