Tip#816: Be Inspired by Amazing True Stories, Part 5 – Unbroken

As of this writing I am still soaking up the bright, rejuvenating sunlight here in Las Vegas and my mental health feels excellent! No S.A.D. symptoms. I feel like this viral video I discovered of a little kid who just learned how to ride his bike and gives this fantastic, empowering speech! See: video

This little kid made me feel so good and I thought that no matter what else happens in his life his enthusiasm and perseverance with riding his bike has left a lasting mark for the world to be inspired by. This is how I felt about the movie hero from the biographical film Unbroken that riveted me when I first saw the amazing trailer.

Unbroken (2014)

The biographical war drama, Unbroken, is based on the non-fiction book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” and is about the incredible journey of USA Olympian and athlete Louis "Louie" Zamperini (Jack O'Connell). Zamperini’s resilience is astounding to watch as he survives in a raft for 47 days after his bomber was downed in WWII and then sent to a series of Japanese prisoner of war camps. See: movie trailer

Witnessing the pain and abuse Zamperini goes through felt like an endurance test. His will to live was tested by nature (lost at sea) and then by the Japanese specifically a deranged, violent commander named Mutsuhiro "Bird" Watanabe (Miyavi). There were definitely scenes of cruelty I felt were some of the most difficult I’ve ever had to watch.

Later I discovered online that much of the intense adversities seen in the film were true and inspired me more with Zamperini’s inner strength to survive. I highly recommend you read these links AFTER you see the film.

In the end, Zamperini left his mark as a new cinematic role model for resilience, perseverance and courage. His story can now inspire others not to give up no matter how hopeless life gets or how challenging your workplace can become. Be inspired by true stories whether they are a little kid learning to ride his bike or someone faced with impossible odds!
