For years I’ve been encouraged by mentors to niche my motivational speaking services. And the direction I felt guided to follow is revealing more details of my mental health and depression. Since I wrote tip#830 about screenwriter Graham Moore and his heartfelt Oscar acceptance speech I’ve been deeply inspired by his honesty and uplifting message he sent the world. His courage and admission of his suicidal depression made me feel encouraged to persevere, stay positive AND to feel less alone with my personal struggles.
When I shared tip#830 on a LinkedIn group for Mental Health Networking I was contacted by Julie Ridge, President & Founder of the Frank Ridge Memorial Foundation, dedicated to assisting individuals impacted by mental health issues. We both shared a deep passion for movies and she encouraged me to not be “anonymous” anymore. So despite any fears I may have I am inspired by her support, by Graham Moore and others close to me to motivate people with my hidden personal stories.
Citizenfour (2014)
The documentary film, Citizenfour, is about Edward Snowden and his personal mission to share insider information on illegal wiretapping practices of the US National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence agencies. On one level this movie feels like a gripping thriller/horror film and on another it shocks with the information of covert mass surveillance on the general public. See: movie trailer
“Know that every border you cross, every purchase you make, every call you dial, every cell phone tower you pass, friend you keep, site you visit, subject line you type, is in the hands of a system whose reach is unlimited but whose safeguards are not.”
Citizenfour (2014)
In the end I was most inspired by Snowden’s courage, perseverance and resilience to face life-threatening situations to do what he felt was the right thing to do. At the expense of his career, family, friends and life Snowden had a mission to raise public awareness and he followed through with his goal. Part of the results were global discussions and this successful documentary that won an Oscar and is now being made into a major motion picture by filmmaker Oliver Stone.
So what is your mission? Where can you be of greatest service in your workplace or business? What career do you feel most passionate about? Have you identified your purpose in life? Whatever you choose I hope you stay positive and resilient and persevere no matter what as you accomplish your mission!
