Tip#1194: See The Positives In The Negatives, Part 2 – COVID-19 - Annihilation

This is Day 49 of the COVID-19 quarantine/social distancing/self-isolation here in Toronto, Canada.

More than ever I am feeling so blessed for the unexpected gifts that clinical depression and seasonal depression had given me. The silver lining is that over many years these mental health challenges led me to tools, methods and lifestyle changes that helped rewire my brain and rebuilt my life and work for the better. So to everyone who is struggling with the unexpected life changes of isolation and quarantine I sincerely hope you are open to recognizing the positives in the negatives of your situations.

For example, clutter greatly affects brain health so this is the perfect time to declutter your home. As mentioned in previous posts, I continue to declutter different areas of my home a little each day that include: clearing kitchen cupboards, freezer and sorting through piles of magazines and year worth of miscellaneous paper accumulation. I’ve also started a collection of clothes and other items to donate to thrift stores when they re-open again. And the cleaner my space at home gets the more free and lighter my mind and spirit feel!

Decluttering! Before and After

I am also learning to feed my thoughts with positive YouTube videos instead of the negative, heavy COVID-19 news updates I was getting obsessed with. I trained myself to just notice headlines and then focus on other feel-good images when I go on YouTube. That led to discovering so many fun and informative film and foodie related videos and hilarious clips that late night talk show hosts have been posting from home! Check them out…

And, of course, I continue to rediscover films that give me the perfect life lessons to inspire my positivity at this time. Some of them remind me that in order for something better to manifest, some destruction or crisis has to come first.

Annihilation (2018)

The psychological science fiction film, Annihilation, is about a group of five scientists who enter a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating plants and animals created by a crashed alien presence. This highly engaging, mind-trippy story is filled with stunning imagery and special effects and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.

This may be the most gorgeous looking "end of the world" movies! And these visually colourful moments highlight the film’s message that something exciting, positive and unexpected can come out of destruction. Of course it depends on how you view this film and I choose to see the positives in the negatives. This movie was designed to be ambiguous, to be thought provoking and generate discussion. It’s highly recommended that you don’t know anymore about the story and just watch it and let it take you away into another world for awhile!

It can be a shock when life hits you with a life changing surprise that is unavoidable. The best decision you can make in these situations is to choose to believe you will get through it and also to see the silver lining. This is an ideal time to declutter your old ways of thinking that no longer benefit you. This is the perfect time to rewire and rebuild a stronger, more resilient you!
