Patrick Bizindavyi recently shocked me when he said that the movie Hotel Rwanda was nothing to what really happened. Patrick was in his early 20's when the Rwandan genocide happened in 1994 and though he lived in Burundi he was surrounded by killings happening regularly for years. He lost family members, friends and classmates.
Patrick said it was hard to stay positive but he took key steps for staying strong and resilient. One key was not to listen to the horrifying daily news reports once and for all. He then focused on his passion which was playing basketball and coaching other teams. He also focused on having a better life and career. In 2002 Patrick came to Toronto and is now President of Goal Achievers Canada. Like the real-life hero in Hotel Rwanda, Patrick demonstrated outstanding personal leadership.
Author of Building Personal Leadership, Joe Farcht defines personal leadership as the ability and desire to crystallize your thinking and to establish a specific direction and destination for your own life. And author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says personal leadership is the process of keeping your vision and values before you and aligning your life to be congruent with them.
Hotel Rwanda 2004
The film Hotel Rwanda is base on true events of hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) saving the lives of over a thousand people during the Rwandan genocide. Faced with an overwhelming crisis, Paul chooses to use his skills as a businessman and his love of family to house refugees in his upper class hotel in Kigali Rwanda.
Despite facing horrors on a daily basis Paul maintains his focus and resilience to keep as many people alive. He kept his vision and values before him and persevered. Paul demonstrated leadership qualities that could inspire anyone to face their own challenges with courage, confidence and a strong will to move forward.
Be empowered by true stories like Paul and Patrick. Let their choices inspire you to take positive actions in the challenges of your own life, career or business. Make it a daily practice to hone your personal leadership skills and mindset. Always remember you have the power to overcome anything!
