Tip#757: Fond Memories Feel Good - Godzilla

This week I was saddened to discover the second of two favourite bookstores was closing. The Chapters at the corner of John St. and Richmond St. West next to the Scotiabank Theatre is shutting its doors at the end of this month. This follows the closing of the World’s Biggest Bookstore two months ago.

For decades I loved going to these stores and will always have fond memories of times I spent there either shopping, browsing with friends or enjoying a quiet read of books and magazines on a rainy afternoon.

Other fond memories came up as a kid watching Sunday afternoon monster movies on TV when I went to see the new Godzilla film. Somehow parts of the movie triggered these warm memories because they kept what I liked of these cheesy 50’s films. I love how fond memories feel so good like a comforting, warm blanket!

Godzilla (2014)

The science fiction monster film, Godzilla, is a reboot of the Japanese films of the 50’s retelling Godzilla’s origins in today’s times. Starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe and Elizabeth Olsen in a cinematic experience that puts you right into this epic, exciting story of ancient monsters creating stunning destruction amongst our cities. With a slow build up to incredible scenes of the immensity of Godzilla and other creatures there was also a Spielbergian sense of awe and wonder. See: movie trailer

I loved how faithful this film was to the 50’s films giving me what I fondly remembered growing up as a kid. How the monster looked, moved and his famous roar brought back some nostalgic feelings of those lazy Sunday afternoons in front of the TV with my parents and siblings. At the same time this new movie was upgraded for today’s times as an adult. Maybe this reboot will happen with what I loved about my soon-to-be-gone favourite bookstores. That is a wonderful warm thought to think about!
