Tip#1009: Discover Your Life Purpose, Part 2 - Moana

I’ve recently been taking inventory of my creative output via this movie blog and Instagram photos of my Film Food Friends Project and they each have over 1,000 entries. Plus I recently reviewed the contents of my storage locker and was surprised to see hundreds of my original artworks and commissioned illustrations in there. Some of which no one has seen before!

Realizing this overwhelming output has made me re-access my purpose in life. As I’ve discovered this year, my creative output over the years has been due to using my talents for writing, art, music, photos and public speaking programs as creative coping methods for clinical depression. And so I’ve been organizing my content to get feedback as to what my higher purpose is and where I can best be of service to others.

I've realized I continue to be on a journey defining and re-defining who I am despite clinical depression as an aspect of this journey. I am grateful I no longer see my health and wellness challenges as a negative because I’ve embraced this as part of my life experiences and purpose! It excites me to know I have so many creations that can inspire others to persevere and stay strong along their own difficult paths.

And thankfully there are always movies with movie heroes that can inspire us all to help discover who we are and what we are meant to do in life!

Moana (2016)

The animated, fantasy, adventure, musical film, Moana, is about a Polynesian island girl named Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) who is mystically guided on an adventure to save her people with the help of the shape shifting demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). This action packed voyage is filled with gorgeous island scenery, humorous characters, catchy songs and strong cinematic role models. See: movie trailer

The character of Moana continues Disney’s tradition to create empowered female characters who demonstrate the qualities of courage, leadership, passion, perseverance and much more. She’s very much like a action superhero! Maui also demonstrates the strengths of finding themselves again after losing his way. This is a fantastic film for inspiring anyone at any age to find their purpose, their calling and who they really are!

Inspiring Themes:
• Self-Identity
• Life Path & Purpose
• Courage
• Passion
• Perseverance & Tenacity
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Family

Family films can be a wonderful tool and method for helping you or someone you care about learn more of your life’s purpose or calling. The movie heroes you resonate with can help you identify your path and what you feel most passionate about. This passion will be your fuel and drive to discover who you truly are and enjoy a meaningful life journey!

NOTE: As a bonus the short animated film that precedes Moana in the theatre is called Inner Workings and it is brilliant and hilarious!

Tip#1008: Remember the Magic of Cinema, Part 6 – Pete’s Dragon

I feel grateful that I’ve been able to remember my sense of wonder and magic from childhood! Every time I see delicious looking food I feel a surge of timeless delight or when I see friends or connect with like-minded people I sometimes feel like a kid happy to be connecting with someone in a meaningful way.

I recently attended my 2nd Learnography Open House called Learning through Time and it was a joy to see friends I met a year ago (see photos Tip#894). Since then I had the honor of being their opening speaker at their Brunchography event (see photos Tip#951) and love to share my selfies with them via my social media channels. I always felt this organization had a special magic about it and it definitely starts with the amazing work culture and people there.

Amy Coupal, CEO, Learnography, Emmanuel Lopez, Motivatorman, Tammy Cunningham, Communcations Coach

One of the highlights at the recent event (next to the delicious food!) was a presentation of a film Learnography produced for Kin Canada. It’s a fantastic 10 minute documentary called “Milk for Britain” celebrating their 75th Anniversary of Kin's Milk for Britain Campaign during World War II. This highly engaging animated feature was created for use in Canadian curriculum for grades 7-12. See: Milk For Britain Documentary

The documentary may have been created for kids but I found it so entertaining and educational that it definitely falls under the category of "edutainment"! What I learned was that Kin Canada had been responsible for saving many young lives during this war and initiated the Meals on Wheels program that still thrives today in Canada. Plus I learned how chocolate milk was created for these kids!

There was a sense of magic I felt in this documentary that made me want to feature it on my movie blog so that others can see it. Sometimes cinema is the best way to capture the feeling of what magic is like. Disney is an enduring film studio brimming with magic and yet I was not prepared for how special their remake of Pete’s Dragon would be!

Pete’s Dragon (2016)

The fantasy adventure film, Pete’s Dragon, is about an orphaned boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) who survives in the wilderness with his dragon friend Elliot and what happens when the outside world discovers them both. This entertaining movie also features wonderful performances by Bryce Dallas Howard, Oona Laurence, Robert Redford, Wes Bentley and Karl Urban. See: movie trailer

There is a special tone to this incredible family film that I’m not yet able to fully define. Magic is the closest word. I just highly recommend you see it as it can make you believe in the impossible or even in the existence of dragons. One of my favourite films growing up was 1979’s The Black Stallion and its meditative serenity flows through this movie. I found out later that director David Lowery did watch this film for artistic and visual inspiration. The Black Stallion is another magical family film I highly recommend (see Tip#367).

Inspiring Themes:
• Courage
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Belief & Faith
• Supportive Relationships
• Family

A sense of magic can be felt in any film that touches your heart and emotions. It can also be felt in the sight and taste of delicious foods that excite you. It can be felt in seeing a newborn baby, a child at play or when you have a joyful, timeless time with friends. There is a bit of magic waiting for you to acknowledge today. Be open to embracing when it touches your heart!

Tip#1007: Have a Good Cry at the Movies, Part 4 - Manchester by the Sea

About two weeks ago I saw a preview screening of Manchester by the Sea courtesy of The Spoke Club and Mongrel Media and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. It made me think about the unexpected loss of my dad at Christmas and the enduring love and support of family. At the same time the film reminded me of the healing power of laughter and crying.

I could identify with lead actor Casey Affleck who gave a stunning performance as a man dealing with overwhelming grief and emotional pain. He demonstrated what it is like to have trapped emotions. That’s why I believe movie heroes can be mirrors for each of us who have shared similar life experiences. And Affleck’s character became a unique cinematic role model because despite his inability to fully heal he shows amazing adaptability and resilience.

Manchester by the Sea (2016)

The drama film, Manchester by the Sea, is about Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) needing to become the sole guardian for his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges) while dealing with his own traumas and loss. This film mixes difficult, emotional moments with unexpected humor and features stellar performances by Affleck, Hedges and the rest of the cast that include a superb Michelle Williams as Lee’s ex-wife. See: movie trailer

The themes of loss are heavy and tearful in this film. And yet it was surprising to have unexpected scenes and characters injecting humor into the moments. There are also scenes dealing with mental illness with an amazing performance at a dining table by Gretchen Mol that’s both uncomfortable to watch yet riveting. That’s why this film stands out and is memorable because of the brilliant mix of emotions throughout the story.

Inspiring Themes:
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Indestructible Optimism
• Supportive Relationships
• Family
• Grieving
• Adaptability

Films can demonstrate many emotional moments that trigger our own thoughts, feelings and memories. Having a good laugh or cry at the movies is both cathartic and helpful to one’s spirit. Movies can also help you improve your life, career or relationships from the character's story. Let the movie heroes you resonate with help increase your inner strengths and resilience for whatever challenges you face today!

Tip#1006: Believe in Magic, Part 3 - Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

There are three areas of my daily life where the feeling of magic is always tangible. One is in delicious, heavenly foods that send my taste buds soaring, next is the wonder I feel in the cinema and third is the synchronicity of meeting like-minded people exactly when I really need them!

Recently there have been flourish of all three! I attended to a friend’s business open house and discovered it was celebrating the building’s other businesses in the medical and wellness fields. The homemade food was absolutely fantastic and so beautiful to look at!

I entered a door prize for one of the businesses and later won a one hour Rhythmical Massage Therapy with Elias Abdel-Ahad. It was one of the most powerful healing experiences I’ve ever had and I also bonded with Elias because he is also a big movie fan! More details in an upcoming blog on insights I received on blocked energies that related to blocked areas in my health, relationships and career.

Around the same time a client of mine recommended I connect with Sherry Bennett, Founder and Pain Management Director of Bayview Concierge. She then introduced me to Ingrid Taheri, Artistic & Executive Director of the annual High Notes Gala that helps increase awareness and resources for depression and mental illness through music and performances. We had an amazing lunch meeting The Bayview Golf & Country Club where I discovered the best sweet potato fries ever! They were so deliciously hot, crispy and fluffy inside! I definitely had a foodgasm!

Recently I found a Paleo Toronto diet/lifestyle group on Facebook and went to their Fall-themed Paleo Potluck hosted by Nattha Ploy and met some wonderful people who I learned more details about this healing diet. Not only did I finally find a local community important to improving my physical and mental health I also tasted some exquisitely delicious food! And this was the day right after I saw an opening day screening of a film that exemplified the magic of meeting like-minded people, eating delicious foods and the magic of cinema!

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (2016)

The fantasy film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, is about wizard and writer Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) who sets out to find his magical creatures that have escaped in 1920’s New York City. This five part movie series takes place in the Harry Potter universe and features wondrous creatures, amazing visual effects and action scenes in a beautifully recreated period piece! See: movie trailer

Despite the film’s dark tone and slow pace there are many memorable scenes like seeing Scamander’s collection of highly imaginative creatures. One of my favourite scenes shows wizard Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) magically make a strudel for Scamander, her sister Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) an aspiring baker. Queenie is so alluring in this scene and the creation of the strudel is mouth-watering to behold! The look of wonder and joy on Jacob’s face smelling and tasting this strudel was a delight to witness!

See: Strudel scene

At the core of this film are the relationships and how they synchronistically find each other and help one another unexpectedly. Seeing them achieve each of their goals is a reminder that this kind of magic happens in real life too. You just need to be open to chance encounters, events and opportunities that present themselves to you.

There are reminders of magic appearing every day in your life so stay open to the joyful feelings they will bring. It could be in the delicious foods you taste or the positive emotional energy you feel from new people you meet. And one place that is guaranteed to make you feel there is magic in the world is in the eternal joy of cinema!
