Tip#1104: Passion & Perseverance, Part 12 – The Untouchables

PASSION: A very powerful feeling about something such as love, hate, anger, or other emotion; A strong belief in something; Boundless enthusiasm

PERSEVERANCE: Steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement

No matter what mood I’m in, especially when dealing with clinical depression symptoms, I am still passionate about creating content for motivational movie tips and foodie photos to inspire others on my social media channels. It’s like a joyful built in inner drive method for enjoying life whenever I feel lost, stuck or alone!

I’ve been wanting to reach more people around the world who could benefit from my content and personal experiences but haven’t reached my goals yet. No matter what I still persevere despite whatever blocks a keep hitting. On a beautiful sunny Saturday recently I was feeling stuck on the next step in my motivational work and sat in silence in a coffee shop with my iPhone in hand.

I then felt the urge to review my photos to post on my Film Food Friends Project page on Instagram. I started writing the motivational text for the posts with related hashtag words so others could find the post and was fully aware how much I loved doing all this. I could feel my passion for what I was doing and realized I just have to keep persevering with what I love doing! See: My Instagram

The Untouchables (1987)

The drama film, The Untouchables, is about Eliot Ness (Costner) forming the Untouchables team to bring crime kingpin Al Capone (De Niro) to justice during Prohibition in 1930. With an outstanding music soundtrack, this highly stylish and beautifully photographed movie has many memorable, iconic scenes and engaging performances by De Niro, Costner, Sean Connery, Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia and Billy Drago. See: movie trailer

I remember seeing this film when it first came out in 1987 and immediately loved it. I was already a big fan of director Brian De Palma and loved every carefully choreographed scene especially the famous stairway shootout in Union Station. The music by Ennio Morricone was also so memorable for every scene kicking off with the cool opening titles!

When I recently watched the movie for the first time in decades I was struck by the passion of Eliot Ness and his team. I could recognize they each had a strong belief and boundless enthusiasm for their work. This was their passion that helped form strong leadership and teamwork and drove them to persevere whenever they got stuck or hit roadblocks. And though some don’t make it to the end they still accomplished their goal and helped make history.

Inspiring Themes:
• Courage
• Confidence
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Strategic Thinking

Memorable movies are the ones that affect us emotionally and can provide inspirational messages to persevere when facing problems in life and in our work. They can mirror the inner strengths we have inside when we feel lost, stuck or alone. Let these films remind us of our passion which is the fuel to fire up our perseverance and resilience when we need it most. Be inspired today to ignite that inner fire!

Tip#1103: Re-Energize in Nature, Part 3 - Open Range

Enjoying the Thornhill Woodlots!

I’ve recently enjoyed several mental health days walking in forests that were so incredibly rejuvenating and soothing! I could really sense the oxygen and life force the trees and plants were giving out. I could also feel my spirit soaking it up along with the lush greenery all around me. This is why getting into nature and sunlight is highly recommended for uplifting moods and mental health.

Soaking up the lush green of the Ellesmere Ravine!

Other fun benefits to these forest walks were sharing it with a friend and their pets. When I explored Ellesmere Ravine in Scarborough with my friend Michael his cat Scamp joined us! Going to the Thornhill Woodlots in the City of Vaughan with my pal Tammy and two Russian dogs named Lucy and Uma she was caring for. And my friend Jeff introduced me to his dog Luke’s favourite trails in High Park. It was simply blissful!

Loving the trails of High Park!

Here is a great article on why being in nature is one of the best medicines for mental health improvement: The Nurture of Nature: Natural Settings and Their Mental Health Benefits

The article also talks about the positive effects of just viewing nature. Studies support the idea that both physical healing and stress recovery are facilitated by viewing a natural scene which is what I always feel when I’m walking amongst trees or even seeing colourful flowers in neighborhood gardens. I’ll even feel good seeing lush green settings in a movie especially when they show that majestic beautiful of country scenes!

Open Range (2003)

The western drama film, Open Range, is about two open range cattlemen in 1882 Montana standing up for their rights against corrupt and violent lawmakers and an evil landowner. This movie features so many stunning lush landscapes, a riveting story and excellent performances by Robert Duvall as Boss Spearman, Annette Benning as Sue Harlow and Kevin Costner as Charley who also directed this film. See: movie trailer

The movie opens with wondrous shots of the pure beauty of timeless country (filmed in Stoney Indian Reserve in Alberta, Canada) which immediately took my breath away! Even though it was a cinematic representation of nature I still felt my spirit and moods lift with positive emotional energy.

I actually knew nothing about this film before watching it so I was pleasantly surprised at the romantic aspect weaved within the drama and gunfights. Plus it features one of Robert Duvall’s best performances. This really is a hidden gem of a film that I highly recommend seeing! The bonus was finding many motivational themes demonstrated by the movie heroes…

Inspiring Themes:
• Courage
• Confidence
• Passion
• Perseverance
• Resilience
• Leadership
• Supportive Relationships
• Honor & Integrity

Sometimes we can lose ourselves in our work or problems in life. And yet it is so important to remember to have a work/life balance that includes time in nature. Remember the feel-good feelings of breathing in the fresh air of a forest, a flower or stream. Remember the soothing sensations of gazing at the lush green of trees and blowing grass. And if you’re not able to get out in nature you can still feel energized by beautiful scenery seen in a movie. Get yourself re-energized today!

Tip#1102: Top 12 Movies For Foodies!

Two of my biggest passions in life have been the joy of movies and of food! These passions always excite my senses and lifts me up on the darkest of days. Just the sight of a beautiful and colourful meal thrills my eyes even before my mouth has tasted the delicious textures. The same happens whenever I see a scene in a film that features a lovingly photographed shot of tantalizing food or cooking.

I recently had a birthday gathering and gave a little gift of gratitude to friends for their love and support over the years. So I made my own improved recipe of extra delicious Rice Krispy squares with a graphic I designed for my top movie tips from different genres and motivational themes. Each person got a different graphic but the joy on each of their faces mirrored the joy we all shared whenever we eat meals or see movies together. Blissful!

Putting together a list of my top 12 favourite films about food and cooking has taken years but has been extra fun compared to assembling other movie lists. And though there are many movies about food this list is based on the number of times I’ve seen it and how much my mouth waters when I see foods on the screen! Tip#1101: Just Have Fun, Part 9 - Ant-Man and the Wasp

After a week of sweltering humid heat here in Toronto, a rainstorm came and the air cooled into a beautiful, clear, perfect Friday. It was also a difficult week both personally and work-related so the fresh air and bright blue skies prompted me to have fun, enjoy the day, take a long walk and soak up the sunshine and vitamin D!

Having fun is actually an important coping tool I learned from taking CBT, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, referred to as pleasurable activities. Making a list and engaging in enjoyable activities always helps ease and stop the ruminating of negative thoughts and feelings I experience with clinical depression. This is also connected to the law of attraction which I practice. Having fun builds positive emotional energy that can fuel  indestructible optimism, confidence and courage when facing of adversities in life.

All these practices lead to the increase of happy brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Movies help trigger these chemicals which is why films are my top favourite tools for my mental health and wellness. I am specifically grateful to the Marvel Cinematic Universe because, for many years, these films embody the essence of pure fun with the added bonus of providing massive amounts of inspiration and motivation!

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

The superhero action film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, is about Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne/Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and her father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) teaming up to rescue Pym’s wife Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) trapped in the Quantum Realm. This entertaining chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with exciting, inventive action scenes, hilarious characters and some emotional, heartfelt moments about love and family. See: movie trailer

With superpowers that can shrink people or cars and also make a person into a giant this movie is such a fun ride! The Wasp really kicks ass in this movie and also demonstrates a fearless attitude. She is also making history as the first female superhero to be in the title of a Marvel movie. The film also triggered my own childhood nostalgia with a pop song I loved as a kid by The Partridge Family and my love for Hot Wheels die-cast toy cars. I use to have a carrying case for my cars in the shape of a wheel and was thrilled to see it featured in the movie!

But it’s the pure fun that came from this movie that re-energized my spirit and got my happy brain chemicals flowing! I grew up liking Michelle Pfeiffer on screen and happy to see how radiant and gorgeous she still looked today. I also loved how they showed real-life microscopic creatures called Tardigrades when Pym entered the Quantum Realm. It’s a fascinating creature that demonstrates incredible resilience I featured in Tip#829.

Sometimes it's the little, joyful things in life that help increase our positive emotional energy during difficult times. Deciding to take a walk on a sunny, breezy day, revisit nostalgic memories or watching a favourite feel-good movie could be the perfect remedy to rejuvenate your spirit and fuel your indestructible optimism. Review your list of pleasurable activities and have some re-energizing fun today!
