Tip#718: Stop Dreaming Start Living - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

It is early New Year’s morning (PST) as I write this and my Las Vegas/Santa Barbara holiday vacation slowly comes to an end. More than any other vacation I felt compelled to stay off social media and emailing so I can stay more in the moment of the relaxing, warm and rejuvenating environments I’ve been in.

And whenever I took photos during family gatherings I felt like an “observer” rather than a participant of the events and festivities unfolding. I felt out of the moment. Synchronistically, this was explored in a film released at Christmas whose tagline was “Stop Dreaming Start Living”. Dreaming is still important as long as it is balanced with action.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The adventure fantasy, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, is about Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) an employee at Life magazine who daydreams frequently of fantastical adventures. He daydreams of how he’d change his situations in life and at work like having a romantic relationship or dealing with a harsh boss. He must then do something extraordinary and travel around the world in search of photojournalist Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn). See: movie trailer

This magical and imaginatively filmed movie is overflowing with motivational messages about living life to the fullest. Almost every scene contains an inspiring statement either subliminal or obvious. And the message of really experiencing life rather than daydreaming or being an “observer” is delivered loud and clear. Being in the moment is a great message to start off the New Year. It is also the message of one of my all time favourite films, Peaceful Warrior (see tip#69).

With that in mind I will now go back to sleep after a late night of festivities here in Las Vegas. I am going back to being in the moment of vacationing bliss! I wish you a Happy 2014 and hope you live every moment to the fullest!

Happy New Year Mr Motivator Man!
I think we all could benefit from being "in the moment" more... especially these days when we are being bombarded with more information in a day than our great grandparents were their entire life. Social media and the need to share with others (for all different reasons)has taken precedence over experiencing the moment itself which I think is leaving us shallower. As a father of two, this holiday I primarily stayed off social media and focused on my family.

There is a great viral video circulating out there about a woman who forgets her smartphone for a day. Search "I forgot my iphone" and it will open your eyes to just how much we are missing by experiencing our lives through a 4" touch screen.
