Tip#634: You Gotta Get Up – Ben Affleck’s Career Resurrection - Argo

“It doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life because that’s gonna happen. All that matters is that you gotta get up.”
Ben Affleck, acceptance speech for Argo’s Best Picture Oscar

Ben Affleck is a success story for career resurrection. 15 years ago he won an Oscar for the screenplay for Good Will Hunting co-written with his friend Matt Damon. And then after appearing in lead roles in popular hits such as Armageddon and Pearl Harbor he ended up caught in a global media frenzy with his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. Their box-office bomb Gigli and other incidents would also produce negative press and public opinion about Affleck. However he would persevere, pick himself up and re-invent himself as a top Hollywood director.

Argo (2012)

The dramatic thriller Argo is based on the true story of CIA operative Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) who led the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Mendez’s solution came with the help from Hollywood in which a fake movie called Argo was developed to give the hostages a cover story as film-makers scouting locations in Iran.

This film inspires on many levels for staying positive when faced with impossible situations. And since Affleck was also director, co-producer and star of the Oscar winning movie it now serves as evidence that career resurrection is possible. Just like his character Mendez, Affleck demonstrated indestructible optimism in a situation that appeared hopeless.

If you are going through career challenges or a hopeless situation be inspired to know that when you feel knocked down do your best to get back up. You get to choose your attitude so choose to be positive and proactive. There are many examples of people all around you that have risen to the challenge. Become one of them today!

Tip#633: What Does Successful Mean to You? - Prometheus

“I want to do projects that last longer than an opening weekend… I want to make things that people remember.” George Clooney

It is interesting to see that the business side of Hollywood judges the success of a film based on opening weekend sales. It makes sense that a movie made for millions of dollars are expected to make its money back and more but I personally see films as successful if they can be entertaining AND inspiring over years of repeat viewings.

One of the highest grossing films of 2012 was The Avengers bringing in $1.2 billion worldwide and yet was not nominated for Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards. Then there are lower grossing films predicted to win Best Picture such as Lincoln ($235 million) and Argo ($204 million). So in the end what is the definition of a successful movie to you?

Here’s one example of a film I’ve enjoyed many times despite problems I had with the script, certain characters and an unsatisfying ending…

Prometheus (2012)

The science fiction film Prometheus is director Ridley Scott’s prequel to the events that occurred in his highly successful 1979 film Alien. The story is set in the late 21st Century where the crew of the spaceship Prometheus travels to a distant planet to discover the originals of humanity. Once there they encounter deadly aliens that first infiltrate a human host and gestate within.

Why do I classify this film as successful if I had problems with the script, characters and an unsatisfying ending? It is simply because I loved the visual texture of the film and the stunning scenes filled with cool technologies and spaceships. It stimulates my imagination every time I see this movie. It may not have come close to being nominated for Best Picture but in my mind it is a winner for the entertainment value.

In 2012 there were several box-office bombs that I thoroughly enjoyed and have already seen many times such as Big Miracle, John Carter, Cloud Atlas and Rise of the Guardians. And despite it’s classification as failures and the overwhelming negative reviews I still define these films as a success because they are entertaining AND helped motivate me to make my life better in some way.

It comes down to personal taste and an emotional connection that can define the success of a film. Let your own heart and mind decide what success is for you whether it be a film or something in your life and career. Feel what success means to you and celebrate that feeling today!

Tip#632: Be Inspired by Down-To-Earth Superstars - Beyoncé: Life Is But a Dream

Sometimes it is hard to feel we can attain big dreams because when we see superstars like successful actors, musicians or athletes they seem beyond human. Sometimes these celebrities project such a fantastic image that it seems unreal or not attainable in your own life. And yet they are human. And if you can change your mindset they can inspire you to envision an exciting life and career for yourself!

Beyoncé: Life Is But a Dream (2013)

The HBO documentary Beyoncé: Life Is But a Dream is a look into the personal life and music of singer Beyoncé Knowles. This film features exciting concert footage as well as very personal videos she took during difficult times such as a miscarriage and hiding her pregnancy from the public. Beyoncé reveals a very down-to-earth human side to herself throughout the documentary. See: movie trailer

Beyoncé shows a very strong, resilient personality as she learned how to stand her ground for her artistry and career decisions with her father and other people around her. Her famous husband Jay-Z also feels so down-to-earth as home videos show them dressed down together and expressing a very loving relationship. Beyoncé also shares many inspiring and empowering quotes in the film such as:

“Stop pretending I have it all together. And if I’m scared, be scared, allow it, release it, move on.”

“In my hardest moments when I thought what am I doing? I’m not strong enough for this, I can’t get through this, I’m not ready, I just have to say… jump. Because I know I’m going to land in that water and swim back on the boat.”

“I believe everything in our life, every person in our life, every relationship, everything is there for a reason. And when you really pay attention they’re certain little clues we get, it’s so crystal clear what the next step is.”

“It’s just this puzzle and everything is in its right place. And as we grow we take the next step the dots get connected and we eventually become what we’re suppose to be.”

Tip#631: The Uplifting Power of Nostalgia, Part 1 - Paul Williams Still Alive

Nostalgia: A sentimental longing for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

I always receive great comfort from listening to my favourite music from the 70’s like the Electric Light Orchestra. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of simpler times in my childhood and is also my “sonic tonic” for making me feel good when I need it. Listening to music we grew up with can activate nostalgic feelings and lift us up.

There is a movie that has finally been released that I originally saw two years ago at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival that demonstrates the power of nostalgia. I wanted to write about this amazing documentary back then but readers would not have been able to see. Now you can!

Paul Williams Still Alive (2011)

The documentary Paul Williams Still Alive is about legendary songwriter and 70’s icon Paul Williams as well as the nostalgia of the 70’s. Writer and director Stephen Kessler actually becomes part of this story after he discovers Williams is still alive and still performing his popular songs like “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie and Oscar winning “Evergreen” from A Star is Born. And there were other songs made famous by Helen Reddy, David Bowie and The Carpenters. See: movie trailer

I felt a surge of nostalgia fill my spirit as I watched this documentary overflowing with images and songs I remembered watching on TV as a child. Williams was also an actor and frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and many other talks shows and game shows. I wasn’t a fan of Williams back then and yet I’ve now discovered him as the creator of such great and lasting music. The documentary also inspires because Williams showed resilience and perseverance during difficult times.

If you have a favourite song list full of music from times you grew up with then see it as your personal re-energizing resource. See it as a sonic tonic that will activate nostalgic feelings and will lift your spirits when you need it. And celebrate the people responsible for creating music that is meaningful to you today! They have actually contributed to your well-being time and time again!

Tip#630: Learning to Love Yourself – Angel-A

With Valentine’s Day arriving tomorrow I wanted to share something very personal and appropriate that may be what you need to hear right now. For over a year and through the weekly guidance of my business coach and wellness coach I have been in a Life Detox program that includes the development of:

• Neural Reconditioning
• Creative Visualization
• Law of Attraction
• Quantum Physics
• Wellness Therapy
• Relationship with God (higher power)

My profound discovery is that all these diverse studies led to one key factor: Loving Yourself. As I learned to love myself more my life began to alter in miraculous ways. I was feeling more deserving and worthy of what I wanted in life that were not previously manifesting. This is how I met a key person who gave me a ticket to the world premiere I really wanted to attend of Cloud Atlas back in September 2012 (see tip#578). And it’s how I synchronistically connected with loving people who quickly helped me publish my first book in December 2012 after 5 years of struggle with the book (see tip#610).

There are many more inspiring examples I have documented with my coaches and will share more on this blog and my speaker presentations. For now I wanted to share the most amazing and moving scene in a film that demonstrates the key importance of self-love.

Angel-A (2005)

The French fantasy and romantic drama Angel-A is about Andre (Jamel Debbouze) who just returned to Paris hoping to change his life and stop his petty crimes. He soon meets a beautiful and mysterious woman named Angela (Rie Rasmussen) who pledges her life to do everything she can to help him. To his surprise she helps him in the most unexpected and meaningful way.

Without explaining anymore I highly recommend you see this clip from the movie. If you are moved by it then identify what the scene is saying to you. What thoughts or feelings come up for you? Is this scene mirroring something for you?

Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” And he is right. If you want your external world to improve then your relationship with your inner world is where your focus is needed. Learning to love yourself more will be a new journey for you that will take time and courage. Just know that there will be loving, supportive people AND inspiring movies there to help along the way!

Tip#629: Affirmations & Personal Development in the Movies – How Do You Know

I just had a massive realization that inspired me to the core of my soul! I recently went to visit my business coach and friend Patrick Bizindavyi at his home and remembered just under two years ago seeing affirmations taped to his walls of what he wanted to manifest. He was single at the time and one of his dreams was to have a family. Well now I sat there in the same home and he had a beautiful baby girl in his arms and a loving wife in the next room!

I was in joyful awe as I made his 7 month old daughter laugh with my baby voices! This was just another amazing reminder that affirmations do work and that along with having unshakeable faith any dream or goal will eventually come true. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself every day with positive statements.

How Do You Know (2010)

The romantic comedy How Do You Know is about a love triangle of characters that help each other through difficult times. Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) is a popular softball player suddenly cut from the Team USA roster while George (Paul Rudd) is an executive targeted in a federal criminal investigation. Throughout the film these characters demonstrate personal development methods and tips which is why I enjoy this film so much. And they are all very self-aware.

There is a scene where Lisa is getting emotional over being cut from the team and she is in front of her bathroom mirror. It is covered with motivational affirmations and you soon see that she is already a resilient person. The dialogue throughout is also filled with statements that can be used as affirmations and motivational quotes. For example…

“Don’t judge anybody else until you check yourself out. That way you’re lucky if it’s your fault because then you can correct the situation.”

“Never drink to feel better. Only drink to feel even better.”

“Courage is mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

“Obstacles are what you see when you lose sight of your goal.”

“Figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it.”

“Don’t do anything half way unless you’re willing to be half happy.”

“Picture a very angry ocean, a storm and I’m on this little, tiny boat and miraculously this boat is still afloat.”

“You sure haven’t let anything take your spirit.”

“I don’t know that I’ll do great but I know I can do better!”

“I think the answer to what you’re talking about is to stop talking. Deny a voice to the thing that’s falling apart.”

“When you’re in something you’ve gotta give it everything you have or else what are you doing?”

“We are all just one small adjustment away from making our lives work.”

Daily affirmations are key to moving you forward from challenging times. It helps transform a negative mindset into a proactive mindset. Your personal growth depends on how often you focus on the positive thoughts and statements of what you want to manifest or achieve in your life. Do this right now! Surround yourself with positive affirmations today!

Tip#628: Identify Your Multiple Talents - Magic Mike

I am always amazed when I see an actor reveal an unexpected talent of theirs like Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman sing and dance while hosting the 81st Academy Awards. And there’s Gwyneth Paltrow showing off her sultry singing voice in the film Duets. I was also wowed by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect when she performed the “cup song” (you just have to see it!).

The list goes on and on (hello Anne Hathaway). And I guess I am man enough to admit that my latest discovery was seeing actor Channing Tatum shake his butt real good in Magic Mike! See: movie trailer

Magic Mike (2012)

The comedy-drama Magic Mike is about Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) who introduces nineteen-year-old Adam (Alex Pettyfer) to his world of male stripping in Tampa Florida. Adam learns he has this unexpected gift for dancing and stripping and quickly joins Mike at the Xquisite Strip Club owned by Dallas (Matthew McConaughey). The story and characters were all fun and engaging and the dancing was great, especially Tatum.

The film is loosely based on the experiences of Tatum, who was an eighteen-year-old stripper before he made it big as a Hollywood actor. I first saw him in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and then was amazed at his comedic abilities in the reboot of 21 Jump Street. And now seeing his other talents as a dancer inspires me to say that this can be an inspiration to you for developing more than one skill you may have.

We all have hidden gifts, skills and talents. Be inspired by real-life examples of individuals who demonstrated their multiple talents to the world. Your hidden talents can also be skills that come so natural and easy to you that you may not realize someone would want to pay you for that skill! Today do your best to become aware at how good you are at something you can then label as YOUR talent!

Tip#627: Perseverance & Teamwork, Part 2 - Wreck-It Ralph

I feel extremely grateful to be connected with some talented and very supportive speakers, life coaches and business coaches because we all help each other stay positive and pro-active. We all get stuck once in awhile and yet we can still shine when empowering one another with specific skill sets and talents.

Everyone needs motivation sometimes so it is important to have supportive relationships to keep moving you forward.

Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

The 3D animated film Wreck-It Ralph is about a video game villain named Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) who wants to be a hero instead of the bad guy for a change. His quest brings havoc to his arcade game world as well as the other video games he enters. There are several colourful worlds Ralph visits such as a Sci Fi war themed game, Hero’s Duty and a kart-racing game called Sugar Rush where he meets Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) who also dreams of being more then what she is.

There are so many wonderful life lessons for young and old in this highly entertaining and imaginative film. Striving to be more than what you are is a big one and this can be inspiring if you are exploring new career options or unhappy with your current job. Teamwork is another factor for achieving goals and you’ll see how Ralph and Vanellope and other characters help each other with their own unique skills and gifts.

Other motivational themes:
• Self-worth and purpose
• Following a passion and vision
• Resilience and perseverance
• Teamwork

When you have a vision to be more than what you are now it is important to cultivate other individuals with talents that can support you. You, in turn, can help them with their own goals. Your road towards your vision can be fun and enjoyable as long as you surround yourself with amazing, supportive people!

Tip#626: Perseverance & Teamwork, Part 1 – The Fugitive

Early this morning I had the most incredible, vivid dream that I was with a group of fantastic people working as a team on something huge. I guess you could say they were my “dream team”! It felt so real and I knew we were all working to help make the world a better place. I woke up feeling so fresh and rejuvenated and brimming with enthusiasm. I loved the idea that I had a super team working on a global level.

I currently have an amazing team of a business coach, wellness coach and business advisors I am very grateful for. I'd like to believe the dream I had was a cosmic message that a new team is coming together for the next exciting phase of Motivatorman!

The Fugitive (1993)

The action thriller The Fugitive is about Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) unjustly accused of murdering his wife and must find the real killer. He is pursued by a team of U.S. Marshals led by Deputy Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). Kimble demonstrates great resilience as he survives a train collision, leaping from a high dam and being the target of a nationwide manhunt. Regardless of his adversities, Kimble persevered to do whatever it took to clear his name.

I have seen this film many times over the years and always found it very entertaining. It was only recently that I recognized that Gerard and his team also demonstrated great perseverance and effective teamwork. Gerard showed strong leadership and his team of deputies responded by following his directions with success. There was also a humorous comradery showing how they enjoyed working together.

We all have dreams and goals we want to achieve whether it’s in the workplace, a business, career or in life. Finding a dream team can make the tasks much faster to accomplish especially when you find a group of supportive individuals filled with respect, professionalism and a positive attitude. And if you already have a dream team then celebrate this special group today!

Tip#625: Rude, Crude & Hilarious Movies – Top 5 Movies

Do you enjoy rude and crude comedies? I do because they make me laugh big time! And I have seen some that absolutely shocked me with what they showed OR what I heard coming out of a famous actor’s mouth!

There is the just released new comedy I have yet to see called Movie 43 and it is being promoted as one of the most shocking, original and dangerous comedies ever made. It includes many big stars like Halle Berry, Kate Winslet, Hugh Jackman, Emma Stone and Richard Gere. Here is the uncensored red-band trailer (WARNING, swearing and nudity!): Click here

For now here is a list of my top 5 rude, crude and hilarious movies!

Bridesmaids - Unrated (2011)

This comedy stars Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph and has some over the top scenes! There’s one where all the bridesmaids and bride eat at a Brazilian steak restaurant, get food poisoning and later try on dresses at a bridal shop. What happens next is shockingly funny!

The Dictator - BANNED & UNRATED Version (2012)

I almost included Sascha Baron Cohen’s other film Borat on this list but would rather include The Dictator because it seems to get funnier each time I see it. It is just jam-packed full of hilarious ad-libbed lines and crazy scenes. One scene was simply about the dictator trying to come up with a fake name in a restaurant by using words from the signs on the wall. You just have to see it!

Horrible Bosses – Totally Inappropriate Edition (2011]

A big part of why this film is funny is seeing actors Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston do and say things so dirty and so wrong! Aniston plays a dentist sexually harassing her assistant and is so fun and shocking at the same time! At the end credits they show bloopers so keep watching for more laughs.

Knocked Up - Unrated and Unprotected (2007)

This comedy stars Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd who have been in a number of comedies built on the benefits of ad-libbed scenes. This film is packed with so many movie references and F-bombs that repeat viewings would be in order. The film is both funny and insightful about dealing with unexpected changes in life.

Ted - Unrated (2012)

If you love the TV series The Family Guy then you will love creator Seth MacFarlane’s movie debut about a teddy bear that comes to life and becomes a dirty, vulgar bear. This film is absolutely packed full of 80’s pop culture references and, like many of the movies listed, have a heartfelt message.

So if you are entertained by comedies filled with swearing and politically incorrect humor then you’ll enjoy these movie recommendations! Are these movies motivational? Well if they make you laugh and feel good then yes. A good belly laugh is good for the soul! Laughter reduces blood pressure and stress hormones. It improves alertness, creativity and memory. So have a great, big laugh today!

Tip#624: Movies Inspired by Actual Events - Won’t Back Down

“Have you heard about those mothers that lift one ton trucks off their babies? They’re nothing compared to me.” Won’t Back Down (2012)

There are many movies based on true stories where the facts are altered to enhance the flow of the story or fit a certain screen time. Films like The King’s Speech, Argo and Titanic still have an emotional impact despite changes to the actual events. In the end I believe if a movie can inspire you to be a better person then it has achieved it’s greatest purpose.

Check out this fascinating website called Chasing the Frog that is about “chasing after the truth behind movies based on true stories”. Some films featured include The Blind Side, Erin Brockovich, The Pursuit of Happyness, Rudy, Schindler’s List and Titanic: Click here

Won't Back Down (2012)

The movie Won’t Back Down is about two determined mothers, Jamie (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and Nona (Viola Davis) who aim to transform their children’s failing inner city school. The film is loosely based on events in 2010 Los Angeles where several groups of parents attempted to take over several failing public schools. Both Jamie and Nona demonstrated great passion and perseverance all for the love of their children and their future. See: movie trailer

Jamie’s strength as a leader was inspiring. She showed great confidence, resilience and indestructible optimism to achieve a task that seemed impossible. These challenges ended up bringing out the best in Jamie and re-ignited Nona’s passion for teaching. Their passion is also what helped attracted the individuals they needed for success!

Whether a movie is based on fact, fiction or a little of both let it inspire you to bring out your best. Let the movie heroes re-ignite your passion and increase your confidence, resilience, perseverance and optimism. Let their story help you create a more amazing life story for yourself today!

Tip#623: Be Open to Unexpected Movies that Entertain, Part 1 – Django Unchained

In my book, Movies for Motivation: How to Stay Strong in Difficult Times I outline three factors of how movies can help you:

A) Entertain & Escape
B) Re-energize & Release
C) Insights, Epiphanies & AHA moments

For me, the first factor is very important as I always want to be entertained by a film and escape into another world for awhile. This usually leads to the 2nd and 3rd factor if the movie has stories and movie heroes that inspire. And sometimes there are films that I initially have no interest in seeing and yet am drawn to because of my gut feeling or intuition. Or if a film is nominated for an Oscar or other awards it peaks my curiosity. This happened with Django Unchained.

Django Unchained (2012)

The American western film, Django Unchained is about a German bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) who teams up with a slave he freed named Django (Jamie Foxx). Together they track down wanted criminals and then set out to rescue Django’s wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). The film is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino so it is overflowing with his trademark dialogue, over-the-top violence and unique mashup of cinematic styles and soundtrack songs.

From the opening scene I was immediately drawn into the movie especially with Waltz’s charismatic performance of Schultz. I loved how articulate he was and how he followed a code of ethics that he always communicated with extreme confidence. He inspired me to emulate the same confidence in my life and profession. And Schultz inspired me in how he treated Django like an equal human being and together they achieved many goals. These movie heroes could inspire you too.

Sometimes there are films you have no interest in seeing and yet, when the time is right, they can help re-energize your spirit and fill you with insights for improving your life or career. Most importantly, movies are meant to entertain and help you escape for awhile. Be open to a meaningful, unexpected cinematic experience coming to you today!

Tip#622: The Gain in Pain – Les Misérables

I started a weekly 90 minute exercise class called Total Body Workout which is the first major exercise I’ve committed to since I stopped doing Ashtanga Yoga over a year and a half ago. The physical pain I experienced in the first class was excruciating as I struggled to keep up with the instructor and driving dance tracks.

I knew this pain was good for my body and yet every limb was screaming and burning. What got me through was thinking of the pain some movie heroes had to endure.

Les Misérables (2012)

The musical drama Les Misérables is based on a musical and French novel of the same name taking place in 19th century France. It is about Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) who breaks his parole and is hunted for decades by a ruthless policeman named Javert (Russell Crowe). The film is like an opera which means all of the dialogue is sung.

Les Misérables translated variously from French means the miserable ones, the wretched, the poor ones, the victims and this film is filled with characters experiencing very difficult lives. The one character that touched me the most was Fantine (Anne Hathaway), who is let go from her job at Valjean’s factory and forced into prostitution to support her young daughter. Hathaway’s performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" is heart-wrenching and deeply emotional to watch. It was all one shot and sung live for the camera capturing all the pain her character had to endure. See: movie trailer

This scene inspired me in that Fantine’s pain and misery was being expressed in song. She poured out the passion of the pain she was in. And so out of her pain came something positive and beautiful. That’s what I am applying to my challenging exercises because I know my physical, mental and emotional bodies will greatly benefit. There is gain in my pain!

We all experience pain in some form in our lives, careers and relationships. We just need to focus on the hidden learnings and benefits within it. Find the silver lining and then you’ll be able to endure and overcome those difficult times.

Tip#621: Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining, Part 2 - Silver Linings Playbook

This past week has been full of wonderful gifts in the form of messages I’ve received from readers/fans who love this movie blog. Their comments on how I’ve helped them in some way become bright lights reminding me that I am on the right track with my purpose in life! And on those days I feel a dark cloud come over me their messages will remind me of the silver lining and to, once again, focus on the positives!

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

The romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook is about Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) just released from a mental health facility and learning to live again after a traumatic marital experience. He meets another troubled person named Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence) and though they have a volatile start to their relationship begin working together on a dance competition.

There is so much more about this amazing film than this simply plot! The electric chemistry between the couple and performances of all the other characters are just so engaging. Pat’s relationship with his parents (Robert DeNiro and Jackie Weaver) is full of fireworks and beautiful, heartfelt moments. The performances ended up achieving a rare feat of being nominated in all four acting categories for the 85th Academy Awards.

This film is about moving forward from painful experiences, family, love, laughter, letting go and most of all healing. In a lot of ways the title Silver Linings Playbook says it all, where personal development tips based on the phrase “every cloud has a silver lining” are scattered throughout the film. Silver lining is a metaphor for optimism and this movie will put you in that feel good feeling!

Sometimes it’s a challenge to see the positives while you are in a negative situation. That’s why movies can be there to help entertain you and transform a negative mindset. Films can help you step away from your challenges and then allow you to see the silver lining. Fill yourself with optimism today and be amazed at the shining positives that were in front of you all along!

Tip#620: Find Confidence from a Movie - Superstar

This post is a little different because I am featuring a movie that was more inspiring for someone else than me and needed to share her story! I recently met a Chinese woman who came to Canada 18 years ago who got excited when I told her the title of my new book, Movies for Motivation: How to Stay Strong in Difficult Times. She said she knew exactly what my book was about because, during her difficult time looking for a job after graduating University, a comedy had helped her tremendously.

The movie she referred to was 1999’s Superstar and she really lit up as she remembered the movie hero having helped her believe in herself. She found her confidence and immediately got a great job at a mutual funds company. Her enthusiasm was so contagious that I knew I had to share her story. Her movie recommendation could inspire you!

Superstar (1999)

The comedy Superstar is about a nerdy Catholic schoolgirl, Mary Katherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon) dreaming of superstardom. Despite being picked on at school Mary perseveres to enter a talent show being supported by other socially inept students. She is also supported by God played by Will Ferrell who also portrays her love interest Sky. Mary is also a movie lover and finds much inspiration from films such as Carrie and The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.

There are some hilarious scenes and one that was surprisingly heartfelt. In one scene Mary sadly reveals to a new friend that she “sometimes hates the way I am”. With this new friend’s belief in her she finds her confidence and then inspires her fellow performers with this quote she later says is from the movie The Initiation of Sarah starring Shelley Winters.

“Don't listen to the names that people call you. If you believe in yourself, then nobody can hurt you. You are your own rainbow.”

Whether it is a drama, fantasy or a comedy, movies have the ability to inspire the best in you. Movie heroes who overcome difficult times can mirror you to do the same. You are already a superstar! All you have to do is believe it!

Tip#619: Movie Prescription for Mid-Life Crisis - This Is 40

Even though I currently do not have any kids I do feel like a gave birth to my first book last month in December (see tip#610). I know it’s not the same as the real thing and yet my book Movies for Motivation still feels like my baby! And though I am in my late 40's I believe I will still meet that special woman to share my life with and possibly having a family of my own. In the meantime I get to see the ups and downs of my close friends with kids or without and the comedies that come with being in their mid-life!

This Is 40 (2012)

The comedy This Is 40 is “the sort-of sequel” to Knocked Up from writer/director Judd Apatow and continues to follow the lives of middle-aged married couple Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann). The hilarious dialogue throughout reflects many of the life experiences anyone faces, questions and ponders entering their 40’s. Their children Sadie and Charlotte (played by real-life daughters of Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow) also add to the humour with their own points of view to life as siblings and as daughters.

The film also features Pete and Debbie’s relationships with each of their fathers Larry (Albert Brooks) and Oliver (John Lithgow). What makes their scenes inspiring is when during Pete’s celebration of his 40th birthday Debbie actually says exactly what anyone really wants to say about what pisses them off about a parent! And in doing so it actually helps improve the relationship.

I laughed a lot throughout the film and it also made me reflective of my own choices in life with its many perceptive scenes. In fact I highly recommend this film for any couples experiencing stress with their spouse or family because it covers so many topics that could generate much needed laughter and release! And even if you are younger than 40 this movie will still make you laugh and maybe even prepare you for what lies ahead!

Movies can provide many insights for seeing your own life challenges in a new light. At the same time they can help you laugh and release any stress you are feeling. Find a movie today that can provide both these key factors and you’ll feel better right away!
