Tip#513: The Power in Silence - Drive
I once wrote a blog post called The Positive Pause (see tip#153) and I knew that was what I was in now. I knew it was a necessary time of reflection and was learning to trust that life was unfolding the way it was meant to flow now. This was a gift of time and all I had to do was embrace it with no regrets or doubt. There was power in the silence.
The movie Drive is about a Hollywood stunt performer (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver. His character is alluring because he doesn't say much and yet there is a calm confidence about him. There are many dialogue scenes that are riveting because of his silence. Often when he is asked a question he doesn’t even answer.
There is a meditative quality of this film that captures the Driver's life as a loner. You can feel the power of the silence. So when he needs to take action as a driver or in defending himself, the screen physically erupts with incredible energy, intensity and violence. That contrast with the silence is what grips you. Despite the Driver's violent side there is much to learn from his dramatic pauses. His silent moments are not filled with doubt or hesitation but with confidence, alertness and sensitivity.
If you are going through a hibernation or positive pause embrace this as a gift of time. Feel confident that this is a necessary time for rest, reflection or re-energizing. There is so much power in silence and in quiet moments. Discover this today.
