Tip#842: Emotional Cinematic Moments, Part 1 - Paul Walker - Fast & Furious 7

The first time I saw Paul Walker in a film was for Pleasantville in 1998 at its Toronto International Film Festival premiere. In the scene he drove up in a car, looked over towards the camera and smiled. It would be eerie and sad that this would mirror his final screen moments at the end of Fast & Furious 7 in 2015. Walker unexpectedly passed away after a car crash on November 30, 2013.

I’ve been reading reviews and discussed the ending with friends who saw Furious 7 and it looks like we all were affected shedding a tear or two. It was heartwarming to know that fans and non-fans could be moved by a cinematic tribute to a film character and an actor no longer with us. It made me think of how emotional I felt seeing Robin Williams’s last scene in his last movie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. It was sad and yet I knew this was an emotional cinematic moment that was extra special just like Walker’s last scene.

Fast & Furious 7 (2015)

The action film, Fast & Furious 7 (also known as Furious 7) is the seventh installment of the series involving muscle cars, indestructible characters and physics-defying action. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and crew team up with covert ops team leader Frank Petty (Kurt Russell) to defeat new adversary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). What unfolds is another thrill ride with even more over-the-top action sequences such as parachuting cars from a plane and jumping a car from one Abu Dhabi tower to another. See: movie trailer

The theme of family is again important and more so throughout Walker’s last film. Part of my extra fascination with this movie is that Walker did not complete filming his scenes so they were finished with a combination of using old footage from other chapters, Paul’s brothers Caleb and Cody standing in and the re-creating Walker’s face and body through CGI. I really need to see the film again to identify all the new footage so overall the filmmakers did a really good job.

In the end the emotional impact of Walker's final scene touched audiences all over the world. And it demonstrates the power of heartfelt cinematic moments to remember.

Tip#841: God in Movies, Part 2 – The Ten Commandments

“If this god is God, he would live on every mountain, in every valley. He would not be only the god of Ishmael or Israel alone, but of all men. It is said he created all men in his image. He would dwell in every heart, in every mind, in every soul.”
The Ten Commandments (1956)

On Good Friday I wasn’t feeling well and felt guided to view a gorgeous Blu-ray of The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston. It was amazing to see such crisp colours and details in the costumes and settings despite having seen the film countless times at Easter. The powerful music, soulful messages and nostalgic memories of watching this growing up with family lifted my spirits back up.

The Ten Commandments (1956)

The religious epic film, The Ten Commandments, is the biblical story of the life of Moses (Charlton Heston) and his mission to free the slaves of Israel. His life as a Prince of Egypt, Hebrew slave, shepherd in Midian and messenger of God takes you on a fantastic journey filled with spectacle, stirring music, compelling characters, beautiful costumes and scenery.
See: Blu-ray movie trailer
Watch/Rent or Buy: Amazon Prime

Movie Trivia from IMDB:
• Charlton Heston personally requested to Cecil B. DeMille to let him be the voice of God, at the scene of the Burning Bush, and DeMille agreed
• Charlton Heston's newborn son Fraser Clarke Heston appeared as the infant Moses

Like all favourite movies that I see at different times of my life I always get a different life lesson that speaks deeply to me. This time I noticed the excellent leadership skills Moses had in every aspect of his life especially as a Prince of Egypt and a prophet. I could also identify with his surrendering of his life to a higher power and his higher purpose. And once God spoke to Moses I was inspired by how he maintained unwavering focus on the mission and goal assigned to him.

Though I am not a religious man I am very spiritual and have made God a partner on my journey. I also thank him every single day for what I have in my life. And I am maintaining my own focus, indestructible optimism, resilience and faith that the adversities I face in life, my health and work all have a higher purpose. Seeing Moses again as another cinematic role model has empowered me to keep moving forward no matter what.

I wish you the same richness for inner strength and spirit on this Easter weekend! Identify and recognize your own cinematic role models that will empower you during dark times and lead you back into the light! Happy Easter!

Tip#839: Activate The Power of Your Mind, Part 3 - Trapped Emotions - Pleasantville

Ever since I saw the E-motion documentary (see tip#836) I have been feeling excited about finally solving my mental health and physical health issues. And I want to document what I'm learning on this blog in case you resonate with the resources, tools and methods that work for me. You can see the first 25 minutes of E-motion now: click here

One of people featured in E-motion that resonated with me deeply was Dr. Bradley Nelson where he talked about how trapped emotions in our bodies are the root cause for physical symptoms and diseases. He also talked about the Heart-Wall that is an energy field around one’s heart that contains unresolved or painful emotions from the past. I was so drawn to learning more that I found a one-hour video presentation of Dr. Nelson explaining more about his Emotion Code and the Heart-Wall. He also shares the science behind the energy frequencies generated by the heart. See: Everything You Need to Know About the Heart-Wall

That video inspired me to read Dr. Nelson’s best selling book The Emotion Code and was deeply moved by his generosity in offering it free as a PDF and audiobook (click here). This alternative healing information may seem like fantasy to some people but I believe in this. Through his studies of ancient medical practice and modern quantum physics, Dr. Nelson developed The Emotion Code to help clear negative energy that become trapped in the body during intense emotional events.

I felt my mind was being activated with excitement over what I was learning. In fact all this information was reminding me of one of my favourite movies and I watched it again recently and had a new AHA moment that it was all about trapped emotions!

Pleasantville (1998)

The fantasy comedy-drama film, Pleasantville, is about what happens when two modern day teenage siblings David/Bud (Tobey Maguire) and Jennifer/Mary Sue (Reese Witherspoon) are magically transported into a black & white 50’s sitcom called Pleasantville. What unravels is a visually stunning transformation of characters and settings into a world of colour. See: movie trailer

This amazing movie has so many layers of social commentary and life lessons that it's on my top 5 favourite movies of all time. And yet after seeing the E-motion movie and reading the Emotion Code book did I fully recognize that trapped emotions was a core message of Pleasantville. When the black & white characters release a hidden or stuck emotion they turn to full colour! This includes the modern day siblings. The message is that releasing trapped emotions can lead to a whole new world of wonders AND a more enjoyable quality of living!

Activate the power of your mind to find the answers and resources you seek in life. There are many different roads towards healing and recovery. Choose the path that you resonate with even if others do not believe in it. And be inspired by movies that can show you how to free yourself of the trapped emotions holding you back!

Tip#838: The Power of Acknowledgement, Part 2 – Mental Health in the Workplace - What Women Want

I recently attended the memorial for an old friend and colleague where I reconnected with other people I hadn’t seen in years. One friend was from high school and when I opened up about my recent challenges with depression he felt at ease to share his own experiences. We both really appreciated that we could acknowledge one another’s mental health struggles in a compassionate way.

Thankfully attitudes in the workplace have been increasing to focus more on mental health awareness. Online articles, surveys and even social media like Twitter are regularly posting stats of how mental health is costing businesses billions per year. Here’s a Twitter example from Mood Disorders Society of Canada: Did u know that #mentalillness in the workplace costs #businesses over $20 billion per year? http://goo.gl/XpwBTI

Anthony Folan, President of Integral HR Solutions Inc. recently published a short yet effective article on LinkedIn that says, “From an awareness standpoint, organizations must realize that they have a duty to accommodate employees that are suffering from mental illness.” See article: Mental Health in the Workplace

Acknowledgement is an important step for both employees and employers for understanding and recognizing mental health on a personal level AND that it ultimately builds supportive team spirit in the workplace. Examples of this can even be seen in the movies.

What Women Want (2000)

The romantic comedy film, What Women Want, is about what happens when a chauvinistic advertising executive/alpha male accidentally acquires the gift of hearing women’s thoughts. Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) at first uses this new ability for selfish reasons but soon develops a more compassionate attitude and a team spirit focus. There are many hilarious scenes and also brilliant results like the effective Nike ad campaign Nick brainstorms with newly appointed executive Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt). See: movie trailer

A key sub-plot that demonstrates the power of acknowledgement with mental health involves an introverted, unhappy file assistant (Judy Greer) who Nick previously ignores at work. But as he finally looks at her and hears her thoughts she reveals her depression and thoughts of death. Nick’s new skills of observation, understanding and compassion leads him to helping her feel acknowledged and more enthusiastic in their workplace.

Films can be fantastic tools for creative visualization when it comes to showing examples of how movie characters develop their awareness for the well being of people around them. Be inspired to develop your own abilities to acknowledge others more effectively in the workplace and in life. Acknowledgement can empower individuals and lead to a stronger work environment!
