Tip#802: Be Open to Unexpected Movies that Entertain, Part 2 – The Judge – Labor Day

I am always excited when I discover an entertaining film coming from an enthusiastic recommendation from friends, family or even a Facebook connection! Part of it is about trusting my gut or intuition that the timing is right. It’s an exercise in trust and faith that an answer I’ve been seeking is being sent to me in the form of a movie!

Here are two recent examples where the films were not what I expected but had personal messages for me about dealing with family and other life challenges.

The Judge (2014)

The drama, The Judge, is about big city lawyer Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) who returns to his childhood home and faces unsolved issues and an unexpected challenge with his father Judge Joseph Palmer (Robert Duvall). This film has many powerful, emotional scenes that are funny, sad and inspiring. See: movie trailer

What inspired me was seeing Hank’s dazzling legal expertise and overflowing confidence at play either in public or in the courtroom. I loved how his gifts were able to bring him closer to his father and his two brothers.

Labor Day (2013)

The drama, Labor Day, presents the recollections of a 13 year old named Henry Wheeler (Gattlin Griffith) and the Labor Day weekend spent with his mother Adele (Kate Winslet) and an escaped convict Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin). Despite the grim premise of kidnapping this film unexpectedly becomes heartwarming and life affirming. See: movie trailer

What inspired me was seeing Frank demonstrate excellent skills as a compassionate father, husband, handyman and cook. There is a wonderful scene where Frank shows Henry and Adele how to make a peach pie and it becomes a beautiful moment of bonding and sharing the joys of baking. The film also has a hopeful message that dreams can eventually come true.

These two films entertained and inspired me to be a better man and improve my relationships with family. Hopefully you find a special cinematic message for yourself from these or other films you feel compelled to watch. Remember to trust your gut and intuition when a movie calls out to you. It just may be the universe sending you answers you’ve been seeking!
