Tip#833: Resilience Resources, Part 13 – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

“I’m not going to give up and neither are you!”
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Laughter is always effective in breaking me out of the negative ruminating that goes through my mind whenever I feel stuck or depressed at work and in life. I’ve written many blog posts on the power of laughter and how comedy films and your favorite comedy performers can be excellent Resilience Resources for you when you experience an unexpected crisis or change.

Comedies make us laugh and laughter helps us feel good. When this happens positive neurochemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins are activated in our brains. Being in a positive state makes a significant impact on our motivation, productivity and wellbeing.

This blog is dedicated to providing movies that motivate but I am making an exception for a brilliantly hilarious comedy series that actually felt like an epic long TV movie when I binge-watched it on Netflix (I took breaks after every 3 episodes out of 13)! Not only did I laugh but each episode had a great motivational message told in a quirky, fun way.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)

The comedy TV series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is about a woman named Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) who escapes an underground bunker after 15 years and starts life over again in New York City. Kimmy is filled with childlike wonder much like Buddy the Elf in the film Elf and, through her hardships, has learned how to maintain her enthusiasm and indestructible optimism. Kimmy also has a talent for helping others face their adversities in hilarious yet effective ways! See: TV show trailer

“Life beats you up… you can either curl up in a ball and die… or you can stand up and say we’re different, we’re the strong ones and you can’t break us!”
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The show features a fantastic cast that include Titus Burgess and Carol Kane who play her roommate and landlord as well as Jane Krakowski who plays her wealthy employer. Tiny Fey is co-creator of this series and her kooky humour permeates every joyful moment! Kimmy herself is overflowing with positivity and enthusiasm and it is contagious. Her vibrant personality will definitely activate the positive neurochemicals in your head!

If you are feeling stuck or depressed in the workplace or in your life remember to give your mind a time-out and treat yourself to a comedy film or TV show. Have a good laugh! Make laughing part of your Resilience Resources. This will stop the ruminating in your brain and then return you feeling fresh and more effective to deal with your challenges!
