This is Day 264 of the COVID-19 pandemic here in Toronto, Canada.
This week I’ve been thinking back to the group therapy I’d done since 2015 and feel incredibly blessed I faced my fears in solving clinical depression. The revelations and tools I learned helped me cope with my lonely, isolated times during this pandemic. And a big key to my wellness and mental health recovery was due to healing my wounded inner child.
With the help of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and the insights of fellow patients shared during group therapy I was able to dig deep within my subconscious and connect with my hurt inner child. Issues of childhood bullying in school scarred me in ways that were revealed for me to embrace. But first I had to release and express years of suppressed anger and pain.

One helpful tool I created for myself was a video compilation of eight scenes from movies and TV shows that always comforted me whenever I watched them. I made this video for myself and finally felt compelled to share with others in hopes that they feel comforted too. If this video was helpful to you please let me know.

The Christmas season is fast approaching and it will be the first time I will be alone and not with any family this year. So I’ve been creating a surplus of positive energy within me by doing things I love and by watching favourite Christmas films. The first ended by being my first viewing of a 40’s romcom film that happened to explore the wounded inner child at Christmas time.
Remember the Night (1940)
The romantic comedy drama film, Remember the Night, is about New York District Attorney, John Sargent (Fred MacMurray), who helps a shoplifter, Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck), to stay out of jail and enjoy the Christmas holidays with his family. This heartfelt movie is filled with memorable scenes and touching, funny performances by the whole cast that includes Beulah Bondi, Elizabeth Patterson and Sterling Holloway.

Despite the quirks of the plot, I was slowly charmed by the leads and then later my heart was moved by Lee’s emotional expressions as she confronts childhood traumas and fears and then experiences the love from John’s mother and the rest of his family at his Indiana home. The scene where she plays the piano with John's cousin Willie (Sterling Holloway) on Christmas Eve is so beautiful and heartwarming.
This is a movie I highly recommend for anyone feeling alone and lonely during the holidays. There are some sad moments but in the end there is the enduring strength of love and hope.
It takes a lot of courage to face the childhood origins of depression. And if you choose to go down this path remember you are not alone. Remember there is professional help available and loved ones that can support you if you open your heart to them. And remember there are films that can mirror your inner strengths to persevere and be resilient. Find a movie today to empower you!
