Tip#1172: What Will Your Legacy Be? Part 5 - The Irishman

Despite feeling high symptoms of seasonal depression (SAD) I pushed myself to attend an early morning breakfast seminar called “Accelerate Your Business”. Wow was I glad I showed up! I was deeply inspired by Keynote Speaker, Lane Merrifield of Club Penguin and Dragon’s Den who shared his personal stories of facing his fears in order to achieve great success in business and in life. He shared a simple tip of taking one small step at a time that he first came up with as a child.

I was then inspired by Workshop Facilitator, Amber Mac, TV Host, Entrepreneur and President of Konnekt Digital Engagement. She gave a mind-blowing presentation of how AI, artificial intelligence is currently, and in the coming future, radically changes our lives and businesses. My inspiration came when she had us think of the biggest craziest ideas and how they could become social enterprises to help the world be a better place.

Amber got me thinking of my legacy and how I wanted to be remembered and it kept coming back to what I’ve been doing with this movie blog. And it’s in the photos and self-care tips I’ve been posting on Instagram and my other social media channels. I want to be a role model for indestructible optimism and resilience in dealing with clinical depression. I have a lifetime of learning I’ve felt compelled to share by harnessing all my creative talents.

That evening, as SAD symptoms slipped me into a dark, depressed state, I watched The Irishman and the idea of legacy also came through during this epic three and a half hour story. It re-energized me to persevere!

The Irishman (2019)

The epic crime drama film, The Irishman, is based on alleged true stories of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a truck driver who becomes a hitman and gets involved with mobster Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and his crime family, including legendary Teamster Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). This is another cinematic achievement by Martin Scorsese and is a riveting movie with many iconic scenes and memorable moments from the amazing cast that also included Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham and Harvey Keitel.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Scorsese’s other films Goodfellas and Casino for many reasons that The Irishman helped me to finally define. They all have an epic, timeless, stylish quality and outstanding performances by De Niro and Pesci. That’s why I felt emotional seeing Pesci come out of retirement for this new film and it felt like seeing an old friend after a long absence.

I also loved being thrust into this nostalgic, sensory world that only Scorsese could create starting with 1950s Philadelphia. The story time jumps with all the character’s lives, showing how their relationships develop and grow over the years. Frank’s violent actions creates consequences with his family which is told in powerful moments without dialogue. There are many other quiet moments that really make us think about what we are seeing on screen.

Watching these character’s adult lives unfold into old age reveals what their legacies would eventually result in. And it led me to, once again, think about my own legacy and how I want to be remembered when I’m gone. My legacy won't be the story of the suffering I endured with clinical depression but of how I persevered and inspired others to develop their own indestructible optimism and resilience!

Getting older has a way of getting you to think about the purpose of one’s life. Watching loved ones get older can also reflect how one wants to be remembered when we pass on. Movies can also inspire us to ponder the choices of our path in life. Be inspired today to make some empowering choices!
