Tip#996: Discover Hidden Gem Movies, Part 2 - The Road to Wellville

Over the years my physical and mental health and wellness have become my priority so I am constantly researching online for helpful tips, articles, videos and studies. And along the way I sometimes discover films I hadn’t seen before that are perfect movie prescriptions for making me laugh while providing some uplifting wellness insights!

A recent discovery was The Road to Wellville that was a wonderful, kooky, thought-provoking story paralleling today’s overflowing resources and obsessive choices for improving health & wellness. There is also a lot of sexual content but it is done with much humour!

The Road to Wellville (1994)

The comedy drama film, The Road to Wellville, is inspired by true events about an unusual health facility in the early 20th century and the stories and relationships of the quirky clients that attend. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins) is the founder and William Lightbody (Matthew Broderick) attends with his wife Eleanor (Bridget Fonda) to provide hilarious performances along with stars John Cusack, Dana Carvey and Lara Flynn Boyle. This was such a strange and delightful discovery of a film! The period costumes, settings and customs of the early 1900’s took me to another world for awhile and I was tickled by the over-the-top performances especially by Hopkins and his buck teeth prosthetics. It also made me laugh with some of its health and wellness methods, philosophies and crazy contraptions. And yet there were clever insights throughout like these two quotes…

“With friends like you, who needs enemas?”

“Follow your heart. It’s the one organ that will surely let you down one day so don’t waste it while you’re living.”

Breathing exercises at Battle Creek Sanitarium (c. 1900)

The film also intrigued me to look at the history of the real Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas, and exercise. He is also best known for the invention of the breakfast cereal called corn flakes with his brother, Will Keith Kellogg which is still sold today. Read more: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg
