As of this writing I am almost completed my 15 week group program called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT (see tips #855, #863 and #867). It has been a profound experience as I’ve been receiving help identifying thoughts, emotions and behaviours that have perpetuated my clinical depression. One epiphany that came up has to do with an incident that occurred when I was 8 or 9 that created a negative core belief. This core belief could be the root of the cause of unwanted depression for so many years.
The opening scene of the film Trainwreck is a father making his two young daughters repeat the phrase “Monogamy isn’t realistic” over and over again. Though this is a humorous scene it is a prime example of a core belief being created and what follows are the results and consequences in adulthood both funny, heartfelt and heartbreaking. Trainwreck (2015)
The romantic comedy film, Trainwreck, is about the promiscuous life of Amy (Amy Schumer) and what happens when she meets successful sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader) and fall in love. This movie is an amazing balance of raunchy comedy, insights on relationships and a big heart! It is also filled with hilarious performances by the leads and basketball star LeBron James, Vanessa Bayer, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, John Cena and an unrecognizable Tilda Swinton! Plus many funny cameos! See: movie trailer
While I was viewing this film I felt I was watching an epic romantic comedy because of the number of layers of value it had for me. First I was entertained and laughed out loud so many times! Secondly the core belief created in Amy’s childhood leading to destructive thoughts and behaviours as an adult was a mirror for what I was learning about my own core beliefs. And thirdly I was inspired by this movie hero for how she had the courage to make drastic changes in her life and transform her attitude and beliefs to be with the person she loved deeply.
Movies can be entertaining as well as teach us how to live a more fuller life. They can also make us laugh and feel good when we’re dealing with troubling situations and relationships. Find movies with these qualities today and treat yourself to some laughter and learning!
