Tip#993: Unleash Your Inner Lion - Southpaw

When I saw the Netflix documentary, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru (see tip#983) I was inspired by a segment about unleashing your inner lion. Soon after, several synchronicities appeared in my life that would remind me of this empowerment idea! This included illustrating a fierce lion for a client’s book project and then I realized my laptop screensaver was a close up of a lion’s face. I had to laugh at these magical coincidences especially the idea I’ve been looking at a lion’s face everyday without consciously recognizing it. But I believe my unconscious mind was see it.

When I first saw the movie trailer for Southpaw it exuded that lion energy of explosive fierceness especially from the raw looking scenes of Jake Gyllenhaal. I didn’t want to see this film because it also showed scenes of him losing his home which touched on my own experiences. But since I recently saw director Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (see tip#991) and The Equalizer (see tip#787) I wanted to see more of his films. And I am so glad I watched Southpaw because it inspired me on many levels, especially my inner lion!

My screen saver!

Southpaw (2015)

The sports drama film, Southpaw, is about Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), the reigning junior middleweight boxing champion who must deal with personal tragedy and the loss of his family, work and home. This gritty, powerful movie features amazing boxing scenes as well as outstanding performances by Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Oona Laurance as Billy’s daughter. See: movie trailer

Fuqua’s films all radiate that fierce lion energy and Southpaw is bristling with it. In the boxing ring Billy clearly exudes that raw, ferocious energy and his journey is about learning how to channel it into surviving his life crisis. It is also inspiring to see fierceness in McAdams’s role as his wife Maureen as well as his daughter Leila. They all have specific scenes that are emotional powerhouse performances that are heartfelt and riveting.

The story is also about redemption and resilience and the will to change one’s behavior, thinking and attitude in order to survive, get back to work and keep family together. For me this film is now another resilience resource for reminding me of my inner lion. This inner lion represents the assertive, tenacious, fierce energy needed to overcome overwhelming adversity and unexpected change and crisis.
