Tip#1049: See Life as an Epic Adventure, Part 2 - The Recall - Transformers: The Last Knight

I'm with Andre Rosenbaum and Kelly St. John owners of Toronto landmarks Queen Mother Cafe and previously The Rivoli Cafe & Pool Hall.

Whenever I have a special day that was extremely fun and memorable I call it "epic"! It's the best way I can describe an outstanding experience that lasted a long time and felt like an adventure. I often relate this to wonderful experiences with food, social events and movies! It also helps ignite positive mental health and wellness in my day.

British Beverage Showcase

Recently I attended the British Beverage Showcase and it was definitely epic because it offered an overflowing sampling of spirits and non-alcoholic beverages from the UK. There were so many delicious choices of scotch whiskies, gin, coolers, mixers and sodas. Thankfully there were authentic British foods to balance out the drinks that included heavenly scones and fresh clotted cream and jam, piggies in the basket, mini toad in the holes and beef tenderloin in bread pudding. These were all foodgasmic delights thanks to Daniel et Daniel catering! I also bumped into friends I hadn't seen in years like Andre Rosenbaum and Kelly St. John owners of Toronto landmarks Queen Mother Restaurant and former owners of The Rivoli. It was truly an epic three hours!

I'm with Emma Herlihy and Laura O'Rourke of Boldworks who are promoting Seedlip Drinks, the world's first distilled non-alcoholic spirits!

The Recall (2017) Barco Escape Experience

Epic experiences also apply to special cinematic presentations like action hero legend Wesley Snipes's latest Sci Fi film, The Recall. It was filmed in the Barco Escape format of three movie screens and it was so unique and, at times, breathtaking. This must be seen in this format to see how groundbreaking this movie was! The added bonus was getting to meet Wesley Snipes, the director Mauro Borrelli and up & coming actress Hanna Rose May. And then having Mr. Snipes and cast sit right in front of my row during the screening made it an extra thrilling and epic evening!

I'm with action hero legend Wesley Snipes at the Barco Escape preview of The Recall!

Immediately after the British Beverage Showcase I was invited by my friend and business mentor Bill Sweetman of Name Ninja for the opening night screening of Transformers: The Last Knight. And since it was the first movie to be entirely filmed in IMAX 3D for brightly lit screens it was a stunning experience! The only word that came to mind was, or course, "epic"! Ironically it was in the IMAX theatre right across the Barco Escape cinema at the Scotiabank Theatres in Toronto.

Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)

The science fiction, action film, Transformers: The Last Knight, is the fifth installment of the movie series based on the Hasbro toy line. This chapter stars Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Laura Haddock and Isabela Moner all helping to save Earth from the once hero, Optimus Prime and the invading Transformers' home world, Cybertron. Lots of action scenes and stunning computer generated imagery for your eyes to gorge on. See: movie trailer

The Transformers movie series isn't for everyone. They've been criticized for being overly long, loud, bombastic in their explosions and their incoherent action scenes. And I agree with some of these films. However seeing this installment in the IMAX 3D experience was a thrill and I enjoyed this chapter. It was amazing to see the incredible detail of the Autobots and Decepticon characters on a huge screen in brightly lit 3D which makes a difference because normal 3D screen images are about 10% darker. Plus much of film took place in England so seeing this film right after the British Beverage Showcase made this day a memorable, epic adventure!

I hope this post inspires you to have your own epic adventures. It's about feeling positive emotional energy flowing in you that helps improve your mental health and wellness. There are always exciting foods, meals, social events and movies that will help your day feel epic. And what makes it all even more special is when you can share it with a friend, co-worker or someone willing to share in the fun. Have an epic day today!

Tip#1048: Activate The Power of Your Mind, Part 5 – Top 4 Movies on Reprogramming Your Life with Positive Lying

I have an app on my iPhone called Happy Note and every day I put in items I am grateful for and keep note of my daily healing practices for mental health & wellness. As of today I’m on day 112 of my self-love affirmations and self-hugging exercises thanks to Rhythmical Massage Therapist Elias Abdel Ahad (see tip#1029). And it is day 68 of doing one of the two guided meditation recordings by Dr. Joe Dispenza from his book You Are the Placebo (see tip#1041).

These two daily exercises are all connected to reprogramming my thoughts and feelings for feel-good positivity and indestructible optimism. They involve the following tools and methods that I blog and speak about in my motivational talks. Click on topics for related posts...

Affirmations (verbal & written)
Neural Linguistic Programming (NLP) & Future Pacing
Understanding the reticular activating system (RAS)
Creative Visualization/Mental Imagery
Prayer
Meditation
Pleasurable Activities (cognitive behavioral therapy CBT)

All these techniques have been powerful in helping me cope and transcend depression and anxiety symptoms and have become part of my lifestyle. The guided meditations are 45 to 60 minutes and were difficult at first but I have dedicated myself to doing them every day even if I fall asleep! The idea is to continuously focus on the positive reality I want rather than what is missing in my life and work at that moment. It’s about tapping into your imagination and consciously creating and manifesting the world you want!

Some may say this is lying to your self and yet it can also be seen as a positive lie with a strong sense of play! Here are some of my favourite movies that inspire this concept and are also full of entertaining, hilarious moments!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

This comedy film is about con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) a longtime resident of the French Riviera who trains his competitor, Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) for a joint scam in hustling Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly), a naive American heiress. There are so many memorable and funny scenes in this movie and all three leads are brilliant in their performances! It is inspiring to see how each immerses themselves in the roles they must play even when they are put on the spot to adapt convincingly.

Housesitter (1992)

This romantic comedy film is about con artist Gwen (Goldie Hawn) who moves into the empty house without the knowledge of Newton Davis (Steve Martin) who built it. The lies that compound upon each other told by Gwen and Newton are hilarious and also amazing to see how they help each other achieve their goals in career, love and family. What is inspiring to see is how they team up and learn to improvise effectively. This film has a similar tone as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels because it is the same director, Frank Oz (the voice of Yoda from Star Wars films).

The Invention of Lying (2009)

This romantic comedy film is set in an alternate reality world where no one has ever lied until down-on-his-luck writer Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) develops a skill for lying and begins manifesting what he wants and desires. This funny movie is also very thought provoking in helping you realize we tell lies to ourselves every day. So why not start telling ourselves positive lies help create a positive mindset? The film eventually demonstrates that lying for personal gain has its consequences and yet can also provide others with happiness when the intention is loving.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

This biographical crime film is inspired by the life of Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) who worked as a doctor, a lawyer and as a co-pilot for a major airline all before his 18th birthday. This Steven Spielberg movie is very entertaining and fascinating to watch Frank learn how to play each of these professions and be believable to others.

Other movies I recommend include the Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen movies that feature funny and memorable roles the characters create in order to achieve their goals and objectives.

The biggest take-away I recommend you recognize from all these movies is how each character fully embodies the lie or new reality they focus on. Recognize how they believe so much in their roles, both in mind and heart, in order to manifest the objectives and reality they want. The only difference is for you to focus on the goals and dreams you desire without the intention of hurting anyone.

Let all these films inspire you to role-play the most positive and successful version of yourself! Let these movie heroes mirror you inner strengths and potential for reprogramming the life and careers you dream of. And the movies you find entertaining will also help activate your positive emotional energy and that is invaluable fuel from your heart for playing your roles with zest and fun!

Tip#1047: The Benefits of Horror Movies – Get Out - Life

I was surprised to learn that watching scary movies actually releases feel-good brain chemicals like dopamine. For years I’ve been researching the positive benefits of increasing brain chemicals like dopamine (see tip#1032) for helping clinical depression so it was a big eye opener to know more about what happens to the mind and body when watching a horror film.

Margee Kerr, a sociologist specializing in fear (author of Scream: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear), says that scary films trigger our “fight or flight” mode releasing our “go hormones”: adrenaline, endorphins, serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. Our metabolism and heart rate increases that can, in the right circumstance, feel really good, because that physiological response has a lot in common with other “high arousal states,” like when we’re really excited, laughing, happy or full of joy and surprise.

Read more:
The Psychology of Scary Movies
Exactly What Happens To Your Body When You Watch Horror Movies
How horror films can be good for you - CNN.com

In addition, according to Thomas Straube’s 2009 study of neural reactions to scary movies, the brain tends to function similarly when we’re watching these situations to how it does when we’re actually experiencing them. This connects with powerful personal growth tools of mental imagery and creative visualization that Olympic champions utilize for their successes. This amazing tool is something I use everyday and teach in my motivational talks. See my other blog posts: Tip#831, Tip#980

Horror films are not my favourite genre and yet there are many I’ve really enjoyed over the years like Jaws, The Sixth Sense, Silence of the Lambs and the original Halloween and Carrie films. Here are two recent examples to trigger your dopamine flowing!

Get Out (2017)

The horror film, Get Out, is about Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and his mysterious visit to his girlfriend Rose’s (Allison Williams) parents country estate. This is a genuinely creepy and smart movie with riveting performances by the leads as well as Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, Betty Gabriel, Keith Stanfield, Stephen Root and more. The trailer shows way too much so I highly recommend you just see the film!

The director is Jordan Peele of the comedy duo Key & Peele and this directorial debut got rave reviews for its amazing balance of scary and a commentary on racial paranoia. Peele is a huge movie buff and this film also makes nods to other horror films.

Life (2017)

The science fiction horror film, Life, is about a group of astronauts aboard the International Space Station dealing with a microscopic alien life from Mars that begins to grow. This intense film features a unique alien and many gripping moments with a great diverse cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare and Olga Dihovichnaya. See: movie trailer

This movie is reminiscent of the original Alien film by Ridley Scott though it has its scary moments. It also features a great single continuous shot in its opening scene that lasts over five minutes. The alien that slowly grows is fascinating to watch and frightening in its resilience. Whatever you do please do not read anymore about this film so you don’t discover any spoilers. Just see it!

So if you enjoy roller coasters, haunted houses or horror movies that scare the pants off you then remember the benefits they provide that trigger positive brain chemicals to flow. These are chemicals that can lead to you feeling more alert, focused, confident and happier to deal with your daily life and work challenges. Feel this rush today!

Tip#1046: Increase Your Positive Emotional Energy, Part 4 - Wonder Woman

More than ever we need examples of heroes to inspire us while we face the challenges happening in our world today. These heroes, both male and females, can also come in the form of cinematic role models. For me, these movie heroes are one of many resources I use to keep me filled with positive emotional energy!

10th Annual Casa Loma Yard Sale

I had an epic day after seeing Wonder Woman on its opening day! It was a sunny and warm Saturday morning and I felt fantastic as I explored the 10th Annual Casa Loma Yard Sale here in Toronto. Afterwards I walked downtown soaking up the sun’s bright rays and came across a free BBQ at a church where I enjoyed meeting new people and delicious BBQ chicken, three kinds of potato salads, hamburgers and hotdogs!

Hatha Yoga Class

I later headed to my Hatha yoga class for another rejuvenating session for my body, mind and spirit. It also included a soothing head massage from the instructor! I was feeling so grateful and blissful afterwards and I know its thanks to all the work I’ve been doing maintaining and improving my mental health and wellness (see tip#1045).

Meeting Wesley Snipes

What helped build my positive emotional energy to this day were exciting moments in the week like meeting action hero legend Wesley Snipes and up and coming star Hannah Rose May at the preview screening of their film, The Recall (more on this on a future post).

Finding Six Dimes

I also found six dimes within three days which has never happened before! As I’ve written on this blog these are divine signs and reminders that my dad’s spirit is with me (see tip#966). Amazingly I found three on the day I saw Wonder Woman. These magical moments always excite me! Looking back, all of these recent events helped elevated my spirit, feel-good energy and confidence. This is how I also feel whenever I see an amazing, inspiring movie hero!

Wonder Woman (2017)

The superhero film, Wonder Woman, is about Diana (Gal Gadot), princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior and discovers World War I and her purpose for helping the world. This movie is filled with epic moments, exciting action scenes and memorable performances by Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen and Danny Huston. See: movie trailer

There is so much to love about this movie especially in having a new cinematic role model of a female superhero. Diana/Wonder Woman exemplifies a passionate, fiercely courageous woman who exudes confidence and excellent leadership qualities. The opening scenes of Diana as a child growing up is sure to inspire children of all ages with her strong, determined spirit. Gadot is truly radiant in her role and the director Patty Jenkins has paved the way for other female directors to shine!

The life lessons of what a hero is and the power of love also stand out as reasons I highly recommend this film as an enduring source of inspiration and motivation. You will also see many examples of resilience, perseverance and indestructible optimism.
