Tip#984: Life Lessons in Your Favourite Movies, Part 5 - The Godfather

In my previous post I used the term “beautiful and brutal” and it can also be applied to one of my favourite movies, The Godfather. It is an epic, cinematic experience on so many levels and so beautiful to watch. And despite its brutal violence there are enduring life lessons to embrace about family, loyalty and not taking things personally.

The film has made a tremendous impact on cinema and on pop culture over the decades. It has also become a popular resource for teaching lessons on life, leadership and business. Just check out the many listings on Google:

The Godfather: Leadership Lessons

The Godfather (1972)

The crime film, The Godfather, chronicles the Corleone New York crime family from 1945 to 1955 first highlighting Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and then the transformation of Michael Corleone (Pacino) from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss. This incredible cinematic achievement is filled with iconic, memorable scenes, dialogue, music and performances by Brando, Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and the rest of the supporting cast. Whenever I see this film I always receive some sort of inspiring lesson or reminder of how to get unstuck in a life or work situation. It would show me actions to do and not to do. What resonated recently was the calm confidence that Tom Hagan (Robert Duvall) demonstrated when being yelled at by the film producer early in the film. He maintained a peaceful, articulate, professional attitude which Vito also demonstrates in the first part of the film and later by Michael as he begins to take leadership of the family business. As it is repeated throughout the film the lesson is to not take things personally and that it is only business.
