I’ve shared many times in my motivational talks that a primary key for helping me stay optimistic and confident during times of depression, financial crisis and burnout was to re-write the present adversities into the positive reality I desired. Re-writing, reprogramming and rebooting were all important terms for transforming my mindset to move forward from debilitating challenges.
I love the current cinematic examples of re-imagined characters and films that mirror the process of re-writing your life. At first I may have resisted the idea of re-imagined versions of Star Trek, James Bond and Batman films and yet once I surrendered to experiencing a new vision I soon changed my mind. I ended up loving actor Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond in Casino Royale and director Christopher Nolan’s vision of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I really had to let go of my previous mindset in order to have room to embrace something new and even more exciting!
Maleficent (2014)
The fantasy adventure film, Maleficent, is a live-action re-imaging of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty. The story shows Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) growing up as a good and powerful faerie and reveals the traumatic and sad reasons for becoming evil. Jolie gives a fantastic and heartfelt performance within a visually stunning and rich fantasy world. I was so fully immersed in this truly magical reality! See: movie trailer
I am still in awe of how it felt like I was in another world in this movie much like my experience in seeing Avatar. It’s as if the film screen enveloped all my senses and could almost taste and touch the breathtaking faerie world. I discovered after the screening that the first time director, Robert Stromberg won an Oscar for Best Art Direction on Avatar.
It was surreal watching this re-written vision of what I remember of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty so long ago. And I could really feel this was another cinematic message for letting go of my previous thoughts and being open to another perspective. And though this film features some disturbing scenes and acts of cruelty it is still filled with uplifting life lessons such as kindness towards differences, redemption and the power of true love.
