Tip#994: Get Energized by Cinematic Thrills, Part 2 - The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years

The excitement in the air is so high at red carpet premieres at The Toronto International Film Festival! At TIFF 2016 I remember the crowd screaming when we all saw Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel come out of their limos for their film Lion. And over the years I remember countless live concerts I’ve attended in my teens (Rush, David Bowie, Prince) where the crowd was unified by cheers that was deafening!

I also have fond memories of the massive, thrilling crowds I was part of parading on the streets of Toronto when the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series of 1992 and then the following year of 1993. It was an incredible, electric feeling! The positive emotional energy was crackling and the shared passion, fun and joy was truly amazing to soak up.

The Beatles were my favourite band as a kid (next to ELO) and I wished I old enough to see them play live in the early 60’s. The energy from the screaming girls in early footage I have seen was both hilarious and riveting! But you could never hear the band because of how loud the girls were yelling. Thankfully there is a new documentary that helps put you in the audience and experience the music and thrill of The Beatles in concert.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (2016)

The documentary, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, is directed by Ron Howard and is a compilation of found fan footage featuring new music, interviews, photos and stories of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. This highly engaging film captures the excitement of The Beatle’s live concerts and has been remixed so you can hear the fantastic music and singing. See: movie trailer

This is a must-see film for music lovers as well as Beatles fans. There is so much to love about this documentary and one of them was when they were trying to turn Ringo’s drum kit to face the audience and then they launched into an explosive performance of I Saw Her Standing There. This film would showcase many more performances where you can clearly hear how well they sang and played despite them later saying they couldn’t hear themselves or each other because of the audience screaming!

The size of some of the crowds were stunning like at the 1965 performance at Shea Stadium in New York City of 55,600 in attendance. The movie would also add touching stories of stars like Whoopi Goldberg who, as a poor child, wanted to see The Beatles and her mom surprised her with tickets to the show. There is also a wonderful scene of actress Sigourney Weaver and found footage of herself as a teen at a Beatle’s concert.

Live concerts and events with people sharing their excitement and passion is a powerful feeling! And if you are not able to be part of these events then documentaries and films can give you a taste of the thrill and positive emotional energy! It’s amazing that film can capture exciting times for people to enjoy now and in the future. Enjoy these cinematic thrills today and feel the fun, joy and energy flow through you!

Tip#993: Unleash Your Inner Lion - Southpaw

When I saw the Netflix documentary, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru (see tip#983) I was inspired by a segment about unleashing your inner lion. Soon after, several synchronicities appeared in my life that would remind me of this empowerment idea! This included illustrating a fierce lion for a client’s book project and then I realized my laptop screensaver was a close up of a lion’s face. I had to laugh at these magical coincidences especially the idea I’ve been looking at a lion’s face everyday without consciously recognizing it. But I believe my unconscious mind was see it.

When I first saw the movie trailer for Southpaw it exuded that lion energy of explosive fierceness especially from the raw looking scenes of Jake Gyllenhaal. I didn’t want to see this film because it also showed scenes of him losing his home which touched on my own experiences. But since I recently saw director Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (see tip#991) and The Equalizer (see tip#787) I wanted to see more of his films. And I am so glad I watched Southpaw because it inspired me on many levels, especially my inner lion!

My screen saver!

Southpaw (2015)

The sports drama film, Southpaw, is about Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), the reigning junior middleweight boxing champion who must deal with personal tragedy and the loss of his family, work and home. This gritty, powerful movie features amazing boxing scenes as well as outstanding performances by Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Oona Laurance as Billy’s daughter. See: movie trailer

Fuqua’s films all radiate that fierce lion energy and Southpaw is bristling with it. In the boxing ring Billy clearly exudes that raw, ferocious energy and his journey is about learning how to channel it into surviving his life crisis. It is also inspiring to see fierceness in McAdams’s role as his wife Maureen as well as his daughter Leila. They all have specific scenes that are emotional powerhouse performances that are heartfelt and riveting.

Inspiring Themes:
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Tenacity
• Indestructible Optimism
• Redemption
• Family
• Grieving

The story is also about redemption and resilience and the will to change one’s behavior, thinking and attitude in order to survive, get back to work and keep family together. For me this film is now another resilience resource for reminding me of my inner lion. This inner lion represents the assertive, tenacious, fierce energy needed to overcome overwhelming adversity and unexpected change and crisis.

What about you? What are your favourite films that remind you of your inner lion energy? Let me know!

Tip#992: The Power of Movie Trailers – 4 Movies

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

I was really looking forward to seeing Tim Burton’s new film, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children because both of its trailers were so visually exciting! They showed a breathtaking, magical world of kids with special, superhero-like abilities and I was hooked! But when I finally saw it on opening day my excitement deflated because the film didn’t flow well for me. Many scenes were visually amazing but I just wasn’t emotionally engaged as much as seeing the trailers.
See: Trailer 1
See: Trailer 2

When I feature a movie on this blog it’s because I received a clear, inspirational message, life lesson or positive emotional charge. And though I may receive these factors in future viewings of Burton’s film I just felt more strongly about the trailers. And that is, of course, the point of movie trailers and teasers, they are meant to get you excited about seeing that film.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Some movie teasers tap into nostalgic feelings that trigger deep emotional reactions like the 2nd teaser of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. For people like myself that grew up loving the original Star Wars trilogy of the mid 70’s I cried when Han Solo and Chewbacca appeared at the end of the teaser. I wasn’t alone as millions of other grown men admitted to crying too! And then seeing the movie was an epic experience that tapped more into the nostalgic feelings. And for a laugh check out this fun, hilarious video using a scene from Inception to convey the emotional feelings of seeing the Star Wars teaser. See: Matthew Mcconaughey's reaction to Star Wars teaser #2 - Celebrity reactions

Now check out this mashup of 20 fan reactions to the teaser that will put a huge smile on your face! See: Reactions Mashup (20 Reactions)

La La Land (2016)

The two teaser trailers for La La Land were so surprisingly simple and yet riveting in its magical, musical quality. There was something so fresh about them! When I saw it at TIFF 2016 I was so happy to discover that it went far beyond the trailers and proved itself to be astonishingly fantastic and heartfelt on so many levels.
See: Teaser #1
See: Teaser #2

A Dog’s Purpose (2017)

This movie trailer is pure perfection! It went straight to my heart! It was like a work of art in conveying the joy for what I hope this movie will be like when I finally see it. And yet there is a possibility that the trailer is better then the film itself. See: Movie trailer

In the end you have to see movies for yourself and decide whether its teaser or trailer matched the quality of what you first viewed. Either way trailers and teasers are part of the magic and excitement of movies!

How about you? Have you seen a movie trailer that you loved? Please let me know!

Tip#991: Inspiring Movies for Diversity, Part 1 - The Magnificent Seven

One of the enduring benefits of the original Star Trek series from the 60’s are the countless stories of real-people of different racial backgrounds that were inspired by the visible minorities on the show. Astronauts like Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to fly in space, was inspired by the show as a little girl. Scientists, engineers and movie makers like Whoopi Goldberg were also inspired by the groundbreaking vision of equality on this show.

The Star Trek series inspired me as well and because I grew up in the glorious diversity and cultural mosaic/melting pot of Toronto, these were important factors for molding my mind and attitude for inclusion and respect for different people and their cultures. Growing up I was always around friends that were Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, blacks and white. That’s why it always excites me to see films that demonstrate diversity and inclusion like the 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven.

Nichols Nichols (Lt. Uhura from original Star Trek series) and Astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison who had a cameo role on Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Magnificent Seven (2016)

The western drama, The Magnificent Seven, is a remake of the 1960 version of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. This gritty, updated story has some great performances by a diverse cast that include Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard. And yes you do hear the classic 60’s music theme! See: movie trailer

Inspiring Themes:
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Strategic Thinking
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Community

The film has many examples of life and work lessons such as perseverance, resilience, strategic thinking, leadership, teamwork and the strength in community. Where the movie really shines is it’s visible minorities with unique skill sets and the authenticity of its cast. It also has a strong female character. For example…

• Denzel Washington (African American) plays Sam Chisolm, a bounty hunter, licensed lawman and the leader of the Seven
• Vincent D'Onofrio (White American) as Jack Horne, an elderly skilled tracker
• Byung-hun Lee (Asian) as Billy Rocks, a knife-wielding assassin
• Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Mexican) as Vasquez, a Mexican outlaw
• Martin Sensmeier (Native American) as Red Harvest, a Comanche warrior
• Haley Bennett (White American) as Emma Cullen, a strong-willed young woman who hires the Seven

The film’s diverse casting has been featured in the press and there is one article that addresses something I noticed in the movie. With the inclusion of an Asian and an African American in a leadership role there was almost no racial slurs like in a Quentin Tarantino's Western. I was really happy about this and was addressed by the director Antoine Fuqua in an article. It is little touches like this that I believe will help increase respect for other people’s differences through cinema.

Read: Why The Magnificent Seven Doesn't Use Racial Slurs Like Quentin Tarantino's Westerns

There is also a humorous social media campaign called #StarringJohnCho aimed at increasing castings of Asian-American actors. This features actor John Cho’s face being photoshopped into popular Hollywood film posters, like The Martian, The Avengers and as James Bond in Spectre. Cho also made headlines when his character, Lieutenant Sulu of the film Star Trek Beyond, was shown to be gay and with a loving family. It’s initiatives like these that can help increase awareness and change in Hollywood.

I am glad diversity and inclusion are being addressed in the movies, TV shows and even at The Academy Awards because it provides hope that changes will increase for more inspiring role-models for both young and old. I want to live in a world where there is more harmony in my community and workplace. Is this the world you’d like to live in too?

Tip#990: Movie For A Rainy Day, Part 3 - Hunt for the Wilderpeople

I remember so clearly the day after I saw La La Land at The Toronto International Film Festival. I was still very emotional about the ending of this film and it was raining all day long. The dark day really reflected how I was feeling. I was profoundly melancholy and reflective of my life decisions over the years because of the messages I received from this movie (see tip#988).

I could also feel my inner child craving some comfort food and I so baked some Pillsbury chocolate chip cookies. The timeless smell, sight and taste of fresh, hot cookies lifted me up as I listened to the rain pour outside my window. This was the perfect time for a rainy day movie and thankfully I found the perfect one.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

The adventure comedy-drama film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, is about a rebellious boy named Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) and his foster uncle (Sam Neill) in the New Zealand wilderness escaping a national manhunt for them. This wonderful, lighthearted, charming movie is filled with quirky characters and beautiful, lush scenery and is sprinkled with hilarious film references! See: movie trailer

There was so much to like about this film. The character of Ricky is lovingly goofy while the music has a big nostalgic 80’s synth feel to it. I also loved hearing their Kiwi accents! Watching this movie was like a warm blanket on a dark, reflective day where everything was suddenly right with the world. I was whisked away to the gorgeous green locations of New Zealand and spent some time with new cinematic friends. I felt at peace and also enjoyed warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!

Films can lift your spirits up on a rainy day. Comfort food too! Remember that you can always find the perfect movie prescription to help you find some peace of mind and comfort from a dark day you are in. What rainy day movies to do enjoy?
