Tip#56: The Missing 'Secret' To Attracting What You Want - The Secret - Antiviral

There are many methods and steps to attracting what you want in your life. As you discover these elements you will see that changing your old habits of thinking is essential.

The Secret (2007)

I still don’t know who sent me a free ticket to see Bob Proctorlive from The Secret movie but I know synchronicity and the law of attraction were completely at play. Proctor recently spoke at the University of Toronto and I knew it was a real gift just having been invited. After all, Proctor is a world-class speaker and now celebrity because of his appearance in The Secret.

Even my two amazed friends, who came with me as guests, were questioning me about how I got this invitation. I just explained that it was the law of attraction flowing for my wish to have a successful career. It is further proof that when you are passionate about your dreams you will draw in from the universe all the steps needed to reach your goals. And so money no longer becomes an issue if you are meant to be somewhere or do something.

Letting go of beliefs on money was one of the many themes Proctor covered in his presentation for the packed auditorium. He reminded us that we are always in control of money and not the other way around. That is just one habit of thinking some have allowed to have their decisions in life revolve around. For example, when you go shopping do you decide to buy something based on the price tag? Building awareness about our relationship with money and with ourselves is a big step towards improving financial situations.

Proctor then shared many personal stories helping to inspire the audience to see new possibilities of change for themselves. He told us tales of how the law of attraction guided him throughout his long and successful life and career. It led him to receiving the book Think and Grow Richand working with motivational legend, Earl Nightingale. And now that he was 73 years old, Proctor said he had no plans of slowing down. He was a real energetic dynamo on stage with a booming voice to boot!

The Missing Secret

Proctor also addressed the criticisms of the movie The Secret. He was direct to say that the movie doesn’t tell you all the steps of making the law of attraction work. It just tells you that it works. He shared what was missing and it had to do with the term 'paradigms'.

According to Proctor paradigms are what controls our lives. He defines paradigms as a multitude of habits. The key was to change these habits of belief one at a time to allow the flow of what we want to enter our lives. We can ultimately break down old paradigms holding us back through a desire to change, daily increases of awareness, time and patience. (For more see tips#38)

Free of Charge

It was also exciting to learn that Proctor is not an American as he lives here in Toronto. When he mentioned this you could tell many in the audience members swelled with pride that this international celebrity was literally a neighbour of ours. And he came across as a fellow human being who's found answers to life and enjoys sharing it with others. And, at least for that evening, the information was free of charge. He even offers his book, You Were Born Richas a free pdf on his website, www.bobproctor.com.

Antitrust (2001)

Acts of graciousness on a vast level reminds me of the final message in the thriller movie Antitrustwith Tim Robbins and Ryan Phillippe. The story involves Phillippe's character, a programmer who helps Robbins's company finish the code for the ultimate satellite uplink system that would allow Robbins to control the world's flow of information and communications.

Phillippe's character believed that all information should instead be made free to the world and in the end gives the technology away via a massive and dazzling global online broadcast. To some giving something away for free is unthinkable whereas to others this thinking is about making the world a better place. That kind of thinking can be very magnetic.

Synchronistic Encounters

Now back to something interesting that happened that evening with Bob Proctor. Just before the presentation was about to start, I had the sudden urge to go to the washroom. I didn't really have to go but something was telling me to 'Go now!' So I ran out, asked a door usher where the washrooms were and ran there and did my 'business'. On the way out I saw someone in the corner of my left eye standing by themselves. I turned and it was Proctor waiting to step on stage.

So I quickly turned towards him, gave him a big beaming smile and said, "Hello Bob!" as if we were old friends. He said hello as he shook my hand. As I introduced myself I could see a look in his eyes that was asking, "have I met this guy before?" Of course we haven't but I was fully enjoying this chance encounter.

I wished Bob a great presentation and ran back smiling at another unexpected and synchronistic meeting. And all I did was act on a gut instinct that told me I had to be somewhere and didn't question it. That is part of how the law of attraction works. Doubting and questioning gut impulses may be your current paradigm but that can all change if you're willing to work at it.

Always remember you have the power to manifest what you want. Stories like mine are meant to inspire the possibilities for you just like Proctor's own personal experiences. Continue to read and hear other people's synchronistic stories to spur you on and become more aware of what's holding you back.

Remember that your paradigms can be changed and you can do it a little bit each day. You can alter your ineffectual habits of thinking. You can change your programming. Having the desire to change is a powerful start towards controlling your life.

"Most people are just being extras in their own movie."
"Your results are an expression of your level of your awareness."
"Money has ears, if you call it, it will come."
Bob Proctor

Tip#55: Re-Energize in Your Favourite Coffee Shop

Le Gourmand

We all have our favourite coffee shops or spots to hang out at. Le Gourmand Grocer Café is mine and it's been there for me during difficult times in my life. Thankfully this café is close by to me in downtown Toronto and has been a special place for many years. It's a perfect spot to re-energize myself.

There have been countless times that this café's atmosphere has helped lift my spirits when I've felt lost during my mid-career transition. Le Gourmand gave me a place to look forward to during mornings I just wanted to stay in bed.

I remember rituals of getting up early to be at the café as soon as they opened at 7am. The morning sunlight would stream through the high windows adding to the already warm and cozy atmosphere. With classic jazz music playing in the air, the aroma of hot coffee and the sight of their fresh pastries was always a revitalizing start to my day.

Whenever I had illustration assignments I would bring my sketchbook, sit at my favourite table with their house blend in hand and let my pen fly across the page. Le Gourmand meant so much to me that when I was interviewed on Canadian Learning Television's 'Career Moves' program I insisted we film a segment at the café early in the morning. The producers liked the idea and they documented an important location that helped fuel my creativity.

A Second Home

I am also filled with memories of reading daily newspaper articles and several motivational books at Le Gourmand that would later help me rediscover my passions and life purpose. There were many times I'd write down wish lists for the life and career I wanted. The café was both a comfort in my soul searching and a chance to stay connected with others as I watched the neighborhood patrons come in and out. It felt like a second home.

Business colleagues playfully referred to Le Gourmand as our second office. I've had many meetings both business and personal where we'd share one of the café's humongous chocolate chip cookies they've become famous for. I've even had many synchronistic encounters when I least expected it. Some of these meetings have been major turning points that helped give me insights to catapult me forward in my new career as a motivational speaker.

And though I have yet to visit Europe, Le Gourmand's owner had brought the flavour and atmosphere of Europe to Toronto. As written in Toronto Life magazine, "So successfully has owner Milton Nunes captured the feel of a Parisian café, right down to the checkerboard tile, that it's too easy to spend hours people-watching and downing perfect café au lait."

When I've seen Milton over the years I've always given him a warm hello and big smile that secretly thanked him for bringing a slice of Europe here to my doorstep.

TV Cafés

Cafés are also celebrated in popular tv shows as central social destinations. Seinfeld had Monk's Café, Friends had Central Perk, Frasier had Café Nervosa and Smallville had The Talon coffee shop for a young Clark Kent to hang out at. These café's were not only social destinations but places where the characters meet new people, learned about themselves and each other over tasty cappuccinos, teas and pastries. It was their home away from home.

So what are your favourite coffee spots? Which ones warm your soul? Remembering these spots become even more important when you are going through difficult times because they can re-energize your spirit. See them as your emergency destinations when you are feeling lost or low self-esteem. Let them be your conscious source of refuge from the aches and pains of your job or relationships.

And you never know who you'll meet when you're there. Synchronicity has a way of arranging help to come visit you while you are casually sipping your favourite latte or beverage.

Whatever your favourite spots are, remember they have a deeper value and can be the best place on earth to re-connect with yourself. These special places are like a warm friend waiting to lift you up.

Tip#54: Recognize Your Secret Training - Cinderella Man - Groundhog Day

Spring is definitely in the air. I feel a sense of freedom with the warmer weather and longer days of sunlight. It feels renewing especially with the unexpected challenges I went through that made the winter seem extra long. Thankfully I have learned to recognize that blocks are a signpost that it's time to train for a necessary new life skill.

Cinderella Man (2005)

In the biographical sports drama film Cinderella Man,for example, Russell Crowe's character finds new strength from an unexpected personal injury. The movie is based on real life boxer James Braddock who injures his right hand thus losing his primary means of income. Though devastated he continues to support his family by working at the local docks unloading cargo. And because he can't use his right hand he is forced to use his left hand to do most of the work.

When Braddock is finally asked to box professionally again he had a secret weapon. After using his left arm day after day he had developed a powerful left hook. Returning to the boxing ring Braddock was even more powerful. His initial block was the catalyst for the secret training he received.

Groundhog Day (1993)

In the romantic comedy movie Groundhog Day,Bill Murray's character was stuck in a time loop repeating the same day over and over again. Though he is initially frustrated and depressed about this situation he eventually looks at the brighter side. He sees the benefits of being stuck and later uses it to improve himself to cultivate more meaningful relationships and develop his creative skills.

Apart from learning to play the piano beautifully, he teaches himself how to ice sculpt a large block of ice. He creates this magnificent figure with wings. I love this metaphor because he ultimately took control of his predicament and made something positive out of his block.

And yes it can be a challenge to switch onto a positive attitude. I've worked hard to stay aware that my blocks are a positive signal for learning another necessary skill. I may not like the situations at first but over the years I've realized I will not move forward with a negative attitude. I just trust there is a bigger picture that I cannot see yet.

Keep in mind you will always remain stuck and in victim mode if all you do is complain, worry or get stressed over the problem. Once you start focusing on the secret training that's being offered you will have a stronger sense of clarity to the bigger picture.

Look Carefully

So look carefully at the blocks you are facing. What is it that you need to do to overcome this challenge? What new skill are you being guided to learn? Perhaps you are finding it difficult looking for a job. Maybe you are in secret training to become more resourceful and find new areas to apply your core skills. Maybe you are being guided to develop your life skill for being more patient or being more aggressive.

Perhaps you are stuck in a loop where a relationship you are in has the same unpleasant dynamics of many others before. Maybe you are being asked to analyze the reoccurring patterns, training yourself to see the starting point of where you get caught in the relationship dramas. And when you've learned to develop new awareness skills you will spot the clues in new people you encounter and say, "No Thank You" and not get drawn into another dysfunctional relationship.

Wherever you feel you are blocked start looking at it as secret training. Remember that problems in life can be solved and the answers may not arrive in the way you expected. Trust that there's a purpose to your block and stay open to the answers and teachers that will arrive to accelerate you forward.

"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."

Tip#53: The Self-Confidence of Spider-Man - Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3just opened and broke all worldwide box office records for it's opening weekend sales. And if you've seen the first two films you will know the reasons are far beyond just a fantasy movie full of action and special effects. It's because these films are infused with relatable characters with every day human issues they must deal with. They all make choices that define who they are.

Just hours before I saw Spider-Man 3I happened to be reading this Shakespearequote:

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts...
"As You Like It"

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Playing many parts is one of the main themes in Spider-Man 3that's about revealing the hidden dark sides to our selves as well as the good in others who may appear bad. You see one villain called the Sandman whose motivation for crime is actually noble and not evil. He ultimately chooses to play the role of a bank robber.

Peter Parker (Spider-Man)unleashes a different side to himself that is highly aggressive and yet brimming with self-confidence. That's the reason why he has a new black version of the red and blue costume he wears. Extreme changes occur in his personality both in his real life and when he is Spider-Man. Without revealing why this happens it becomes an interesting metaphor for the beneficial sides to ourselves that can be coaxed out. There are hidden strengths buried deep within us all.

Parker demonstrates a more primal form of self-confidence that crosses the line into arrogance. Some of the scenes are humorous because the audience doesn't expect to see this audacious, testosterone filled side of a soft spoken, introverted character like Peter Parker. But when you really look you can see this powerful new side to Parker exposes a very self-assured capability.

Parker becomes more assertive and stands up for himself. He exerts more control over situations that are important to him. He is free from any doubt. We all have those qualities inside ourselves. We just need to learn how to unleash them and at the right times and without going overboard to being obnoxious.

Self-confidence and self-esteem issues were also explored in Spider-Man 2. In that film Parker was questioning his role as a superhero because he felt no one was appreciating that he was saving others. So when he began to lose his belief in himself he would lose his spider powers. He'd be swinging in mid-air, try to shoot out a web and nothing would come out. He'd come crashing back down to earth.

It was only when he chose to accept his hero role and his special gifts and skills did his powers come into full swing (pun intended!). Parker's self-esteem was recharged and self-confidence intact. He discovered that he did have great value and was appreciated for his good deeds.

So it all comes down to making choices. Choose to believe in your gifts and skills. Then choose to become a self-confident person. And if you haven't seen the Spider-Mantrilogy I recommend you start with the first film. You will be inspired by how Peter Parker grows in his self-confidence. And you'll also see how his courage and belief allows him to express himself to the girl he loves.

Choose the role you want to play in your life. Remember you are already the main character and the hero of your own action/adventure movie. Choose to be a self-confident one.

Tip#52: Shake Up Your Routine Day - Stranger Than Fiction

It's another sunny morning as I write this. I just got back from my routine of an early weekend morning grocery trip which I always enjoy. The air outside is always fresh and crisp at this time and it makes me glad that I am a morning person. Plus when I get to the store there are never long line ups!

On my way back from shopping I was on the bus listening to an old favourite song on my iPod. It’s called 'A Routine Day' by Klaatu. When Klaatu'sfirst album was released in 1976, everyone around the world thought it was the Beatles having reformed anonymously. Songs like 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft' and 'Sub-Rosa Subway' sounded very much like the Beatlesperforming. It was later revealed that Klaatuwere really three lads from a little town in Canada called Toronto. They really shook things up for awhile.

As I listened to the lyrics of 'A Routine Day' I remembered how it was about a man's routine day going to work and knowing he is trapped in a dead-end job. Despite it's catchy Beatlesque sound it documented the hum drum, uneventful days that millions of people go through. But I always liked that there was a brief sense of hope in the song. There's a moment in the lyrics that, to me, indicated he had an epiphany that could have changed his life. It made me think of one of my favourite movies.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

The romantic comedy drama fantasy Stranger Than Fictionstars Will Ferrell. The film starts off with a visually creative way to show how routine and obsessively precise his lonely character, Harold Crick, begins and ends his day. For example he is shown brushing his teeth with the exact number of brush strokes every single time.

Then something unexpected happens to shake up his everyday rituals and detours him onto a journey of change.

Crick decides to take a break from his routine days and begins to do things he's either always wanted to do or becomes open to new experiences. He takes in an afternoon movie, he explores his interest in playing guitar and he finally stops counting his brush strokes. He begins to see a world of fun and even finds love beyond his lonely and precise way of living. He just needed that unexpected kick in the ass to break out of his programmed existence.

So be open to unexpected detours in your routine day. Do your best to add something new to shake up your regular schedule. Order something new off the menu of your favourite restaurant. Take a different route to work. Add variety to your established preferences in life. It keeps things from getting boring. Variety is the spice of life that Harold Crick discovered.

And if you feel trapped like the character in Klaatu'ssong just remember that epiphanies for change can occur when you least expect. That sudden light bulb that turns on above your head will shed light on your options. Some call these 'aha' moments. When these happen act on it and shake up your routine day.

Who knows? Maybe I'll shake up my own routine and do my groceries during peak hours. Maybe waiting in a long line is a good thing once in awhile!

Tip#51: Follow Your Nose - Sliding Doors

After I posted my 50th motivational tip on Sunday morning I went to celebrate with a friend on a gloriously sunny spring day at the Queen's Quay here in Toronto. I could have worked indoors on other projects but I remembered how important it was to get out and celebrate achievements. Little did I know I would make a wild connection with someone.

The warm breezes, sparkling lake and great conversations cleared my head as we hung out by the lakeshore. It was like taking an instant vacation. The benefits of refreshing the mind and spirit like this always surprised me. My friend asked what I was going to do next now that I had the first 50 tips for my first self-help book. I replied that I wanted to find an expert in brand development and product marketing to work with. I just believed the steps towards finding this person would reveal itself in time.

After a couple of comfortably lazy hours my friend and I parted. I then felt compelled to drop by the Yoga Conference and Show at the Metro Convention Centre. The show was just wrapping up and it happened to be on my way home. Though logically it didn't make any sense to go and found myself pausing for a moment. I then decided to follow my nose and walked in that direction. I also had a free show pass so I had nothing to lose.

Synchronicity Sensors

I quickly roamed up and down all the aisles of the exhibitors with my "synchronicity sensors" on alert. I knew that I was drawn there for a reason. But nothing resonated for me so I made my way to the exit. As I came down the exit escalator someone at the bottom, who I noticed earlier, said hello to me with a big smile. It took me a few moments to recognize that it was a good soul who'd helped me with the production of my music cd, Rain of Angels over 7 years ago. I hadn't seen him since and it was a great surprise to reconnect.

He was surprised and excited to hear about my new motivational career and shared that he too went through a mid-career crisis and transition. So I asked him what he was doing now and he said he was a consultant. He provided brand marketing management and solutions.

My "synchronicity sensors" alarm went off! This is the stuff of movies making wild connections like this. Not only did he represent the next step of making my dream come true for publishing my book he was someone I knew and trusted from my past that also believed in me. This moment validated my gut feeling earlier to go to the Yoga Show.

Synchronistic moments happen all the times in movies. Meaningful coincidences can drive the plot forward no matter how strange the motivation for the characters. Meaningful connections are always made. Synchronistic meetings can happen when a character decides to turn right instead of left.

Sliding Doors (1998)

The romantic comedy drama Sliding Doorsstars Gwyneth Paltrow and explores the "what if's" of making those simple decisions in life. Paltrow's character decides to rush and catch a subway train which makes significant changes in her personal relationships. The film then splits onto a second story revealing another reality for having missed the subway. Both paths reveal the very different outcomes of an unexpected focal point in a person's day.

Movie classics like It's A Wonderful Lifeand other contemporary films like The Devil's Advocate, The Family Manand Clickalso explore 'what if' scenarios. Look carefully at the meaningful coincidences that happen in the movies you are watching. See how pivotal moments create a chain reaction of events for the characters. Then let them inspire you to become more alert in your daily events.

You are the star of your own movie in life so look at subtle signs and patterns that unfold during your day. Follow your nose when you smell a direction you are being drawn towards. Switch on your "synchronicity sensors" and let the plot of your life story unfold towards your goals.

Tip#50: See The Bigger Picture - Oprah & Ellen!

The Cake Message

When you see a delicious cake it's beauty can immediately permeate all your senses. Its textures look tantalizing, the aroma lifts your spirit and the moist taste can send you into the heavens. What is interesting is if you've never seen how a cake is made you would probably just see a strange mess. You have yet to see the bigger picture.

The eggs that were once perfectly contained in a white shell are suddenly cracked open spilling its contents. Then flour, once held in a tidy container, is dumped into the mix churning into the eggs and other ingredients. And if you ate these ingredients in their raw state it would taste terrible.

But in the end when every step has been carefully taken to create the cake, it transforms into a delicious work of art. This process is a metaphor for the bigger picture of what challenging times are for. Change for the better has its messy stages.

Go With The Natural Flow

2007 for me started off rough and has tested my belief in my vision for what I wanted in my career as a motivator. I've felt disconnected. What's been getting me through these several months was a newfound passion for documenting my struggles and learning on this blog. My first entry started 6 months ago where I celebrated a dream come true at the Royal Ontario Museum for a successful keynote topic I gave called 'How Movies Can Change Your Life'.

That event was to precede many other motivational events I was asked to develop for the ROM that ended up having the plug pulled in mid January (see tip#22). I thought I'd be documenting these new successes to inspire others to follow their dreams through my blog. Instead my new year was off to a crash bang start with my dream jobs getting derailed. My career eggs were being smashed open and flour was being spilled everywhere!

The irony is that my blog entries of motivational tips became my new focus and source of release and comfort. I truly enjoyed writing to share a little of the roller coaster I was riding and how I've managed to hang on. What surprised me most were the many encouraging thanks I would receive weekly. I was making a difference in other people's lives despite the dark time I was in.

And some of my readers were finding my motivational tips via the Google search engine. Comments came from as far as Portugal and Singapore. The universe was guiding me to a bigger purpose and I had to just trust the process I was in. I just needed to learn how to float like a cork and just go with the natural flow of events.

Passion Is Fuel

So I continued to document my struggles, synchronicities and solutions. That's all. I just followed my passion for writing. I had no idea where my income was going to come from but I knew I had to keep posting and share my experiences through the internet. Author of The Pursuit of Happynessand entrepreneur, Chris Gardner was key in confirming my gut feelings to keep doing what I love and not think about the money (see tip#40). Passion for writing was my new fuel and I couldn't wait to get up in the mornings to do it.

No matter what uncertainties I faced each day I continued to give as much as I could to help others stuck in their own lives. It's what I still love to do whether it's through my illustrations, music or a simple helpful tip for someone. I didn't expect anything in return, it was just unconditional giving. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “I was being the change I wanted to see in the world”.

As days and weeks went by comforting changes began to happen. New and good people brimming with integrity and graciousness flowed into my life. I still believed in earth angels and they were arriving from every direction. I was given so much encouragement to keep moving forward. Then at the end of March a special book came to me from out of the blue to re-ignite my deepest hopes and dreams.

What Dreams May Come

It was a profound gift to find film producer Stephen Simon's book, The Force Is With You.In it, Simon shared his own passion for movies and how they can help you discover who you are and why we are here. The book became a mirror for my dream of turning my motivational tips blog into a self-help book.

One of the many inspirational points from the book came from Simon's experiences producing the movies 'Somewhere In Time' with Christopher Reeve and What Dreams May Comewith Robin Williams. It took many long years to get each of the films made as there were constant roadblocks along the way. Simon's vision, passion and courage fueled his persistence and in the end the movies were finally produced. And despite not being box office hits upon release, in time the films have made a big difference for people all over the world having to deal with challenges of love and death.

Simon's personal stories and insights in his book had given me hope. I realized I'd been on track all along in my journey. Every choice I made was somehow always the right one. And I always learned something from each block I encountered to better myself and improve my life skills.

I was teaching myself how to go with the flow of the ups and down of life. And I had to always have faith that the puzzle pieces for moving forward would come at the right moment if I remained open to when and how they arrive. That's why I believe synchronicity is a powerful life tool to embrace. You just have to be alert and aware at all times for meaningful coincidences.

I see now my 'stuck' periods were not only cross roads but a 'dramatic pause' before my life and career truly revs up again for the next chapter of my adventures. I’ve chosen to be the hero of my own movie.

Keep A Vision Alive

What has further motivated me was this indelible image of myself being on the Oprah Show. I have always seen this clearly in my head. In fact to manifest this vision of the future I made a fun picture of pasting my face over a photo of a guest being interviewed on Oprah.

Try this for yourself. Why not picture yourself being interviewed by Oprah or someone else you admire. The idea of being interviewed is a form of celebrating and sharing with the world the greatness of who you are and what you are capable of. This is a great self-esteem exercise to get you thinking that your life experiences have some value.

For example, think of a challenge in your life or career that you have overcome. It may be a small thing to you but your methods of success could make a huge difference for someone else.

Ellen DeGeneres likes to also celebrate the everyday person. I've pictured myself on her show too. Although I initially see myself dancing like some of her guests do when they enter on stage. And I still think it was the coolest thing seeing Ellen make Steven Spielberg take a picture of her and Clint Eastwood at the 79th Academy Awards (see tip#33).

What inspires me most about Oprah and Ellen's shows is they both love celebrating the big and small accomplishments that people do. That, in turn, inspires others.

Your Place In The World

So keep your goals clear in your mind as you allow yourself to enjoy the journey there. Be a floating cork when times are tough. Take in the aroma and tastes of other people's cakes that are being created along the way. Take time to help someone whose cake may be burning or in trouble because one day you may be in the same situation.

And above all be grateful for what you have at this very moment. Make the most of what you have. Any missing ingredients to your cake will eventually come to you if you just trust and help others with their missing pieces. And somehow you'll begin to see the bigger picture and discover your lasting place in the world.

I know that my place in the world right now is to continue documenting my ups and downs with all my gifts and skills. And I'm meant to share it all with the world. I love knowing I’ve already made a difference in people's lives.

And what makes me smile at this moment is my vision of the future of you reading this in my first published book that's being given out free to audience members of the Oprah and Ellen shows. And I'm there laughing and looking back at when I wrote about this wild emotional roller coaster I was on.

And, of course, I'll be shaking my booty with Ellen on her show.
