Tip#651: Cultivate Community, Part 2 - Defiance

I’ve started to look for a new home and it has already left me feeling uprooted and displaced. Amazingly, three of my closest friends are also in the process of moving to new homes. I find this very synchronistic as we have all been very supportive of each other for many years and feel we must be shifting into new phases of our lives.

One of these friends has hosted many weekly movie nights and dinners at his home which always filled me with much inspiration and fun over the years. And on the last of our movie nights at his (soon to be) previous home he highly recommended we watch Defiance. The film synchronistically spoke about uprooting homes and cultivating community.

Defiance (2008)

The World War II film, Defiance, is based on a true story of three Jewish brothers who saved Jews in Belarus within Eastern Europe. The Bielski brothers Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Live Schreiber) and Asael (Jamie Bell) all grew as strong leaders as they helped create a new community of escapees hiding in the forest. This gritty story has many powerful, emotional performances set in the contrast of beautiful forest scenery during the changing seasons.

The story also demonstrates the focus and building of community in order to survive. The escapees grew in numbers and they had to relocate and build new homes several times. Times were harsh and yet they learned to work together, share whatever food they had and put aside differences in order to continue living.

There may be times you feel uprooted and displaced in your life or career. This is where good friends, family and neighbors come in to support you in your time of need. And it is important to be there for them when they need help. A sense of community is a powerful support system that goes both ways. Cultivate a caring community mindset today!
