Tip#1167: Remember Your Indestructible Optimism, Part 9 - Dolomite Is My Name

I was just leaving an important breakfast meeting at the Marche Mövenpick marketplace restaurant when a woman approached me and asked if I was Motivatorman. I was surprised and said yes and then told me that she reads my movie blogs. I felt so moved and emotional. That moment really made my day! I felt my indestructible optimism get an energy jolt to persevere with my career dreams of being the go-to-guy for my movies for motivation & inspiration resources!

That Monday morning meeting would be the start of five life-changing meetings that week that gave me key pieces to the next phase of my life and career. Some meetings specifically empowered my self-care strategies for my mental health challenges and some addressed the next phase branding strategies of my Motivatorman identity. And that woman approaching me confirmed that Motivatorman was still a strong, memorable brand!

On the other hand I still have so many aspects to my passions and services that part of my niching process was to organize all my diverse talents and services under three websites:
• Art, music and depression story: www.EmmanuelLopez.com
• Movie blog and motivational speaking: www.MoviesForMotivation.com
• Social media consulting: www.SocialMediaWingman.com

And while my website www.Motivatorman.com is undergoing an upgrade I was inspired to persevere after seeing an entertaining biographical film that was jam-packed with marketing tips, branding tips and lots of motivational moments!

Dolomite Is My Name (2019)

The biographical, comedy film, Dolomite Is My Name, is the rise-to-success story of performer Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy), who assumed the role of an iconic pimp named Dolemite during the 1970s. This curse-filled, raunchy film is filled with hilarious scenes and engaging performances by a memorable cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Wesley Snipes.

There is so much to love about this highly entertaining movie! Rudy is a fantastic real-life and cinematic role model for passion, perseverance, resilience and indestructible optimism for his goals in life. The sense of family, community and teamwork that he fostered to achieve his dreams and goals of creating his brand called Dolemite is also a constant throughout this story. Rudy had so many people telling him “no” to his goals for making a records and movies that it was truly inspiring to see him find a way to make them happen.

This film is also a must-see for all business owners, entrepreneurs and anyone who has a burning passion or dream. There are many tips on how to market your product in a small location and how it can grow nationwide through word of mouth and use of the media (radio stations). The film also shows you how to create a product with little to no cash and how to begin selling immediately.

I had no awareness about Rudy or his records or films and am so grateful Eddie Murphy followed his own passion and dream to make this movie. I watched it exactly when I needed to see it for inspiration and I hope it does for you too!

Whether you are a business owner or someone needing inspiration to persevere with seemingly impossible goals always remember that the right movie can inject you with positivity, hope and drive. Be inspired today to activate your indestructible optimism for success!

Tip#1166: Movies To Wake You Up, Part 2 - The Thirteenth Floor

Autumn is here once again which means I am feeling the depression symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It’s very frustrating because it’s like my body, mind and mood wants to go into hibernation mode like a bear going into a cave to sleep all winter. And if you’ve ever had jetlag the causes are similar to SAD which has to do with our internal clocks being disrupted. Read more: My SAD and depression experiences

It’s dark times like this that reminds me why Groundhog Day and other time loop films are my favourites because dealing with SAD happens every year around September and lasts around 6 months. And every year I wished it were possible to break out of this time loop feeling. I’ve also been frustrated with the political news in the USA and fantasized that maybe I’m in an alternate reality I just need to break free of. I think maybe I can do what many motivational gurus say and just reprogram my reality (see tip#1164).

That’s when I started thinking of films that could inspire me to wake myself up as if caught in a nightmare reality. I though about The Matrix, Inception, Dark City, Vanilla Sky and The Truman Show. I then did a search online for “waking up alternate reality movies” and came across the perfect film from the late 90’s I’d never seen before. And it blew my mind!

The Thirteenth Floor (1999)

The neo-noir science fiction crime thriller film, The Thirteenth Floor, is about a computer scientist Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko) in 1999 running a virtual reality simulation of 1937 and becomes the primary suspect when his colleague and mentor, Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl), is murdered. This genre twisting film is an exciting, atmospheric ride that also stars Gretchen Mol, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Dennis Haysbert.

It’s best you don’t know anymore about this mind-bending film and let it carry you away. Just know that it came out the same year as The Matrix and both feature thought provoking concepts of what is really reality and how can we break free of a life we feel trapped in and is wrong for us. The movie also features a touching romantic story between Douglas and the mysterious Jane (Gretchen Mol). In the end this film inspired me to persevere and figure out how to break free of a life I sometimes feel trapped in and continue researching ways I can reprogram my mind to manifest my dreams and goals.

If you feel trapped in a life you want to wake up from then get inspired by your favourite movies where the hero demonstrates shining resilience, perseverance and indestructible optimism to break free of their challenges. Things may appear hopeless in your situation but these films can at least free your mind for a few hours and return you into your reality re-energized and refreshed to keep moving forward!

Tip#1165: Do You Know Who You Are? Part 2 - The Saint 1997

I sometimes feel I have an identity crisis because I’ve developed so many creative talents and professions such as illustration, songwriting and motivational speaking. At networking events or even meeting strangers on the street they’d call me Motivatorman instead of Emmanuel because they follow me on social media. And then, depending on the event, I would introduce myself as Social Media Wingman. That’s why I always bring business cards for both Motivatorman services and Social Media Wingman services and don’t mention I also had a highly successful illustration business called Crackers World Communications to not confuse people. But online I’ve begun to embrace my real name and started to promote www.EmmanuelLopez.com as my primary website.

I recently attended an event all about taking care of your health in the winter, hosted by the Founder of Nutrition Balance held at The Village Health Clinic. There was an abundance of health and wellness information shared as well as delicious, healthy foods (all original Nutrition Balance recipes)! There was also a mirrored wall I called The Empowerment Wall with themes like “The Most Fabulous Thing About Me Is…”. I took a photo of it and didn’t even realize I was being reflected in the photo.

I’m with Ilona Gorelik, Nutritionist & CEO of Nutrition Balance
at her informative and delicious Nutrition Balance Community Event

Seeing myself in the reflection triggered something inside me and over the next few days found YouTube videos on mirror work as an empowerment tool by Eyvette Risher of My World of Metaphysics. And then I read an interview with Thought Leader, Mario Forleo in Success Magazine about her book, ”Everything is Figureoutable”. They both resonated deeply with me and I was inspired to look into my eyes in a mirror and take time to say some loving words and embrace my multi-talented and multifaceted self.

And, of course, all this connected with a favourite film from the late 90’s I recently watched that mirrored my current questions of who I really am!

The Saint (1997)

The action thriller and romance film, The Saint, is based on the popular spy series about international, high tech thief Simon Templar (Val Kilmer), who is contracted by Russian oil magnate Ivan Tretiak (Rade Serbedzija) to steal a cold fusion formula from scientist Dr. Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue). This highly entertaining movie features many quirky and hilarious disguises by Templar thanks to a great performance by Kilmer. Other engaging performances by Shue and Šerbedžija as well. The film also features a great score and soundtrack of trip-hop and synth-pop songs.

I always loved the many disguises Simon uses in this film and wished this had a sequel and film series! I also loved the romantic chemistry between him and Emma. And though I have seen this film many times since the late 90’s I currently resonated with Simon’s conflicted feelings about his true identity. He always used the names of Catholic saints as aliases and I saw this as his way of protecting himself from a childhood trauma he had experienced.

But meeting Emma, who intuitively saw into Simon’s heart and pain, helps him re-evaluate his values and priorities. Simon is visibly shaken, in one of my favourite scenes in a restaurant, when Emma puts a metaphorical mirror up in front of him to see his true self. That was the moment he begins his transformation into rescuing himself. Highly recommend seeing this film for these life lessons!

Sometimes it takes years to figure out who we truly are. And sometimes it just takes courage to look into a mirror, gaze into our eyes and say some loving words to the person looking back at us. Find some inspirational tools to help you find that courage and make peace with that person in the mirror. One of those tools could be an inspiring film that you’ve always loved that already mirrors your inner strengths so watch that one today!

Tip#1164: What You Focus On Expands, Part 2 - Somewhere In Time - Reticular Activating System (RAS)

It still blows my mind whenever a goal magically manifests right in front of me after I’ve focused on words related to this goal! I recently had a co-working day meeting with my friend and colleague Tammy Cunningham in Pape Village, Toronto that led to my recent experience. Part of the process was the positive feel-good feelings of the bright sunshine lit space and delicious foods of Café Serano and Tzaziki Restaurant!

We brainstormed ideas of how I could repackage my online content and movie blog of lived-experiences and solutions for depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and I identified keywords (mental health, wellness, depression, self care). I then made lots of enthusiastic notes of how to research this online to find more contacts for help and advice.

The very next day I was requested unexpectedly to have a meeting in a Toronto building I’d been to many times over the years. When I arrived I suddenly noticed on the lobby directory the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) was in the building. I got an amazing chill up my spine as if it magically appeared!

I felt that this CMHA listing suddenly showed up because of something I wrote about in Tip#831 for the 2015 film Focus starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. I wrote about the reticular activating system (RAS) and the technique called priming and how repetitive words and images can program this part of the brain to reveal and unearth these specific topics that have been right in front of you the whole time. RAS also connects to the power of affirmations, prayer, creative visualization and the law of attraction.

CMHA was always in this familiar building all along but the repetition of the mental health words the day before (and even weeks before) helped my brain focus and see the CMHA listing for the first time. This immediately made me think of a classic 80’s romantic film and watched it again for inspiration about the reticular activating system (RAS).

Somewhere In Time (1980)

The romantic science fiction drama film, Somewhere In Time, is about playwright Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) in 1972 traveling back in time to the year 1912 to find love with actress Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour) while Elise's jealous manager, William Fawcett Robinson (Christopher Plummer) attempts to keep them apart. This romantic classic features wonderful performances by the three leads and a sweeping memorable music soundtrack by John Barry.

I remember loving this film when it was first released and saw it again in stunning Bluray quality. I was astounded how deeply moving and entertaining it still is almost 30 years later! The music was still achingly beautiful and the chemistry between actors Reeve and Seymour was so real and heartfelt. And even though the time travel aspect is science fiction it was portrayed in a way that, I felt, believable. It’s this part that relates to the reticular activating system.

In the story Richard time travels back by priming his mind and focusing keenly on the day and year he wanted to go to. Through verbal and recorded repetition he programmed his mind for countless hours. But there had to be zero doubt in his mind so he also dressed in clothes of his targeted year and removed anything in his hotel room that reminded him of his present year. His mission is accomplished and the basics of his process is how RAS works. I highly recommend this film as an inspirational learning tool to applying methods for keen focus on goals, RAS and perseverance.

The term “what you focus on expands” is quoted by many motivational speakers such as Oprah Winfrey, Robin Sharma and T. Harv Eker. Be open and embrace this powerful and empowering concept and look around in your life and work now and see if you’ve manifested the thoughts you’ve been focused on whether they’ve been positive or negative. And then choose to prime your mind and focus on positive thoughts. And always remember there are inspiring movies to help accomplish your goals today!
