Tip#1005: Random Acts of Kindness, Part 3 - Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon

I love promoting people I believe in! That’s why I use my passion for photography to take photos of these people and their work and post them on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and my Instagram channel called The Film Food Friends Project. I just want people around the world to know about them and their services!

Helping others through my creative skills has led to over 1,000 photos on my Instagram project. Doing photography is actually a creative coping method for clinical depression as is creating artwork, music, motivational programs and over 1,000 tips on my movie blog. So much of this has never been seen in public and my big dream is to share these creations and inspire and empower others!

This dream is so overwhelming that I realized I need a manager like the one I had in my previous business as an illustrator and creative director. When I brought this need up for a manager with a friend he enthusiastically recommended I see a documentary directed by fellow Canadian Mike Myers. I immediately watched it and it gave me a powerful vision of what I was looking for! It showed me that there are people doing successful business but are secretly doing random acts of kindness too!

Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (2013)

The documentary film, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, is about talent manager Shep Gordon and his famous clients and altruistic approach to his business and in living life. This highly entertaining movie features many life lessons and testimonials from Shep’s friends and clients that include Alice Cooper, Michael Douglas, Emeril Lagasse, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson and Sylvester Stallone. See: movie trailer

There are several exciting reasons to love this documentary. First is the brilliant creative marketing ideas Shep had for his clients. One of my favourite stories is about another Canadian Anne Murray. Although she was very different from his other Rock n Roll clients (Alice Cooper) he loved her wholesome folk music voice. So to help promote her Shep arranged a photo of her with John Lennon, Alice Cooper and other famous people. Her career quickly took off thanks to Shep’s personal desire to help her!

Secondly, Shep was also responsible for the first generation of “celebrity chefs” like Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck. He began managing them because they were not making any money from their public performances. So he wanted to help by getting them television shows and their products onto the supermarket shelves. It’s been said that there would be no Food Network, no Bravo, probably no Eater without Shep Gordon.

A third reason this film inspires is Shep’s passion for simply making other people feel good. He learned to cook from a famous French three star Michelin chef Roger VergĂ© and further expanded his life philosophy…

“The idea is to make everyone feel as good as they could possibly feel. You focus completely on your guests. It's never about what you want.”

Looking back seven years ago I feel grateful for having been introduced to the mensch concept as co-host of The Mensch Life Show with host and Mortgage Agent David Grossman. Mensch is defined as a person of integrity and honor; a person regarded as being honorable and responsible and having strength of character. This is the kind of person I always want to be and make people feel good with my work like Shep Gordon!

Tip#1004: Expand Your Mind with Science Fiction, Part 10 - Arrival

As I write this there have been 1,000’s of anti-Trump protesters marching the streets of major US cities and around the world every day since the US election results four days ago. It is so surreal and yet I already felt I stepped into an alternate universe since I watched the election debates and aftermath. I am so conscious that our world is going through a major change whether we like it or not.

At the same time I am going through personal changes and healing with the assistance of new like-minded health professionals and friends I have met. We share a passion of how movies can help expand our minds and new ways of thinking. One new film is about learning how to communicate with alien life that is so different from humans. I knew since seeing the trailer that it would have important life lessons about being understood clearly in any form of interaction in life and at work. And I was right!

Arrival (2016)

The science fiction drama film, Arrival, is about Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leading a team of investigators to communicate with aliens from gigantic spaceships in 12 locations around the world. This riveting movie features incredible visuals and concepts that will have you thinking well after you see it! See: movie trailer

This film is one of the most intelligent, thought-provoking alien/SCI FI movies I've ever seen! It really explores the essence of language and expands on the concept and process of communicating with more evolved beings. There is also a secondary and highly important theme I cannot write about yet because it would be a major spoiler! So I highly recommend you see this film ASAP so you can experience a powerful reveal in the story.

Tip#1003: Be Inspired by Amazing True Stories, Part 8 - Hacksaw Ridge

I woke up this morning to the results of the 2016 election and it felt so surreal. In the news and on social media there was deluge of emotional unrest from comments around the world. The day before I was feeling some anxiety and felt compelled to go to the re-energizing magic of a movie theatre and decided to see Hacksaw Ridge.

I chose to see it for many reasons, one of which was this incredible story of a war hero who performed miraculous feats of bravery and courage. Another is that the film received a 10-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the 73rd Venice Film Festival. This was also Mel Gibson's first directed film in 10 years. So I was very curious to see this movie that was also getting rave reviews.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

The biographical war film, Hacksaw Ridge, is about WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who served during the Battle of Okinawa, and maintained his faith and principals not to carry a gun or kill anyone. This highly inspiring, visceral film features truly outstanding performances by Garfield as well as Hugo Weaving, Teresa Palmer, Vince Vaughn, Luke Bracey and Sam Worthington. See: movie trailer

This is one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen about inner strength, faith, conviction, resilience and indestructible optimism. There's also something gorgeous and classic about the look and feel of the movie. And despite the truly horrific scenes of war and death there are shining moments of inner strength and the caring support Desmond receives throughout his difficult path to uphold his beliefs. There is also a beautiful love story with Desmond and Dorothy, played by a radiant Teresa Palmer.

Inspiring Themes:

• Perseverance
• Conviction, Courage & Bravery

Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships

Sometimes when the world feels like it’s falling apart or you feel alone, lost or hopeless you can feel better from the uplifting power of a real-life hero. And a movie about this hero can move your spirit deeply to keep moving forward. These heroes can help you reach inside yourself and find the strength to achieve your goals no matter who tries to stop you. Be inspired today to persevere!

Tip#1002: Your Thoughts Have So Much Power, Part 2 – Doctor Strange

I remember decades ago when my mom was very crippled in her hands and legs with rheumatoid arthritis. But my mom was a fighter and ignored doctors who told her there were no cures. So she researched and discovered the alternative healing practices of Chinese herbs and acupuncture. Soon she recovered the use of her hands was able to walk again. She went back to her doctors and they were amazed. Today she still needs to maintain her health and these ancient healing methods are part of her regiment.

My mom inspired me to always be open to alternative healing practices and beliefs when it came to my own physical and mental health challenges. At the same time I grew up loving science fiction movies that featured time-travel and alternate reality concepts. These themes excited my imagination to stay open to amazing possibilities in life. I believe that is the key to discovering solutions to any challenges anyone may face in their life or work.

That’s why it thrills me to know that certain movies like Marvel's Doctor Strange are overflowing with mind-expanding concepts of topics I am passionate about like time-travel, spiritual beliefs, Eastern healing methods, out-of-body experiences, near-death experiences, healing power of the mind, alternate realities and multidimensional space!

Doctor Strange (2016)

The superhero film, Doctor Strange, is a about a former neurosurgeon named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who goes on a journey of healing only to discover mystical practices for altering time and space through the teachings of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). This entertaining film is filled with mind-blowing imagery and thought-provoking concepts. Also starring Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong. See: movie trailer

The physics bending visuals of this film are absolutely stunning, imaginative, breathtaking and very mind-blowing! It’s definitely psychedelic and hallucinogenic as well. They reminded me of other amazing visuals I’ve loved from movies such as Inception, Contact and 2001: A Space Odyssey. And all these scenes have a purpose to demonstrate to Doctor Strange the power and hidden potential of his own mind.

If you’ve done any personal growth and development work via motivational/self-help books or seminars then you already know that our thoughts and beliefs (conscious and unconscious) can shape our realities and life path. This superhero film can inspire you to expand your mind and remind you to believe there are always solutions to challenges that seem impossible to solve.

Inspiring Themes:
• Having a Vision
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Personal Growth & Development
• Metaphysical & Spiritual Beliefs
• Alternate Healing Methods

Do your best to have an open mind in your life and work. And be prepared to let go of what you think you know in order to let hidden solutions appear on your path. Imaginative movies can help you visualize new worlds of thinking and seeing. Be inspired today through the power of cinema!

Tip#1001: Remember the Magic of Cinema, Part 5 - Amadeus Live at The Sony Centre

I have a life long passion for going to see movies in a theatre because seeing the huge visuals and hearing the dialogue and music with a live audience is always energizing! Now imagine hearing the music being played live with a full orchestra and choir. This happened when I recently attended a special screening of Amadeus at The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto and it was one of the greatest cinematic experiences I’ve ever had! It was a real gift thanks to my friends at Movie Poster.com.

The evening started with a discussion featuring two music scholars on what was true and made up about the film’s characters Mozart and Salieri. Later I was absolutely thrilled to hear the live orchestra and choir began to play with the film projected above them! The musicians sounded so perfect as they matched every music cue within the movie. And it was clear the packed audience was enjoying the show because of all the laughter and applause throughout!

One of the reasons why this was a truly unique presentation are because of scenes like Salieri describing the individual instruments, like a clarinet or oboe, of a Mozart piece. You can see that specific musician playing live onstage! And later, for the Requiem Death Mass, Salieri is assisting Mozart to compose the individual instruments and vocals and we got to see each part played live and sections of the choir standing when it was their turn. It was breathtaking!

I highly recommend you see this series of films with live music because it is utterly one of the most amazing experiences you could have with a movie! See more: Sony Centre Toronto

Amadeus (1984)

The period drama film, Amadeus, is about the music and life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) as seen through the eyes of his rival Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) in 18th century Vienna. This stunning, entertaining movie is overflowing with astounding performances, lavish costumes and sets and is filled with Mozart’s beautiful music! The film won 8 of 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. See: movie trailer

There is so much to love about this epic film! I remember loving it when it was first released in 1984. I was in art college at the time and Mozart’s overflowing musical talents and joyful, silly personality really inspired me! Seeing the film at the Sony Centre was the first time in decades and it still holds up well. F. Murray Abraham’s Oscar-winning performance was riveting to watch and his old man makeup still looked fantastic!

If you love classical music or you are any kind of artist or musician then Amadeus is a must-see! There is a director’s cut but I recommend the original theatrical version. The movie was also chockfull of inspirational and motivational themes.

Inspiring Themes:
• Having a Vision
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Confidence
• Creative Process
• Supportive Relationships

Remember the magic of going to the cinema and seeing a movie with an audience. Feel how energized you can get seeing the characters and locations you see on the screen. And let your spirit be uplifted by the music and sounds that fill the theatre! Cinema is a powerful resource for you to enjoy anytime you need it!
