Tip#1252: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 58 – The More the Merrier

This is Day 467 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

This long pandemic and lockdown has been a challenge in little, unexpected ways. Other than the isolation of living alone, non-essential stores closed and no dining in restaurants, my hair has grown much longer than I prefer! It blows in my face when winds while walking outdoors and I’m tired of cashiers at grocery stores saying, “Would you like a bag, ma’am?”

I wonder what future generations will think of this period looking back at our history of COVID-19. I think I got my answer when I saw a comedy film called The More the Merrier from the early 40’s. To my initial bewilderment, it’s opening scenes showed life in Washington D.C. where people were cramming into cabs, carpools and restaurants while hotels and homes were overflowing with people bedded next to each other.

I thought it was a fantasy or alternate universe story because the narrator talked as if this was normal life. I had to google the film and was astonished to learn that a housing issue actually happened because of World War II. The job market exploded and the number of civilians employed by the government quadrupled. The housing market in D.C. wasn’t equipped to deal with this sudden influx. Close to 20,000 people were even living in alleys! Read more: Standing Room Only: DC's WWII Housing Crunch

The More the Merrier (1943)

The comedy film, The More the Merrier, takes place during the housing shortage of World War II in Washington, D.C. and is about retired millionaire Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn) and Sergeant Joe Carter (Joel McCrea) sharing the single apartment of Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur).

It was great to see the always feisty Jean Arthur in a film I hadn’t seen before and was surprised by the quirky comedy and heartfelt romance in the story. It also gave me a glimpse into the daily life and rituals of the early 40’s like having a hardboiled egg each day for breakfast. I laughed at the running theme that there were eight women for each man in Washington D.C.. It was hilarious seeing women flock to single men or whistle cat calls at them when they walked by!

I also learned more about this housing crunch that occurred during WW II and made me ponder and compare it to our current COVID-19 era. If I had to choose, I prefer the isolation and lockdown versus the immense crowds and loss of privacy depicted in the film. I am so grateful for my home and strong health. Though I did like the idea of eight women per man since I happen to be single right now!

Movies that show different society and community challenges throughout the decades can be educational and enlightening. They can help you feel more grateful for what you have now despite any of your current adversities. Find a film today to inspire your gratitude and maybe even some laughter!

Tip#1251: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 57 – The Celestine Prophecy

This is Day 453 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

I've been working to solve a problem that’s long overdue. I am excited and a little frightened because it will mean a big career and lifestyle change. At the same time I also know that the right people and the right steps will synchronistically present themselves at the right time.

Back in 1994 I had a big life change when someone recommended I read the book The Celestine Prophecy. I didn’t know at the time but it was the beginning of a spiritual awakening for me that opened my eyes to many mind blowing ideas such as that people either give or steal energy (an energy that can be visible) from other people.

The book helped me deal with or eliminate many energy vampires in my life since then. The book also opened me up to the concept that there are no coincidences and that recognizing and acting on messages from people or synchronistic signs were part of the steps for achieving a goal or solving a problem. So it wasn't a coincidence that I was finally led to watching the film based on the book!

The Celestine Prophecy (2006)

The mystical adventure film, The Celestine Prophecy, is based on James Redfield's best-selling novel of the same name about school teacher, John Woodson, (Matthew Settle) who is led on a life changing journey to Peru to discover the mystery of 9 ancient scrolls rumoured to reveal the future of humanity. This thought provoking movie also stars John Thomas Kretschmann, Sarah Wayne Callies, Annabeth Gish, Héctor Elizondo, Joaquim de Almeida and Jürgen Prochnow.

Watching this film was a very emotional experience because it re-ignited memories of reading the book and how the insights profoundly helped me for over 25 years. Through the movie hero, I got to revisit the insights and also see many recognizable movie and TV actors play the characters that helped him on each step of his journey. It was a reminder that there are no coincidences in life and to believe and have faith that answers will arrive. But it was also a reminder that I needed to do better with the insights.

I was a massive fan of The Celestine Prophecy book and put into practice all the life lessons it outlined. Strangely, when the film was released in 2006 I didn’t feel compelled to watch it. I tried to watch it over the years but couldn’t because it simply didn’t feel right. I trusted my intuition, which was one of the 9 insights. And now I finally get to share my enthusiasm for this film and recommend that you see it too if you have an open mind for these powerful, metaphysical life lessons!

Movies with inspirational messages can come to you just when you need them the most. You just have to be open and alert for when they arrive. Messages can also come through synchronistic events and chance encounters to someone. All you have to do when this happens is trust your intuition and take action.

Your intuition is also referred to a gut feeling and the stomach is actually known as our second brain. So trust your gut today and allow the universe to give you the answers you’ve been looking for!

“I could describe these insights to you right now and you would hear my words but you have to do more than that. You have to experience it for yourself. The prophecies have to happen to you.”

Tip#1250: The Recipe For Resilience, Part 56 – History is Made at Night

This is Day 446 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.

When I started feeling some mild gum irritation in my mouth I started researching natural remedies and found myself absolutely fascinated with ancient Ayurvedic solutions. I didn’t expect to become so passionate about learning the health benefits of sesame oil and grinding whole cloves together and swishing for 20 min. per day! I even enjoyed researching and buying my first mortar and pestle.

See video that initiated my new oral health discoveries:
Heal Receding Gums and Grow Back | Treat Sensitive Teeth and Reverse Receding Gums | Gingivitis

Within a few days the gum irritation was gone and I will continue to see if this daily practice will heal some receding gum areas. I’ve also been adding organic turmeric powder, organic Ceylon cinnamon and organic Ashwagandha powder to my smoothies because of the anti-inflammatory qualities along with many more health benefits.

Ayurveda is a healthy-lifestyle system in India that has been used for more than 5,000 years. This made me feel confident and excited about using ancient solutions to increase my overall mental and physical health. I’ve actually known about Ayurveda for years but only now has it become important for helping me to stay strong and resilient in this pandemic era.

I'm so happy now that I had that gum irritation because my goal for solving it took me into this new world of self-care! These unexpected discoveries were mirrored in a film I recently saw from the 1930’s. Once I started watching the story it unfolded in unexpected, wonderful ways.

History is Made at Night (1937)

The romantic comedy-drama film, History is Made at Night, is about Irene Vail (Jean Arthur) being rescued from an abusive husband and wealthy ship owner Bruce Vail (Colin Clive) by Paul Dumond (Charles Boyer) a Head Waiter in Paris, France. This entertaining movie is a unique blend of genres and filled with memorable moments and performances.

It’s best that you don’t know any more details and for you to enjoy this unique cinematic experience like I did! All I knew was I loved the actress Jean Arthur from her classic Frank Capra films like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and wanted to see more of her movies. Just know that this film became a metaphor for my life’s journey of the unexpected turns and discoveries that unfold in amazing ways.

Sometimes when you focus on one path it can take you in other unexpected directions. These branches can also be full of learnings that can help you in multiple areas of your life and health. Be open today for whatever unfolds!
